  1. The camera has arrived, I am hoping to have a go at fitting it at the weekend, weather permitting.
  2. If the battery is definately ok and the cables to the starter, then I suspect you are getting the first symptoms of the starter solenoid contacts sticking. There is a link in my signature "overhaul starter solenoid" which shows how to fix it if you don't want to buy a whole starter.
  3. I guess the answer to that is "No"
  4. Don't know mate. I upload to my own server space anyway. Have you PM'ed Steve to see if he has any ideas?
  5. One of the items have bought for the GS recently has resulted in an invoice from Fedex for import duty. My question is, what am I legally responsible for? On the invoice, there is £5 Import VAT (or something similar for the description), and £10 admin fee (which I assume is a Fedex admin fee). Do I have to pay that fee? What would Fedex do if I didn't? I don't mind paying the duty, but I think that the admin fee seems like a bit of a p%ss take.
  6. These are some pictures Don sent to me to upload here for reference.
  7. Unforunately, being an option wheel doesn't guarantee anything. On my mk1 GS, the Sport wheels had tapered seats, the OEM bolts were flat. When I tried to get a couple of nuts from Lexus, they could only get flat seats (actually shown on the parts diagram with the sport wheels - but clearly the wrong nuts), so no idea where they originally got them from when they fitted the wheels in the showroom. Fingers crossed yours are the same though.
  8. Cheers for that, I knew there must be a quick way to get to it. Never noticed before as I never watch any topics.
  9. Open the link below Click here If you are running firefox, it doesn't always work in all versions. If the menu fails to show, run it in IE.
  10. Scrub that last reply. It does do what I said above but to see a list of "watched" topics, go to your profile, click "Edit my profile", then click "Forums" tab, and then click "manage watched topics". I couldn't seem to find a quick way of getting there, but I'm sure there must be.
  11. I don't think there is a way as far as I know. I think a "watched" topic just emails you each day if there have been any replies to it in that day.
  12. At least that confirms it is a mk1. Nice result on the fuel line :) The wipers are just a tapered spline fit, so plenty of wobbling should free it up.
  13. Not an easy job, with plenty of potential hidden problems. When I had to have mine done, the handbrake cable and abs sensor ended up having to be done, at about £800 altogether in the end. No idea as far as a DIY job goes, presses are needed ( hydraulic most likely) to press the bearings in/out.
  14. Just the problem bearing needs to be done. Although I am surprised if they felt a "wobble", that it didnt fail already. The rear discs are similar to the fronts but the handbrake drum is part of the rear disc. With luck, the disc will just come off. If not, you will need to back off then self adjuster. This is done through the hole in the disc centre when the hole is in the 6 o'clock position. A screwdriver through the hole is used the rotate the adjuster.
  15. There are lots of scanners that work on "Lexus". It doesn't seem to be a Lexus or can bus thing, it is an early mk2 GS (and LS's it would seem) and the fact that the compliance wasn't mandatory, so they didnt make it so. If we were in america, there would be even more Lexus that they would work on as their compliance kicked in 5 years earlier. Don, if the guy who came out to you had a scanner that worked, why don't you just call him and ask what he used? I get the feeling it will be an expensive one, probably not economical for an occasional DIY code check, but either way it will give a lead to go on.
  16. It is the silver box on the far left of your pic I believe.
  17. Sorry, I'm not saying they can't be read, as Lexus read them, but when it comes to "cheap" DIY scanners, there seems to be a problem. From 2001, it was the law that they had to be fully compliant in Europe, so a 2001 mk2 will work on the the scanners you have tried, it is the pre 2001 mk2's that are the problem. Call the chap who came out and ask for the make and model of his scanner ;)
  18. I'm sure the first mk2's were '98 on an 'R' plate, and the last mk1's were '97 on an 'R'. gmacalex, just to make sure, does yours look like the blue or red one in my sig?
  19. There is definitely a difference with early mk2's. I.e. There are scanners that work on the mk2, but not early ones, I think pre-2000 possibly. Not sure on the LS.
  20. Unlucky. Hopefully a short piece of high pressure fuel line will sort it out
  21. Be careful Mike, that ad does specifically say it works on US cars from 96, and European and Asian cars from 2001. I suspect Lexus/Toyota just didn't adopt the full OBDII specification on the earlier cars, as by law they didn't have to, and that's why they don't work. Would be cool to find one that does work though.
  22. Wouldnt say that the fuel smell is a common issue, the fuel tank is actually in the boot (behind the panel at the back of the boot) which is why the boot looks smaller than you would expect. Drop the lining down and check it out. Could be coming from any point in the fuel system in the boot. Water by the jack could be boot lid seal, electric aerial or sunroof drain pipe. Getting behind the liner is easy enough down that side to check. The paint code should be on the vin plate under the bonnet. There will be a 3 digit code (mine is 8M6) on there. From what I remember, there should be a chasis code, a transmission code, and the paint code. No idea with the bonnet pull, but I wouldn't expect it to be a tricky job. Clean up and lick of paint on the rad brackets and strut tops is what I'd do. As long as the strut towers are ok, then it shouldn't be anything to worry about. As far as other things go, standard stuff to check out really, suspension bushes, ball joints etc. Very common issue is sticking calipers and slide pins on the brakes, so worth a look and regrease the slide pins. Check when last cambelt was done. It is a non-interference engine on these cars (mk1), so no damage will occur if the cam belt does break, it would just be inconvenient.
  23. Welcome to LOC. Good choice of Lex B)
