  1. I’ve not seen this before but assume it sits on top of the battery positive terminal ? Option 3 is out as I believe the link is aluminium, although there is an option 4.......attach jump leads to Father-in-Law. 😀 I hope this is the correct part as highlighted?
  2. There is no relay for the wipers. The wiper speed is controlled by the resistor pack integrated into the stalk assembly, on the high setting this is completely bypassed explaining why you still have high speed but no others. I would be looking for a good secondhand stalk.
  3. I don’t know when the “Cycling Proficiency Test” ended but I before I was allowed to cycle to school you had to train, take and pass this test. From 11 years old I had already grasped basic road safety and the rules of the road which then gave me an advantage when it came to the motor cycle and car test. At the time the now defunct News of the World gave their “Knight of the Road” award if you passed the cycle test over a certain percentage, I got 99% after a disputed one point deduction for a slight play in a wheel bearing. It’s still Steve, no need to call me Sir. 😀
  4. I’m unsure if it is still the same but I received a copy of the Highway Code Book with my provisional driving licence and haven’t seen once since ( the original having been long lost). No doubt the present offering will be a digital version so I would assume this comes with free updates to reflect changes such as those currently being proposed. I also thought that giving pedestrians right of way at junctions was already a requirement and generally accepted these days as they tend not to look anyway before crossing leaving the vehicle driver with the responsibility of both thinking for them and looking for them to avoid that bonnet slide situation and possible loss of their Apple ear plugs during the impact. I’m now waiting for further regulations on the Highway Covid Rules the main one being if you are involved in an altercation with another driver you must fit your face mask and show your vaccination QR code before winding the window down and shouting your normal choice of expletives at them. 😀
  5. I found an expensive looking phone left on a chair at security in Lanzarote airport a few weeks ago and handed it in to one of the security guys so hopefully got reunited with its owner. Could you not claim off your travel insurance seeing as it was lost on a holiday?
  6. There are apparently certain disadvantages in using this product but hopefully living in a town Phil you should be OK.
  7. Similar situation with my LS430 being wide and long, I try and park in a double length bay but still have to take a good metre of the one behind me. Thinking no one would get another car in the remaining bay behind me I came out to find a Smart car there! After struggling somewhat to open my boot I was so annoyed I threw the Smart car in there and drove off with it. 😀
  8. That’s a lot of missing fluid, driving it for so long with such a low level must have resulted in major damage and as you mention it is surprising it didn’t completely seize. Personally given the complexity of the transmission I would be looking at either a known good secondhand replacement or find a specialist on Aisin transmissions and have it rebuilt. As David mentions sticking shift and lock up solenoids could be one cause but so could brake bands and clutches not to mention internal bearings all of which have been starved of lubrication. I would also be asking where all the missing fluid went if there are no obvious leaks.
  9. You had a wheel bearing replaced in the hub which also contains a wheel (ABS) sensor and pick up ring and “since then” you have various faults associated with these components basically says to me they messed up. You have already done the right thing by taking the car back to them “double check everything” and clean the ABS sensor. Was this just a visual check, was the sensor measured for the correctly specified resistance readings and what were the stored OBD fault codes? What did the live data suggest? My money would be on an open circuit ABS sensor or broken pick up (reluctor) ring damaged during the bearing replacement which a diagnostic test should confirm and given it was all OK before I would be looking at the garage for redress at their expense.
  10. I see your point. In the past car manufactures have done various thing like fitting smaller engines to avoid higher taxes in some countries and reducing emissions if taxes are based on this system. The problem seems to be that car prices have risen due to material, production and now shipping costs but the threshold for the luxury tax has not. The same can be said for inheritance tax and more recently personal tax allowances which have been frozen.
