Thanks to everyone who contributed to the answers. I have more than enough to work with now and feel a lot more informed moving forward.4 points

Had the same problem. The nut holding on the rear wiper was heavily corroded and I was reluctant to force it in case I damaged the rear screen. Copious and regular applications of lubricant around the spindle area seem to have resolved the problem and no "screeching" now for over a year.3 points

When I got my new ultra light alloy wheels on my LS430 I hand Dunlop all season tyres fitted. Now I'm on day 4 of snow and ice. Tyres perform brilliantly. Tonight I took my usual route home from visiting my friend who is not very well. Took their dogs out for a walk. Never took into account a 1 in 5 hill with a 90 degree right hand turn. Got up the hill slowly with traction control engaged. Never switched on snow mode as LS430 would drive normally. What surprised me was one I could get up hill. Two there was no wagging from the back. If I had tried this in my 2nd car (Mondeo) fitted with winter tyres I would probably never of made it. Going down hill touching brakes never got ABS kicking in. Just a good reduction in speed. My LS430 is always giving pleasant surprises. Makes me wonder how much testing Lexus did on LS430 before signing off for production. Try doing this trip in a BMW or Mercedes I bet they would fail.2 points

Hi Did you mean to type 10 mm rather than 10 cm? 10 mm would be fine from the maximum but 10 cm would be below the minimum mark.2 points

Reading between the lines you probably appreciated him for the same reason I did. Not his political beliefs ,but the simple fact there was less pretence about him. You got what you could see.2 points

A couple of years ago I drove my LS430 quite a bit on snowy/slushy roads and was also impressed with her surefootedness, and that was on summer tyres as it's rare we need anything else down here in the wilds of Saaaaf Essex. You do need to be smooth and think ahead but even when she loses traction it is smooth and manageable. My '98 Honda Legend was better due to the big heavy engine over the front wheels (FWD) but otherwise this is the best snow car I have driven. Both my mid-90s company Mondeo's were terrible on snow but then they were manuals.2 points

The 4GR engine in these cars is chain-driven, so talk of any cam belt being replaced is false. I guess it's possible they meant the serpentine drive belts, if the water pump was indeed replaced. I think I would lean towards the 2007 car despite the higher miles. Looks like it could be an SE-L and appears pretty clean with previous/current owner having had it for a while. Nice price too. The newer car would have more Bluetooth connectivity, but that's about the only real difference of note, apart from the cosmetic changes introduced in 2009. If the screen and all other functions are still working, it could maybe just need a new map DVD to get the navigation working again. Either way, a replacement nav unit can be swapped in at a reasonable cost. Or, just replace the whole thing with one of the Chinese Android head units that are available.1 point

Yes same position on Gen 2 and as shown by @NemesisUK above. Currently have my charger connected that was ready for my trip away.😀1 point

Rusted spindle due lack of lubrication - free it off and apply copious grease under the rubber boot - been there done that (my wiper seized up completely).1 point

Given I was a bit hesitant before I purchased (for fun, mostly) some stuff for the car, I thought I would post it here in case it would help any of you.... and likewise, in case someone else found something that would be fun to have, I may wanna know! So these are links to items I'm actually glad I got (disclaimer: I'm not on Aliexpress payroll or anything): Car seat gap fillers (the missus said she does not know where to rest her phone) Storage bag for the trunk This is good to keep the road triangle, the first-aid kit, and all of those things tidy in one place Lexus umbrella for the trunk it rarely rains in Britain but just in case Anti-kick pads for the back of the front seats they wipe clean easily Neck pillows (mostly good if you need to take a quick nap, or for your co-pilot to do so –we groundhogs do a lot of that)1 point

I have never been - and am never likely to be - a Labour Party voter. But there are several members of that political Party that I both like and admire. One such was John Prescott - Lord Prescott - whose death yesterday at the age of 86 has just been announced. Unlike some of the current crop of Labour ministers, John Prescott never felt the need to enhance his CV. He was very proud of his early career as a Ship Steward with Cunard and then equally modest about his genuine BSc in Economics at the University of Hull. The tributes today will be fulsome and well deserved and will come from those who represent the whole range of political opinion. I doubt we shall see his like again! ☹️1 point

There was a recent thread which suggested that oil levels should be checked when the engine was up to operating temperature......1 point

Quite right Malcolm - although of course he only actually owned one Jag, the other being a Ministerial car of which he had the use. However he never felt the need to apologise for enjoying the luxuries of success. Apart from being ‘Two Jags’ the other thing he himself thought he would be most remembered for was his reaction to being assaulted by the egg throwing Craig Evans. As a successful amateur boxer in his youth, he greatly enhanced his reputation by responding - most appropriately - with a straight left. 😊.1 point

