  1. I still repair electronic equipment down to component level, it's a dying trade in this throw away society of today. Manufacturers don't help, I had a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) the other day where both the component and print side had been encased in epoxy resin just to prevent it from being repaired. For sure Lexus would have replaced the complete alternator, probably not a brand new unit but a reconditioned item, your old one in turn would have ended up on someone elses car after going through the same process.
  2. It could be coming further south soon, maybe somewhere like Dudley :) Not far from me but 4 LS400s would result in severe domestic issues!
  3. I think one is a DAB radio system and the other is a type of aeriel, as to the answer of the question sorry I don't know.
  4. There are several servo motors under the dash which control airflow through the various vents and perform cold/hot air mixing. When the car ignition is 1st turned on it is normal to hear the servo flaps moving to their preset positions. Have you checked to confirm the air comes out of the correctly selected vents ( windscreen demist, face level, footwell) and the temperature range is available. Removing the pollen filter on certain Lexus models without the climate control set into a certain mode can cause damage to the flaps.
  5. As you have covered the front wheels it may be worth have the rear tyre balance checked, did you ensure the hub flange to disc mating surfaces were properly cleaned before fitting the new discs as this can cause problems with balance if not done.
  6. Opinions vary, personally if I'm stopped for a short time e.g. at traffic lights I tend to leave it in drive then you're ready to pull off on green. If you were stuck in a long jam with nothing moving then I would select park. Which ever way you chose to drive the transmissions will be happy. Strangely enough there is no mention of the use of the neutral position in my LS400 handbook.
  7. Hello and welcome to the LOC. Never heard of a brake booster/servo failing on the LS400, what was the problem with it? If you suspect the brakes were binding have you checked the calipers as they have a tendency to seize, if the brakes overheat it may affect the ABS sensors and trigger a fault causing the warning lights to illuminate. Pulling the codes will help with diagnosis, you could also take the car for a run and then carefully feel the wheels for excess heat indicating binding brakes.
  8. If it turns out to be an expensive fix you have consumer rights from buying from a dealer.
  9. About 2 weeks after I did my starter I remember having the exact same symptoms with the click click, turned out I hadn't quite tightened one of the battery terminals fully. Never had a problem since. One good thing about the Celsior is there is no EGR system to worry about and having to remove with that fiddly pipe at the rear of the engine.
  10. Blimey,I'll drive past the Jaguar Land Rover engine plant a little quicker in future just in case one of their lumps explodes all over the M54 :)
  11. If you have a decent set of standard garage tools, socket set, ring spanners, torque wrench etc then you should be fine. The only time you may need dealer SSTs is when doing timing belts or engine rebuilds.
  12. If you mean the windscreen pillars I would imagine most go down the driver's side as the fuse box is on the same side for mirror, sunroof etc wiring to it.
  13. I don't think there is a cabin AC filter on the 89 LS400 ( you must have one of the very few 89 models). I find the best thing to use is an AC aerosol usually found in car parts stores. Start the engine put the AC on maximum cold, open all the air vents, locate the aerosol on the rear transmission tunnel and latch the button down, close all the doors and windows and wait until all the contents have gone, open all the doors to let out the fumes. Something like this
  14. If you're spending a significant amount of money on any car it pays to have an RAC/AA inspection done, they are very thourough. Don't know if that includes an HPI check but again ask to see it.
  15. Sorry can't help you with the garage recommendation but is your avatar picture of you or the last hit and miss mechanic trying to fit oversize wheels to your IS300 :)
  16. Hello and welcome to the LOC. If you have the original master key which also opens the glovebox and boot then you should be able to program additional slave/valet keys and have the key blade cut to match the master. There are several DIY reprogramming methods on the internet.
  17. Most aftermarket wheels use the cone type wheel nuts , easy to decide which by taking a look at the wheels themselves,if the holes are conical or flat as on OEM Lexus wheels.
  18. Hello and welcome to the LOC. The IS220d engine is somewhat "fragile" in standard form due to known issues with cylinder head gasket failures leading to replacement engines being fitted under warranty in some cases, boosting the power if even possible is not perhaps recommended.
  19. If your OK with soldering I would suggest getting hold of some liquid flux ( RS components or CPC ) before you attempt the resoldering as the resistors are surface mounted not through wire. If your not confident I can do these repairs so feel free to PM me. You should also find that none of the other illuminated centre console buttons light up with this problem.
  20. If I remember correctly the diesel engine is the same/very close to the Toyota Avensis unit so this may open up additional avenues regarding choices.
  21. Hello and welcome to the LOC. I had a GS300 1999 which I bought as a loaner when my LS400 was being repaired and the one thing that bothered me was the brake issue known on these, I sold it to the bodyshop owner who did the repairs and 3 years later he's still driving it around.
