  1. hi rik. dont know about the radio sucurity code set how do i tell?. yes when you put key in the ignition the steering column adjusts. cheers kev. When you switch the ignition on, if a code has been set, it should display "SEC" on the display briefly. If "SEC" doesn't get displayed, no code has been set and you are fine to disconnect the battery. OK, just wanted to make sure that the switch in the barrel that is used to detect the key is inserted appears to be working.
  2. Cheers Steve. So difficult to tell. I have a pair sat in the garage that I bought when I had the mk1. I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a pair for the mk2 just in case. I'll just have to sell the mk1 items. Same with the track rod ends and tie bars I've got. As far as I can tell, the front a rear drop links I've got are the same for the mk1 and 2's, so at least thats something.
  3. What does it do when you press the accelerator? Anything at all?
  4. Has your radio got a security code set? If it hasn't been set, then you are fine to disconnect the battery without knowing any codes. When you put the key in the ignition, does the steering column adjust to the last set position?
  5. I wouldn't expect it to be any easier. If you already have all the gear, then might be worth a go, but probably not worth buying to try it.
  6. Does depend on the extent of the damage. Last wheel I asked about (for my old E36 BMW), they could not repair it, so only way to know is to let them see it. They should strip all the old paint, fill and smooth out any damage/chips on the wheel, true the wheel (if it is not too bad), primer, paint and laquer. Should look good as new, but it does depend on the place doing the work to some extent. i.e. the wheels on my mk1 Sport had been refurbed by the previous owner, but the paint in the corners between the spokes was a little dimply, so not as perfect as I would've liked. They did still look good though.
  7. I'm not aware of any ECU issues ont he mk1. To the OP, is it a late mk2 or early mk3 you are looking at?
  8. I agree with Keith, if you don't mean the bumper, then the black strip can be glued or screwed back if need be.
  9. I should have an electronic copy somewhere, I'll try and track it down tomorrow.
  10. I think everyone has covered the boot really. Your ignition key should turn the little barrel by the boot and petrol cap release levers. When turned, the barrel should pop out slightly, and the lever will work again. What key do you start the car with? It doesn't fit the boot lock on the boot lid itself or the lever lock? I may have a cd cartridge knocking about in the garage. I'll have a look tomorrow. For the alloy centre caps, try sending a personal message to user ACLex, I bought 4 from him recently for my spare set of alloys, I'm sure he will have some left.
  11. The little metal insert you are talking about is to help remove airlocks. As long as the thermostat is the right way round, it doesn't matter which way the insert is (as long as it is at the top)
  12. There is also a fuse link in each cigarette lighter. If it has blown, you can dismantle and bypass the fuse link.
  13. Anyone know if the bottom ball joints for the mk1 and mk2 GS300's are the same? Cheers
  14. I've been using the halfords double concentrate stuff for years. At 100% screenwash concetration, it is good down to -23°C, at 60% it is -18°C and at 50% it is -17°C. In the summer I have it diluted down much further, less than 10% normally.
  15. Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open or been removed. That should cure both problems, but you may also need to flush out the heater matrix.
  16. I would agree that your thermostat appears to be stuck open. As far as your water leak is concerned, I would check your rad cap, maybe the seal is/has gone and the stop leak has just helped clog that seal up.
  17. Sounds like a plan. The double DIN I have bought to put in my MK2 has 5.1 surround. Just waiting for the last cable to arrive so I can start installing. Although I will ditch the factory sub in favour of my Vibe active sub still. I'll also ditch the factory changer and fit the ipod interface unit and Parrot hands free relay unit in the space it frees up in the glovebox.
  18. If you can find a double din unit that has the correct protocal to talk to the changer you might be able to. Not tried it myself, as I prefer my ipod (or other mp3 player) for music, so never used the changer anyways. My sub fitted quite nicely down that side of the boot once the changer had gone
  19. Yup, for sure. I've put the mk1 wheels on my Mk2 and they look great on that too. The fat back wheels look ace and are a must. Sorry for derailing your topic Ashman :shutit:
  20. I'm kinda split on the looks. When side by side, I think my Mk2 Sport had the edge on a full frontal. From the back end, the mk1 wins by a mile. a cut and shut between the two would create a fantastic looking car.
  21. Does the red light on the dash (the car symbol with doors open) go off when all the doors are shut? Does it light up with each door being opened - i.e. to confirm all of the door open/closed switches are ok. Does the central locking work from the passenger door key? You mentioned in your PM that the car locked itself when you started it the other day and it was a good job you had the spare key. Do you mean the car was running (key in ignition)? I'm inclined to think the drivers door lock switch or door open switch may have problems. I think by default if you unlock the car but don't open any doors, it will lock itself again after 30 seconds. If the car doesn't realise the drivers door has opened, it may well lock itself again. Hence the checks above to confirm the door open light is working for all doors. Also, if it the ecu can't figure out what is locked or unlocked, maybe it won't allow it to lock for safety reasons. Has your stereo got a code set?
  22. I think most of the number plate resellers offer a valuation service, might be worth trying a couple.
  23. I wouldn't have thought it would be economical to do it to be honest, plus which you would probably be hard pushed to find a phone that would plug into it these days. You are better off getting a bluetooth hands free kit (Parrot or similar) and fitting that. That is what I did, although I did ditch the headunit, CD changer, factory amp and sub at the same time.