Brake fluid is changed every 2 years/20k miles on a major service - personally I wouldn't top up on the minor service between if it was more than half way between min and max, you are arguably doing more harm than good by opening up the reservoir and allowing dirt and moisture in. Was the service in May a minor or major service? Coolant looks low, although I have noticed that some Lexus vehicles will expel coolant from the reservoir down to near the min. level. Certainly worth keeping an eye on it to see if the level goes down further. Sadly the 100 point check is little more than a quick visual check and if everything is above the min. level it won't get touched.1 point

I generally jut touch the door handle to lock the car. That way you can see the mirrors fold and know its locked.1 point

F sport looks nice but almost definitely compromises overall ride quality and comfort which i what the ES is all about. The takumi has all the bells and whistles, premium plus would be a good compromise.1 point
-
This is correct. In the UK the only thing different about the fsport is the instrument cluster, some styling elements and the suspension dampers. The rest of it is identical to other trims so no limited slip differential on the IS300H at least, as far as I am aware.1 point
-
Personally, I'd skip the F-Sport as it adds nothing other than expensive to repair suspension. An ES just isn't an F-Sport type of car. Its a comfortable mile eater.1 point
-
Instead of replacing the entire seat have you considered just reupholstering them. Im sure you will be able to find some shop locally. If sourcing replacement seats i would definitely recommend buying like for like you should be able to find the same on ebay or at a breaker. Pretty sure the fsport seats are different design wise at least. With regards to re-colouring most recolouring balm / creams may not work as well or might take loads of applications to get the desired result because they are meant for absorbent leather and even if your leather is real and absorbent my understanding is that most leather seats are factory coated with a layer of flexible lacquer to seal the colour in which make the seats less absorbent also. Rather you could consider leather paint to refurb your seats. Something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leather-Repair-Colourant-Suitable-Handbag/dp/B09HXDMVS9/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_sspa?crid=12DL469760DMO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.CtuXNRBpXtLxf_oZJVNQb3m9BafwBlBxoc8EXKn9PirvCuFW9Q0lJpf_FzifqQMliiUWtwVuIWntWvI4HVeN6iecog57o7kmRN6vY9QGk0TBbgscojt1OYba0Pa0xDH-vHF5SGhjN0GeSSobIlSmdel5T_A_rkr3voW_Q7EOn4aEU8YJoGP4-Ofx44CEXR-QpT__4SOF5ivzCPdlgciM2w.AZL6SknVy4Q_Pm5RX0cpWNpHIpB12xISl1hq8Uuzemk&dib_tag=se&keywords=leather%2Bpaint&qid=1732118524&sprefix=leather%2Bpaint%2Caps%2C97&sr=8-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9waG9uZV9zZWFyY2hfYXRm&psc=1&th=1 You can DIY this with a sponge but you need to prep the surface really well by cleaning it thoroughly and even using specific solvents to remove the lacquer coating.1 point

