Advice Needed - sell IS200 and buy Merc ?

Seems about right. I got £1200 trade in for my 53 plate two years back but that was tempered with a sweet finance deal that offset the trade in. If you can forget the trade in value and look at the cost to change it might make you feel slightly better . -
Are you sure its failed ? ..the only reason I ask is that I had the same issue diagnosed with my old IS200 and it transpired it was a build up of rust on the disc rubbing against the back plate..had the same on a few cars over the years, it gives that horrible sound as if the bearing has gone, usually on cornering / braking. That aside I'd ring up a garage for a labour quote - my guess is a couple of hours work at the most which might make that Lexus quote half decent if you are paying £179 for the part itself.

Odd..my windows clear on my IS200t (which is a bonus)...but didn't on my 62 plate 135i. ...2 door thing I presumed.

Enough reason to make the dealership take this seriously. As for returning it, how long has the OP owned it? Is it within the 30 day period to exchange then exchange it but best of luck on simply returning it and expecting your money back. I would also ask to look at the full history, Lexus in my experience can be quite cavalier with the truth. Hopefully its a blocked drainage channel or a badly fitted boot and not had a rear end shunt.

Lovely cars, I had an IS200 SE for 7 years and still miss it. My issues included the clutch judder due to the dual mass flywheel "issue" that wasn't an issue according to Lexus, seemingly normal but had it done under warranty that rectified it. I also had an annoying front clunk / knock that they couldn't sort and was common back in the day. Cam belt change obviously but never recall hearing of one snapping irrespective, other than that just wear and tear. I still see these cars in main dealership service bays and many a salesman will tell you they simply couldn't get people out of them and into the IS250 as so damned reliable. Hence should be plenty with decent history.

It really compliments the car. One of the reasons I went for the IS200t over the IS300h was the back end look and I think you've nailed it.. -

I use OEM until warranty etc expires then its Euro car parts.... (btw whats with the petty name calling ? Has this place changed or is this the norm now..this place used to be a bastion of civility) -
Can you find something in between, that may be the sweet spot . Personally I would pay more for lower mileage, however with your low annual mileage you can afford to go higher in the mileage stakes.. I wouldn't entertain a 140K car unless I had a decent local friendly garage, a bit of DIY and a slush fund to pay for things that extra mileage might impact on, ie shocks / suspension etc, as we know some of this stuff with Lexus doesn't come cheap. The lump under the bonnet will probably outlive the rest of the car so no worries there I guess.

Ouch ! They aren't called stealers for nothing. Amazing how a simple call back or return to a main dealer can result in such misery. Keep your pride and joy but get the issues they identified looked at by an Independent garage. Tyres,exhaust, pads and discs are obvious wear and tear but a complete exhaust..really? Has it failed its MOT... My mums 2005 Toyota is still on the original but when they told us 5 years ago it needed a water pump, gear box and complete exhaust they lost our custom. None have actually required replacing although the MOT advisory last month said the exhaust was leaking slightly... Where is the oil leak , thats really unusual...is it slight seepage from a gasket or is it dripping on your drive? You car is 9 years old , discs and pads through an Independent should be no more than £200 - if they need doing that is. The tyre quote sounds reasonable but you can see if they are worn or not and ring around for quotes. Its probably the time that you either move away from lexus for servicing / repairs or do as you are suggesting and keep in the fold and buy a used (presume nearly new) . If you want to keep your current car look elsewhere for repairs / quotes - if it actually needs them that is.

I rang three dealers and my local dealer matched the lowest price. I'm due two major services and one minor (car had 1st service on purchase) and this is costing £34 a month over 29 months plus an initial payment. When you see what they actually do in the full services (very comprehensive) I think its probably worth it. The future cost is fixed at the quote they give you and will only rise if VAT goes up. -

My mileage is less than 4000 a year -if that. What are the advantages of stop start in the fuel stakes against battery / wear on the ignition system. Sat there at lights with headlights or running lights / heater or air con/ stereo going after a mile from home clearly isnt sensible - or is it What do people do ? I'm forever reaching for the off switch.

Interesting post, My IS200t is my first auto and after a month I'm in no doubt at all at the mullering the front pads and discs are getting over any manual car I've owned. I guess your car is much heavier. I tend to feather the brakes as have always been pad/ disc aware but this is a whole new ball game. Do I simply use N more often at lights to deter that forward motion and the impact on the front brakes ?

Likewise. I left because BMW produce fantastic petrol engines with performance to match at a price well below RC-F money. However I came back, the IS200t ticks most boxes for me now but if the IS350 was around I would never have left. I always recall the mass of IS200's and the distinct rarity of the IS300 back in the day that kept prices of the latter to a premium. I have absolutely no idea what Lexus are playing at - . There is no middle ground nowadays.

Back in the day yes but to risk the wrath of HMIC Inspections nowadays - it would take a brave Police Force to get involved in that. What we do know is that Labour created a massive crime wave by asking Police forces to crime everything in the early 2000's, then changed the crime recording methods to look as if it was falling, the Tories got in and binned the staff and decided volume crime wasn't a priority. The strings nowadays are pulled from above.

I guess my point was that Forces often fail to differentiate between theft of / TWOC / theft from a vehicle or vehicle Interference. They tend to lump it all under the term 'Vehicle Crime' in these stats which can be very misleading. My local force is typical of this hence It's extremely difficult to differentiate between the theft of high value vehicles as in the OP's case or someone taking some wheel trims. Dumbing down crime (vehicle crime in particular) is all part of the usual Government plot to mess with the stats when it suits them. When it was necessary to make austerity cuts it was also necessary to sweep volume crime under the carpet and remove it as a priority. When they need some good news again acquisitive crime will become a priority, figures will drop and we can all clap our hands at what a marvellous job the Govt of the day are doing.

Most modern cars are nicked by people snaffling keys from the kitchen via a side door or simply screwing the house. Nowadays vehicle crime isn't a priority so getting accurate figures on makes and numbers from any individual Police force is virtually impossible. The figures do exist however and trust me in the big scheme of things its not enough to lose sleep over.

My son has ordered the Tesla model 3. I'm surprised Lexus aren't going down this route, it seems the natural step.

I struggled with the same issue so went with BMW as Lexus just don't have that mid market performance .It's one extreme to another. So went and got a 135i coupe, 3 litre turbo, 300bhp blah blah and it scratched an itch for a while (until a month ago) . I now have the IS200t (so same engine as the RC200t) and its underwhelming in comparison (raw performance )but it suits me fine as I'm less likely to kill myself or accrue points I'm not sure the 4 cylinder turbo would offer a significant change in performance for you from the IS300 h so its looks the RCF ... (Its a shame they cant drop the IS350 lump from the US into it - that would be a compromise)

Its a gorgeous looking car and that's probably about the only similarity between both models....they are worlds apart I would guess. Having seen both in the flesh the rear end of the RCF sets it apart from anything else on the road . ..I thought it was jaw dropping but I may have had showroom goggle vision. It depends what you want in a coupe, having just come from an extremely rapid one if I was looking at something similar in the performance stakes to the RC200T I would look at the GT86 or the BRZ and save myself £10 grand....
