I always use OEM filters and a quality branded 5W-30 fully sythetic engine oil. If you have no cambelt history get it done ASAP, if the belt breaks or one of the pulleys fail the engine will be wrecked, also recommended to replace the water pump at the same time. IIRC the cambelt change is 100,000 miles/10 years for this engine so it is now overdue if no previous renewal records. My local garage will do the job for £200.00 + VAT labour if I buy the parts so expect to pay around £500.00 in total.

Dobre den. Welcome to the LOC. I had a GS300 for a short while but then returned to the LS400, unusual for tranmissions to fail in Lexus cars the Aisin units are pretty bulletproof. Not sure about the jerking but would be checking for mouse chewed wiring in the engine bay, door lock solenoids probably stuck in the front doors,ball joints easy and cheap to replace.

Does the security light on the dash go out when the key is inserted or continue to flash?

Hello and welcome to the LOC. We have quite a few members in Scotland but well spread out, it's bigger than people think with a 300 mile drive from Glasgow to Wick as I found out a couple of years ago :)

Got a feeling this one is on another post, hasn't done much mileage over the last 4 years but seems to have less mileage stated than when MOTd in September. A lot of advisories one year which seem to have have been dropped subsequently, was this an over zealous tester or have all the jobs been seen to? Other question is why is it still for sale after 6 months?

Lexus sell the rubber blade refills, pretty easy to fit ( if you have a good relationship with your dealer they may even fit them for you) Part numbers are 85214-44140 RH and 85214-48010 LH. -
IIRC from previous similar posts you have the right to have the car repaired at a garage of your choice, so if you want Lexus to do the repair work insist it is done there,this would also remove any doubt over future claims on your extended warranty. Obviously approach your insurer's with your concerns and let them know you would feel uncomfortable if a non Lexus dealer did the repairs,main thing is be nice in doing so.

A 1991 LS400 with only 30,000 miles on it ? Would be nice to see some pictures and a little more history of your timewarp LS. Favourite is the TB clean, there is a little hole in the butterfly and if this gets clogged it can cause low idle despite the IACV rerouting the engine air supply at idle.

I've said this before but hey. My car is nearly 22 years old coming up to 90,000 miles and still on the original discs all round with no perceivable lip around the edges so discs do last. On the 1st MOT I had done at a small business with around 5-6 outlets the advisories were both front brake hoses perished and front discs scored. 9 MOTs later and this has never been mentioned again with the original parts still fitted. This same company also offered me an "engine flush" service which is "highly recommended for high mileage engines" I pointed out that the car may be old but with a mere 40,000 odd miles and fresh fully sythetic oil the engine was not old,high mileage or indeed needed their flush. Needless to say that was the first and last time the car went there. Regarding Lexus Edinburgh I wonder if they actually inspected the discs and just went on the previous report no doubt displayed on a computer screen.

True, OBDII will not throw a code for low or non existent fuel pressure, a quick test for the fuel pump is to open the engine diagnostic socket and place a jumper wire between +B and FP connections of the socket and then see if the car starts. Also on the passenger side fuel rail there is a pressure regulator connected to it at the rear, it looks like a little top hat with a pip in the top, if you do the above test this little pip should pop up if full fuel pressure is present. On the 1996 you will have to remove the engine cover to do this. The fuel filter as mentioned can is often overlooked as a service item and can become completely clogged. Regarding the replacement pump reliability, on ebay it does say "lifetime warranty" and for the cost compared with Lexus prices surely worth a try. Worse thing is a failed CPS would have thrown a code so why 2 supposedly professional outfits wrongly diagnosed a part costing £200.00 is beyond belief. My advice is to also find another garage who are experts instead of guessperts preferably a little further north :) If you can drive it 150 miles north I'll even take a look for you.

Hello and welcome to the LOC. I think earlier models like my 1994 LS400 had physical door light switches and from what I can see the RX400h has the same. Look along the door frame at the rear of the opening for the item shown, this is the door switch,check and see if it pushes in with your finger,if it does then carefully peel back the rubber cover to expose the fixing screw (if fitted),remove this and carefully withdraw the switch ( be carefull not to lose the wire down the door frame). Check the condition of the switch. If you remove the wire to the switch ( don't lose it as above) and touch the connector to ground (the screw hole) the light should come on indicating it is the switch at fault.

I've heard of problems with the power boot closure system before, if you have a search you may find the cure on the forums ( if I get the time I'll have a look for you) Regarding the windows just check the driver's over ride button hasn't been pushed in as this disables all the other windows, plenty of breakers around for a secondhand switch block which is probably the cause. I'm here :) You can get a good quality OEM specification fuel pump for around £60.00,example below. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-OEM-Replacement-Fuel-Pump-Lexus-LS400-1990-1998-/121755849570?hash=item1c5936d362:g:IPQAAOSwHmhV8PLf £200.00 to fit a new fuel pump! Must be London prices, probably a 2 hour job,less for a professional. To access the fuel pump the rear seat base (30 seconds to remove) and the upright section (20 minutes to remove), once this is out of the way the fuel tank is exposed, remove the pump access plate (5 minutes) and remove and refit the new pump (30 minutes).Put it all back together again. What are your symptoms making the fuel pump the culprit? My MOT garage are charging me only £200.00 + VAT labour to replace my timing belt and that is a 6-8 hour job.

One of the things often overlooked when the ABS warning light suddenly illuminates is the wiring under the driver's seat. You take the car to your local mechanic who is a good deal shorter than yourself, finding he cannot reach the pedals in comfort the 1st thing he does is move the seat forward. The last time that seat was probably moved was when the car was bought so things like plugs/sockets and wiring under there may be a little brittle and the seat movement has now broken something. Always worth checking under the seat before doing anything else. -
Not sure about the IS but on the LS there are 2 sensors 1 for the dash gauge and the other for the ECU, if it is the same on the IS the ECU one may be faulty even if the temperature gauge shows correct.

Check your CTS ( Coolant Temperature Sensor) these tend to go out of specification as they age and so give false engine temperature readings to the ECU. If the ECU then thinks the engine is cold it will enrich the fuel mixture increasing your fuel consumption and the engine will be down on power due to overfueling. This will not flag any codes either. You can check the sensor but for what they cost it may be best just to replace it with an OEM Lexus part.

No idea regarding the legal aspects but as this was the dealer's mistake (basically misdescribing the vehicle) I would be asking in addition to the refund the difference between the trade in allowance of £2300.00 and the retail value you would have expected to achieve if you had sold the car privately or placed on a dealers forecourt. Or consider the cost of finding a replacement Mercedes of the same year,mileage and specification as the one you had. Perhaps contacting the CAB or your local trading standards would be beneficial.

Fully synthetic 5w-30 for mine (Castrol Magnatec).
