  1. I am completely useless when it comes to mechanics but I have purchased a CD-ROM workshop manual so will try and check at the weekend! Many thanks for the advice. I suspect the throttle housing is probably dirty!!! OR it could be the EMU - sounds expensive! I am running my LS400 (1996) like a classic (weekends only) and am reluctant to take it to a Lexus dealer due to cost! Having said that it is a superb car - the best I have driven in 30 years of motoring!

Certainly sounds like the throttle body needs cleaning. I had a similar problem with my mk 3 at 196k, it would stall when i stopped after a run but would then re start and be fine until i next did 8-10 miles at a steady speed when it would stall again the next time i stopped. I found that whilst the tick over was low it didn't actually cut out if the air con was on as the tick over speed was a bit higher.

In my case the throttle body was not only filthy but worn so i had to have it replaced, almost £600 at my local dealer. However the difference was fantastic, much smoother and fuel consumption improved too.

Many thanks - this seems to be favourite at the moment - will possibly try to clean it myself - when the workshop manual arrives!!!

Hope it does not need replacing!!!! £600!!! Was that at a Lexus dealer? Do you know how much the part (throttle body) cost? How much of the £600 was labour?

This was done earlier this year.

Lexus Wolverhampton. Part no 22210-50023 throttle body-£407.68

    Part no 22271-50010 Gasket-------£ 2.17

    Labour--------------------------------£135.00

    All plus vat.

    TOTAL--------------------------------£640.20

As I'd bought the car from them they agreed to pay 50% which was pretty fair as the car had done 195, 078 miles and I'd had it with no guarantee 4 months earlier.

They said it was rare to have to replace as usually cleaning would do the job, but mine was worn on the "spindle".

Have you checked the tutorial on lexls.com.? Thats for the previous model but I believe the Mk 3 is the same.

  3. Hello, this might be a bit late for you but--- 2 weeks ago I sold my Mk 3 to neighbour (that's confidence for you), last week his wife tried to run over the recycling bin damaging the lower bits on the bumper. Swapped them both in 2 hours this morning. Actually he did it while I stood and supervised, tried to look as if I knew what to do, made tea etc.

First you need to undo the wheel arch liner at the front (or completely if you like). With this done you have access to the fitting, There are 5 nuts to undo on each side on the top, the bolts should remain in place. These are a bit awkward to get at but he did them with a 1/4 drive socket wrench. On this car they all came off with no trouble but you may need a squirt of WD40. The only fiddly bit was lining up the holes through the fitting, metal support bar and the bumper when putting back together, swearing at it helped.

Remember to put the corner pieces over the middle section.

    Hope this may help.

P.S the recycling bin was smashed.

  4. When my dad first got his MKIV the backlight on the drivers side climate had gone aswell. Lexus tried to source an electronics company to take it apart to fix it as apprently there not a normal bulb that can be easily replaced, in the end no one would touch it so they replaced the whole center console unit under warranty, about £2800 apparently, all looked nice and new after it was done though, my point is, it's not easy to do, so take it back but if they won't fix it, just use the climate in normal mode rather than dual in the dark and read it off the passengers side instead.

Thanks for the information James, as you say I don't really need the light , would just look better. I don't think the dealer will be too keen on £2,800 when I only paid £3,500 for the car.

Thanks to Chris who made me feel really old as I realised I can remember petrol at 30p a gallon, -less than £2 for a 2CV tankfull. Oh and sorry I didn't get a Maroon car.

I should have made it clear that it was the price of the bulb from a lexus dealer which was a shock as Phillips hid bulbs are on e bay at £70 (or less)per pair.

  5. Hi Folks,

Picked up my 9 year old "new" car yesterday and so far it feels great. It's a 98 done 123K full Lexus history and in April along with the service had new Cam belt, Fan Belt and Plugs replaced. It came with 6 months tax and 12 month warranty(insurance backed one but better than nothing).

It looks like a bulb has gone on the dash as I can't see the drivers temp setting in the dark, is this much of a job or should I be taking it back to the dealer?

In the service history I have a bill from Feb this year when the owner had a headlight bulb replaced. this was for a total of £190!!!!! Guess this means I won't be using it at night in case another one goes. Seriously though, £140 plus vat for a bulb?

  6. When I did my Mk 3, the mast didn't come all the way out until I had someone press and hold both the waveband, cd and tape buttons (4 in all), and then turn key to accs position. Stand ready to grab the mast with a rag cos its filthy. Push in the plastic drive with teeth towards back of car until you feel resistance and then turn key to off. My new mast didn't go fully in but retighten the nut anyway. Next time it goes up it should fully retract when you turn off. I had my mast off e-bay uk, brilliant service, arrived in 24 hours and was about £27.

  7. thats a poss maybe time for a service oil change and plugs

Hi, Had the oil and filter change done last tuesday, done 500 miles since and can barely hear the engine now. Thanks for the advice, perhaps a bit of muck causing temporary blockage somewhere?

  8. Is the oil level all OK?

Hi, yes oil level is fine. Went to start it again today and for about 10 seconds it sounded as if the main bearings had gone. Then suddenly everything back to normal!!! Neighbour suggested a sticking valve?

  9. Help. I went out this morning and car ran perfectly, got back home and engine sounded normal- almost silent. Just gone to car and it started instantly BUT is missing badly, engine now has what i would describe as a light knocking noise a bit like I once had on a Cortina when the camshaft was worn, (showing my age now), The engine will rev although I haven't tried it over 2k and the knock gets faster but no louder. Any ideas on what can have gone wrong whilst parked for 6 hours????? Car is 95 LS400 and has 196K on the clock.

  10. Welcome to the LOC mate,

If the fares are higher definately be worth it :D

Where abouts in the west midlands are you from?

Dont forget to get some pics up mate

Hi, Live in Stourbridge, near the Merry Hill shopping centre.

I'll read the instrutions on how to put up photos. Afraid to me, computers and rocket science are the same thing.

  11. Probably a bit late but I have just fitted MR2 Mk1 on my 95 ls400. Took 40 minutes start to finish. The clear lights went straight on BUT you need the MR2 bulb holders as the lugs are in dfferent positions. I got round it by enlarging the slots on the lights with a small file.

I also have clear front indicators and rears with a clear indicator and Rear fog stripe. can confirm that you have to file out the holes for a rear fog light but didn't take long. I use red LEDs. Front and rear lights from Lextacy.com in LA and MR2 repeaters from Stylyze off E.bay (£15.49 with postage) and included orange bulbs.

Which year mr2 indicators as they have three listed on their shop.

As of this morning E. bay item number 150122409406. As i said you will have to enlarge the slots in the fitting to match the lugs on the bulb holder if you don't change that too. I used a small 1/2 round file.

  13. Hi folks, recently purchased my first Lexus- LS400 Mk111 and today I saw R REG WITH A TAXI PLATE (in Dudley Port, West Midlands). Just wondered if the fares were higher than the normal Toyota Carina?
