  1. If you think the choice of petrol is confusing now there were four grades going back some years. 2, 3, 4 and 5 Star ranging from 91 to 101 octane and all leaded of course. I remember the company I began working for in the mid 1970s had their own pump in the yard for the vans and managers’ cars, a mixture of Ford Escorts, Morris Marinas, Escort Estates, Vauxhall Chevannes and the boss’s Mark IV Cortina. They ran them all on the cheapest 2 Star and the engines used to constantly “pink” due to the fuel grade. At petrol stations you remained in the car while the “Attendant” put in the petrol, took the money and brought back your change. At around 3s/6d (17.5p) per gallon you could then fill an average car for less than a pound plus don’t forget those “Green Shield Stamps”

  3. Literally any wear in any suspension component could be the cause, front end causes could be worn track rod ends, lower ball joints, upper control arm bushes or ball joint. Sticking brake callipers can also produce strange knocks but these generally disappear if the brakes are held on gently. Suspension top mounts or broken spring. Anything mentioned in the last MOT? You really need to get the car in the air and have a good probe with a breaker bar to find the culprit.
  4. MOT garage managed to crush my jacking points on the four point I assume, Vauxhall garage did the same to the Vivaro.
  5. I posted in the LS forum a week or so back when I replaced my front pads and managed to put the nearside inner pad back with the shim to the disc. Took it out to road test and immediately noticed the noise, must be a bit of rust catching apply the brakes few times, still catching so back home. Remove wheel again to discover mistake...fortunately no damage to shim or disc.

  10. Driver’s side contains the “EMV(Electronic Multi Vision) and Navigation system HDD” So the lady that talks to you occasionally lives in there, the one that talks all the time lives in your house. 😀
  11. Hello and welcome to the LOC. If the rust is as bad as the MOT tester is saying then the whole section would need replacing. You can only effectively weld a patch plate to clean metal so he must have taken the repair patch far enough away from the rusty area to enable this. Five years is a subjective estimate, it depends on many things for example is the car subjected to winter road salt, is it garaged or left out, do you jet wash the underside regularly. I would monitor the situation and wait and see what happens at the next MOT if there is no obvious further damage evident.
  12. Given the complexity of the motorised boot hinges and roof syncronation, getting trim out and back and positioning the boot lid to gain access to the hinges I would personally have the paint job done. If you damage a hinge they are around £650.00 each!
  13. Hello and welcome to the LOC. It sounds like you’ve got yourself a prime example, low mileage is one thing, low ownership another but rarely combined. You’re right about the 450h boot space, only a couple of sets of golf clubs went in on the launch night. Used to work up your way contract to SSE from Perth depot, always stayed at the hotel between the railway and bus stations.

Nearly correct Malc....the beers will be duty free but £7.00 a pint ...... you will also have to stand outside on the deck to drink it unless there is a gazebo on the deck whereupon you can go inside. If a table is provided in the outside gazebo and your drink slides off the table whilst inside you cannot claim a replacement or refund as this would mean going inside to do so.

  16. A bit like the new Covid rules Malc. You can now go to the pub but not go inside. However if there is a gazebo or tent which is outside you can go inside it. If the gazebo is at the back of the pub you are allowed to enter the pub go through it and out of the back door in order to go outside to go inside the gazebo. If you need to use the toilet and this is located inside you are allowed to go inside to use it but must return outside when finished. Once you have returned outside you are allowed to go inside the gazebo providing you came outside the same way as you went inside and not took a wrong turn and ended up at the front by mistake. If that should happen the paragraph above applies. At some pubs you need to stand and wait outside and someone will escort you to suitable seating. This needs to be outside but could be located inside a gazebo or tent. You are only allowed a maximum of 6 people at your allocated table whether it be outside or inside an outside gazebo, exceeding this figure could result both in cramped conditions or damage to the seating. If this happens you could be asked to leave the premises by going outside the gazebo going inside the pub and then back outside. If your house is not at the pub but a reasonable distance away from it you are allowed to walk home from there and go inside.
  17. The HMRC website information is confusing to me, up to £36.00 as a gift is OK but then it states up to £135.00 for purchased goods and no additional courier “admin” charges? Happy to pay the VAT but saves me £12.00 if it comes through without. I made sure all the parts are UAE not a mix from Japan also.

  19. I still have the original discs on mine with hardly any lip present and no corrosion. The only time I see rust slightly on them is after washing the car but this soon rubs off. Admittedly it spends most of its time in a dry garage and hasn’t hit 100k yet.
  20. Exactly my take on things, I couldn’t accept the prices especially the thermostat housing rubber O ring seal at £10.00 from LPD! To add further insult their shipping (£5.99) was more than the standard shipping cost from Amayama UAE at £5.49 although I opted for expedited at £13.49 delivered to my door.

Power Steering Idle Up Valve. LPD discounted price £122.00 Nengum £36.00 Amayama 35.00 Coolant Thermostat LPD £29.00 Nengun No response Amayama £6.90 Thermostat Cover gasket O ring seal. LPD £10.00 Nengun No response Amayama £2.09 Even including expedited shipping from the UAE and £12.00 VAT the total cost is £72.00 compared with UK prices of £167.00 for the very same parts from the same manufacturer. Just had confirmation and should be here by the end of the month.
  22. Also check the battery condition, it may appear OK and start the car fine but an internal fault can take out the alternator. Also ensure the main earth cables from the battery to body and engine are fitted and secured as poor earthing can cause its demise.
  23. Apparently not, having looked at HMRC website only 20% VAT is payable on the total cost i.e. parts and shipping, not entirely sure on the admin charge from the UK courier. Royal Mail will insist, DHL may let it straight through and Hermes will probably lose it. 😀 Having further checked there should be no UK courier fees as the goods are valued below £135.00.
