  1. Well its finally come to the crunch and guess what - A website you have built has now been circulated (admittedly not by yourself directly but you advised that it was available knowing that people would look for it) and although I havent visited it myself (and wont be doing so), it appears to have advertisements on it which I assume you are making money from (either pay per view or pay per click)

If it were really just for the cause - You would not be placing advertisements on the site and attempting to make money out of forum members.

Also - I agree with Dave and you should not quote from other sites/people without first obtaining their permission IMHO if that is indeed what you have done - Its common courtesy irrespective of copyright laws and being such a major professional website designer I am surprised that you have the opinion you do.

I am glad you got your car problem resolved and wish you all the best in any future purchases but please do not drag other people into your battles without obtaining their permission, nor attempt to make money out of forum members......Ethics and decency.

  2. DHL won't be trying to pull a fast one, if they've sent you an invoice for this then they've had to pay the charges, so you'll have to pay the bill, sorry. Basically it's pot luck, sometimes you'll get stung for this, sometimes you won't, it depends on the item etc (e.g. whether customs spotted it as something that they can charge you for).

Just to clarify a few things here -

All of the large integrators (TNT, UPS, FedEx, DHL) perform pre-Customs clearance well in advance of the flight landing in the country. All the details are submitted by the carrier to HMrC and when the plane touches down (wheels down) that is when they receive the message back from Customs to state whether to hold or not for examination.

It is not customs who look and see if something is supposed to be charged Duties/Taxes but the carrier in the main part. Customs will only scroll the manifest and look for any suspicious items or anything else they may be interested in.

A carrier has a responsibility to ensure that all D&T's are collected and paid correctly - and will be fined if they regularly allow shipments through without payment.

All D&T's are calculated based upon the value and description as provided on the commercial invoice. The description is as important as the value - as different duty rates are payable on different commodities - and due to the vast number of commodity codes - an item can be classed as different things by different operators.

Eg - If you order a Wheel Bearing made from Steel from the US - dependent upon what description is supplied on the CI then that could alter the amount of Duty you pay.

It could be listed as "Automotive Bearing" or "Automotive Wheel Bearing" or "Generic Car Part" or "Bearing made primarily of Steel" or "Steel Machine Part" etc etc

Each of these could (although I havent checked in this example) attract different rates - so its dependent on what the employee who is doing the pre-clearance classifies it as. It could be "zero rated" (ie 0%) under one category but 20% using another.

None of them would sting you for HMrC charges that they hadnt had to pay themsleves - They may however charge a "admin" or handling fee. This is to cover the cost of the operator doing the clearance work and submitting to customs.

VAT is, in the main part, chargable on everything imported into the EU - and is charged on the "CI Value + Duty" at the rate currently in use

Finally - Mis-declaring an items value is a criminal offence and therefore not advisable - It is exactly the same as walking through the Nothing to Declare channel when reterning from outside the EU - knowing you are over your limit.

  3. Whilst Rock Auto continue to ship with the "Shipper" paying for all D&T's - then as the consignee you have nothing to worry about - You pay what you pay direct to the seller - Whatever the D&T's are.

Its when companies send items and list the consignee is responsible for D&T's that you need to worry. You would then get a call from the courier company on arrival into the country stating what D&T's were payable before they released the shipment.

  4. Seller cannot pay the VAT and should not charge unless they have a fiscal presence in the UK/Europe - Shipping company can pay the VAT/Duty on customers behalf and bill them for it on their account though for example.

In addition to VAT, Duty should also have been charged on the shipment

Ken - If you give me the AWB # I can check out for you -

PS - Before 6pm commitment is correct for your postcode.

  5. After having a chat with a few of my customers, they have sent me to one of their tuners to get some more ideas about what to do about the lack of power in my car, this sitee is a fantastic resourse but an indipendant opinion is always necessary when spending thousands of £'s. This garage have turboed and charged several IS200's, but after a chat about whats possible I think this is the plan.......

They have an empty 3L Supra block and ALL the bits and pieces including ECU, uncut Loom, Turbo, etc just needs building (pistons and crank, head etc). So it will be a re-built unit also.

They are willing to fit the engine into my IS for just less than the cost of the pro-lex S/C conversion but only if the standard IS gearbox is used. Will this work, or is the IS gearbox made of toffee like the engine internals? They think the box will fit (or can be made to fit) the engine but I would just like some confirmation before stripping a perfectly good (but high mile) engine apart. If it is a non starter then Pro-Lex have a SC customer.

    Any advice???

I wont' say who is doing the work until it is a reality as that is only fair to the company.

Just out of intrest....how much do you think the pro-lex S/C conversion will cost you

Well I got the price from Prolex 2 weeks ago, so knock £300 off and thats the price for the conversion!!

Knock £300 off what  and i price off prolex for what  you lost me here mate :duh: Pm if you dont wish to show in public.

Possibly referring to the change in VAT rate? So can work out from that.....
