Almost 34,000 Consumers' Association members reported on the reliability of their new cars. Some 7% of these vehicles broke down within two years of leaving the factory, up from 6% in last year's survey.
Land Rover fared particularly badly, with 19% of the Discovery 4X4s included in the survey experiencing a breakdown. The Land Rover Freelander performed only slightly better with its 86% reliability record.
However, an unprecedented five car models (made by Saab, Nissan, Mazda and Lexus) were reported to have had no mechanical problems.
