  1. Hello Liam and welcome to the LOC. Roof bars sometimes appear on ebay but they were quite a rare part even when available from Lexus, it may be worth posting in the wanted section.

  3. Actually unbolting and removing the complete strut takes minutes, it's the seat removal and refitting that eats up the time, if you removed the rear seat and parcelshelf yourself before taking it to the garage that would save some labour costs then refit it all back home.
  4. That may have been me when I broke the 1997 I had, sold all 4 complete struts to another member.
  5. Welcome back Nigel, are you the same guy who also used to have a series I LS400 and came to the Doncaster meet? It is the engine coolant radiator they are refering to, there is a transmission intercooler mounted at the bottom, a leak occurs allowing the 2 fluids to mix and wrecking the gearbox. Suprised to hear an air strut is "misting" I thought there was no fluid in them to produce a mist being an air suspension unit.
  6. They are getting on a bit now with early models being 15 years old so mileage and service history becomes less of a selling point.

  8. Hi David and welcome to the LOC. What concerns me is that a Lexus dealer did an AC service and initially failed to diagnose a faulty compressor which would surely have been noticed during the service. You are right in thinking low gas levels would cause the symptoms you now have with the compressor cutting in and out quickly. There are certain proceedures which must be followed when discharging/recharging AC systems and one of these is to check for leaks using an inert gas and dye before recharging, question is if the gas level is low or zero where has the gas gone from a supposedly pre checked gas tight system. Personally I would go to one of the local AC places who offer a free check and ask them to check the system without mentioning what you have already been told to see if their conclusion confirms what Lexus said and then go from there. I would also ask for my payment for the AC service to be refunded as they haven't completed the job.

Yes, you need to get it up on the ramp with the wheels off and the suspension hanging freely then get the pry bar in and lever all the joints looking for excess movement ( MOT garage would be best as they know what should and shouldn't move and by how much). Favourites are upper control arms (bushes and ball joint) and LBJs but of course there are all the others on multilink suspension systems. Also check the brake calipers as they can cause knocking noises on some models.
  10. If you are the only/main driver I would ask why you need this facility, converting the existing system would probably not be cost effective for the benefit of 2 driving positions at the push of a button.
  11. There is no dipstick as they are"sealed for life" transmissions. Interestingly they also do not use the usual Toyota Type IV fluid either but WS type fluid.   12. Possibly killed a wheel speed sensor, did the garage use the hammer in type ball joint splitter?
  13. Maybe put the car in first gear then try, have you got the service manual for this job as torque settings are needed.

  16. With diesel engines a common problem is air getting into the fuel line overnight, the usual culprit is the fuel filter so check all the pipe connections and the filter for tightness. If there is nothing obvious try covering the pipe connections with petroleum jelly and see if the car starts normally the next morning, this would confirm the air leakage.
  17. Hello and welcome to the LOC. Chances are if the car was driven with the parking brake on the brake shoes will either need replacing or adjusting, there is very little thickness on the shoes to begin with and it can soon be worn down to the backing plates. Wheels and drum/discs off and examine the lining thickness, if there is still enough left there is a manual adjuster wheel at the bottom.
  18. Sewell Lexus may do, there were a couple but recently they have stopped exporting from the USA,there is also Amayama.com who export from Japan. Whichever way you decide don't forget the shipping will be increased and you may be subjected to delays and extra costs with UK customs.
  19. They took the lower engine off to replace the starter motor... Worryingly the starter motor is accessed from the top of the engine after removing the intake manifold. Given the problems already caused I would not be considering going back there, from the print out it looks like they have missed some sensor connections, the MAF being one plus the CTS and both O2 sensors. From the codes they have obviously cleared them and they have come back up (history and current) Have they replaced the gaskets or reused the old ones. I would be thinking along the lines of taking it to Lexus at their expense to get it repaired properly as the garage you have used obviously haven't got the necessary skills to change a plug in a lawnmower without cross threading it.
  20. Main thing is to check to ensure the hybrid battery health checks have been carried out and there is a comprehensive service history. You can check the MOT history now of any vehicle so take a look at this to see if there are any advisories or major fails in the past. Take an extended test drive listening for any suspension wear noises (knocking/banging), make sure everything works (push every button) and ensure no warning lights come on. You have more protection if buying from a motor dealer than a private seller if something goes wrong. If you want to post up the links for the cars you are looking at feel free.
