  1. If you have to ask then don't buy.

    Personally, I always like the originals. Anything else makes the car look as though you've had an accident and had to replace them. But that's just me.

  2. I added an extra coat of lacquer on BRAND NEW replacements a year ago. The old ones only corroded on the recessed parts where the brake dust tended to collect.

    No problems so far and still looks as new but I follow the detailing guides (somewhere on this site).

    Why not indeed! You're not a second class citizen and you only live once. Make sure it's got all the accessories such as a complete toolkit.

    1. I've been in a few Jags and they're no different from ordinary cars in terms of noise. Tootling around in an LS400: completely silent. On the motorway: you only hear a little wind noise. I've had a test drive of an SC430 and the tyre noise is louder (thinking about it, a change of tyre could have made a difference). Best of all, after a 6 hour journey you get out feeling completely relaxed.

    2. Exactly what it says on the tin. Petrol is probably the lowest cost of owning a car depreciation is probably the highest cost so don't worry about it.

    3. 'A' service at a Toyota garage: £190.20. 'B' service at a Lexus garage: £418.37. Watch out for the cost of the synthetic oil. I was charged £65.40 +VAT which is apparently about right for 60 litres of Castrol SLX. For such a complicated bit of machinery, I wouldn't take it to a non-Lexus garage (again).

  4. the long answers is.... at slow speed the calliper floats in and out as the warped disc goes around  and the pads follow it, but as the speed picks up, the mass of the calliper can't float in and out so easily, thus allowing the pads to push the pistons further into the calliper. this continues until the pads are barely kissing the high spots of the disc as it whizzes past.  thats why when discs are warped, the brake pedal travels further to bring the brakes on.

    Find it hard to believe that calipers do any floating about. I would have thought they're fixed hard and fast to the suspension.

    Doubt even more that the pads follow it around. I take it you mean float in and out too.

    As the speed picks up, I doubt the calipers will be affected as they're stationary relative to the car, the only thing that changes in the brakes will be the speed of the disc going round.

    Sorry none of this makes sense still.

  5. I've recently bought a '97 LS400, which I guess started life as a demonstrator, since it was owned by a Lexus dealer for the first ten months. Whilst the handbook only mentions 225/60-16, mine has 245/50-17, fitted to what are presumably optional Lexus rims, since they've got the Lexus 'L' badge in the centre. Full set, including spare. Fortunately the car had four new Pirelli PZero fitted before I bought it - a set of those is over 700 quid!

    The LS400 had an optional £2424 dynamic handling pack which offered 8Jx17 alloys with 245/50ZR17 Pirelli P-Zeros. There was a slight firming and lowering in suspension too.

    After ten years of knowing the bone-idle worthless :tsktsk: I decided to call it a day. He's one of the "work to live, not live to work" brigade in other words go to work, keep your head down and do :tsktsk: -all all day.

    I did my best to pull him up. He did his best to pull me down. Sad little :tsktsk: .

  7. If they are like the ones fitted to the SC430 then there are not worth it - their ride quality is very poor.

    I had a test drive of an SC430 the ride seemed OK but the tyre noise was louder than my LS400. I suppose a change of tyre might have fixed that.

    The other problem is there's no spare with the SC430. How are you supposed to rotate tyres without an axle stand?

  8. As a "No", I don't consider other people's opinions to be expert opinions unless they ARE experts and even then with a pinch of salt.

    I bought my lexus 'cos I knew even Toyotas have very quiet engines, plus the German sister magazine to 'Autocar' said Lexus follow quality procedures to the letter, plus Toyota build a corolla in the same time as it took BMW to put right the bugs in their cars showing they spend a vast amount of effort in the design for manufacturing process. Just imagine how much time they spend on the actual design of the car's functionality. Plus Autocar REALLY bad mouthed the LS400 so I bought one.

  9. :tsktsk: The headlights (particulary the passenger side) are on permanent dazzle mode - great for attracting attention to your lovely car but not for the bloke you are following down the motorway.

    :tsktsk: Front alloys have started to show corrosion on the interior edges (see other thread on this topic), they'll need replacing during my first service.

    :tsktsk: If you have HID headlights there should be a sharp cut off (much sharper than ordinary headlamps). Otherwise there may be an adjustment or loading problem.

    :tsktsk: I bought my car a year old. I replaced the alloys on warranty and have looked after them as recommended on the auto-detailing link on one of the pages on this site. The paint work of the alloys needs as much attention as the bodywork if not more. Mine are still like new after 2 years.

    That's illegal. You can't do that. Besides I always use VirtualDub; usefull for re-combining two half movies as well as squeezing them onto CD with a little editing.

  11. 1) A wax is a coating to protect the surface. A polish is a fine abrasive. My car's three years old and the paint work is good enough not to need a polish.

    2) A flexi-blade is good for getting rid of large amounts of water. But there's no alternative to a chamois which does it properly. After you've chamois'ed the car should be squeaky clean but not quite as glossy as after waxing. A good time to check if you need clay. If you wash your car in sunlight and the water dries out, it'll leave water marks which only scratch the car. Try and wait for a cloudy, dry day. The chamois should be damp but not soaking. Use the rough side.

    3) Always wash the alloys before the car itself.

  12. 1) A man running after your car waving a fuel pump in his hand just before the car stops,

    4) the fuel tank never empties,

    5) the fuel tank empties whilst sitting on the driveway,

    etc. etc.

    there are a million differenct symptoms DEPENDING ON WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE FUEL PUMP.

    Your question is backwards. It's like going to the doctor and saying what's the symptoms of a bad liver. He doesn't know whether you mean sclerosis of the liver or cancer of the liver etc. etc.

    So he gives you the symptoms of sclerosis of the liver and you say: "Hmmm! No that's not what I've got. What other Liver diseases do you know of"

    Ten years later after he's gone through every single liver complaint he can think of. You suddenly die of a heart attack.

    You may as well ask "What are some of the symptoms of a bad car?"