  11. You could arrange an AA or RAC inspection before purchase which costs around £200.00 but is very comprehensive although it may be a little late to organise this now. If you have a mechanic friend who knows about these cars take them with you or just take someone with you, 2 pairs of eyes are better than one. You also have, as Malc mentioned, consumer rights regarding the condition and description of the car. https://www.theaa.com/car-buying/legal-rights Obviously check every switch and button works as it should, check the MOT history and the new one for any advisories. Check the tyres...are they all the same make or at least the same on each axle, is there good and even tread depth on all the tyres. Check the alloy wheels as they have corrosion issues in general. Check the bodywork for paint colour matching, do all the panels line up correctly with matching gaps on both sides. Ask to see the HPI report which should show up any previous issues with the car like accident damage or outstanding finance, there have been recent cases where bailiffs have turned up to recover a newly purchased car as it has finance still outstanding. If all the above checks out and you do buy the car get it booked in at Lexus Derby or Nottingham immediately for a full health check, this is generally a free but comprehensive check and will highlight any existing and potential problems. It will also provide evidence if there are any serious defects and you return the car to the dealer. If you have the car serviced at Lexus you should also qualify for the warranty which includes the traction battery so enquire about this also.
  12. I’m old enough to remember “Purchase Tax” This was introduced as a “Luxury Tax” on purchases such as a new washing machine or a colour TV which at the time were considered luxury items as you still had the choice of hand washing your clothes or renting your black and white TV set. Eventually this Tax evolved into VAT but now applied to almost everything purchased, children’s clothes and most food items being the exceptions. So now you end up paying car tax, VAT and a luxury tax. Even the Covid travel test kits, which are a legal requirement, are subjected to 20% VAT, I can assure you there is nothing luxurious about sticking a swab down your throat then up your nostrils.
  13. Initially confused by the acronym “ICE” which I had always understood to mean “In Car Entertainment” and given that it was also mentioned that the problem on several occasions occurred after the radio had been left on. I did however deduce that the same now relates to Internal Combustion Engine. I think aviation is the ultimate environment for acronyms, anyone know the following without getting google involved ...PAPI, ATIS, ECAM and TOGA ( the last example not being a Roman garment) 😀 Answers on post 12,005.
  14. Hi Phil and welcome to the LOC. It sounds like you have already discovered from previous posting the battery appears to be the weak point on the hybrids, some members have taken to using smart chargers if power is available or as you mention solar chargers. I totally agree that this should not become an issue but with the reduced physical size of the battery and it’s capacity it is unfortunately. With all electric vehicles now being pushed and the power network already near full capacity I can see the breakdown services getting rather busy especially if someone decided it would be fun to disconnect your car from the charging cable on the way back from the pub. Or even worse someone trips over your charging cable with our ever present blame and claim culture.
  15. The only real check is to remove the stat and then lower it into a clear Pyrex jug of freshly boiled water then see if it opens. The rubber seals tend to perish so a replacement would be wise after 15 years.
  16. Hi Phil and welcome to the LOC. I driven past the JLR engine plant many times when working in and around Birmingham, still hoping to get to visit the Toyota engine plant in Japan 😀
  17. I replaced mine ( completely unworn) for the wood version. I asked Paul Frost if he had any and after sending a couple of pictures of the trim colour he sent me a perfectly matched one in as new condition for free 😀 Unfortunately no picture at the moment as out of the UK. Do you ever use the sequential shift on yours John? I tried mine when I first purchased the car but that 6 speed is so smooth you can’t hear or feel the gear changes so I just leave it in D. If you do need that extra performance it’s just a flick of a switch into sports mode.
  18. I take it you have had the battery removed or disconnected during this work? Is the security light going out when you insert the key and turn to ignition or does it continue to flash! If it continues to flash https://youtu.be/_bVDAYgbyPI
  19. That’s the same guy who bought a Mercedes S class for a similar sum of money. He must have sold that one if now left with just the Mercedes tank. What makes his videos more interesting and different is he first takes the car to a dealer, racks up a large estimate then proceeds to sort it himself for a fraction of the quoted cost.
  20. Hi Robert and welcome to the LOC. You really need to check the Live Data from the O2 sensor to confirm if this is the cause but it is generally the main suspect with this code, you don’t mention how many miles/KMs the car has done or service history? If you do replace the sensor go for a genuine or branded replacement ( normally Denso).
  21. Hi Mark, First picture to confirm correct part, second for models it is used on, some are Toyota so should be able to obtain locally.
