Normally, if the alternator packs up during normal driving you start losing system gradually. i.e. the charge light comes on, then the check engine lights a short while later, then the abs warning light shortly after, etc. Caused as the charge left in the battery depletes, and the voltage levels for each system are no longer sufficient. This is accelerated if it is at night and your lights run things down quicker.
With regard to the charge light, is it showing before starting the car and then goes out? (just in case the bulb is blown)