These cars are very reliable - mine is a 2014 reg IS 300h and has now covered 144k miles (I purchased it in 2016 with 40k miles on it) and nothing serious going wrong in all that time (main items have been new front wheel bearings at 80k miles and one new rear caliper at 150k miles). Changed front discs and pads at 80k miles (as the front wheel bearings were being done) but the disc/pad would have lasted quite a bit longer. Changed the rear discs and pads at 150k miles as the sticking caliper had unduly worn one side, otherwise they would have had another 100k miles of wear left in them. As all discs tend to suffer from corrosion and pitting over the years, they may need replacing just for that reason before they actually wear out. Rear tyres I replace every 20k miles and fronts every 40k miles. Make sure you service it according to schedule (every 10k miles or 12 months, whichever comes first) and the items you mention above will be covered (see the service book you should get with the car for the details of what needs changing when). In general it's the usual interim service one year / 10k miles (mainly oil and oil filter) and major service the next year / 10k miles (includes additional checks / replacements). Spark plugs should be changed every 60k miles (though Lexus tend to change them every 6 years even if the car has done less that mileage). First engine coolant change is at 100k miles (possibly 10 years if that comes first I think) and first inverter coolant change is at 150k miles (there may be a time based change as well for lower mileage). Differential oil, air filters and pollen filters have certain interval changes too that I don't recall at the moment, but it's all in the service book. E-CVT gearbox is down as lifetime fill by Lexus - so no change is scheduled (there is some debate on here about whether the oil in this should be changed or not - your choice - but it's not included by Lexus at any service interval). Cars have been known to go 250k+ miles with no problem. Mine has never been changed. The Lexus service activated warranty (Relax) when a car is serviced by Lexus is free with each service and is automatically renewed until the car is 10 years old or has covered 100k miles (whichever comes first). The hybrid battery can be kept in warranty until the car is 15 years old with unlimited mileage by continuing having the car serviced by Lexus or paying for a separate Hybrid Health Check with Lexus every 10k miles / 12 months (whichever comes first) and costs about £70 each time. There is also a Lexus 10 Year Plus Extended Warranty for cars over outside the Relax warranty that can be renewed annually for cars up to 15 years old / 150k miles (whichever comes first) at ~£500 per annum (which includes Lexus Roadside Assist) though dealers are often not well clued up about this... I had this in place until recently for my car after 100k miles as I have do quite a high mileage. I had the front wheel bearings and the rear caliper all done under warranty). Of course, the usual caveats over buying any used car apply, but find a good one that has been well cared for (serviced according to schedule etc.) and you should get many years/miles of motoring out of it. 250k miles without major issues would not be uncommon. Trim levels are hard to determine by the way as cars are not easily identifiable by trim. There were trim names from new but these did not always follow a simple hierarchy (did not always build on the features of a previous level) - then there were also options that could be specified. Main features probably most important to most people are standard or premium sat nav and audio, Mark Levinson top end audio, leather trim with/without electric seats. A few other gadgets etc may carry some weight with you but best to check each car for what it actually has rather the relying on general trim names (many cars aren't listed with a trim name for this reason). The IS 300h had a slight facelift in 2017 - nothing particularly major so I wouldn't worry too much about that. One thing to know is that cars that are pre-2017 have a VED of £10 (will be £20 next year) whereas post-2017 cars after the government changed to the flat rate have the full flat rate VED (around £190 per annum) - so if you are looking at two cars around 2016/2017 age worth bearing in mind if you want to save some money each year. I'm sure others will furnish you with some more info. Attached is a brochure from 2014 (so pre face-lift) that might be of help when looking at what is trim levels etc. IS300h brochure 2014 08.pdf1 point

This is the sort of oil filter wrench you need. As I said, don't try and use anything else. Also, when refitting the filter you need to torque it to no more than !8ft.lbs - if overtightened they are very hard to get off again. Instead of deflection let's get back to core. You defended Trump on the issue of had he actually made a statement referring to the injection of disinfectant/cleaning substances. You were wrong. The video and the words are crystal clear. He said it. However, rather than own that you would rather deflect to a stance ,ok he said it ,but here's all the good reasons and how dare you criticise etc. Actually, my criticism of him was fairly lame. Clearly , in that video he wasn't speaking with belief or conviction so much as he was interested to see if anyone thought as an idea it had legs. Fair enough. I actually just don't get why you want to defend the indefensible rather be open minded and have a look at it. I didn't know whether he said it ,or not, but it took only two seconds to find out. My last word on that subject is I expect disinfectant and cleaning materials were mentioned (rightly) by someone that they had a role to play in managing the transmission of the virus. Someone else without any medical knowledge may have picked up on that and wondered innocently can the use of same be extended? As booh boohs go I have seen and heard worse.1 point

Hold hard there troops, I think I've solved my own dilemma. I had a similar situation in the car before last that I owned, so I bought a cable that plugged into the OBD port and I kept it I've remembered. So as long as it's long enough I'll use that and if not I'll get a longer one.1 point

They have a bit of velcro in the back so they attach to the lower side of the back of the seat (woolly texture) and stay up firmly there, but you can remove them easily too.1 point

I first used Ali Express many years ago and then forgot about it. Lately I went back on it and was amazed at some of the prices - they have come a long way with delivery guarantee and late delivery re-imbursement. My son ordered a beanie hat for 89p! - it didnt get delivered on time so they gave us £1 coupon 😆 I have ordered some small bits for my car aswell and well pleased with quality.1 point

Here's an example of value nowadays: Curtain tie back from Amazon - £5 plus delivery £4.99 = £9.99. Local old established ironmongers in town centre - £1.95 that's it. There's a message in there somewhere.1 point

Haven't purchased anything for the Lexus, but have for a recently bought Abarth 595. A centre arm rest for £26 delivered. Normally about £75 from places in the UK. Best bargains have been for the alloy wheels. I removed the centre hub caps, and replaced with wheel centres with the Abarth logo, and chromed wheel nut caps. Did all 4 wheels for less than £6!! 4 valve caps with the Abarth logo for 75p as well! Delivered within a week.1 point

I can recommend these mudflaps: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003549606878.html? As most of the oem parts are probably made in China anyway, it may well be that parts you buy here are made in the same factory1 point

I’d very much endorse the fitting of mudflaps - although I didn’t get mine from Aliexpress.1 point

Strangely I was thinking of starting a similar thread. Things on there are so cheap you cant go wrong. I am extremely surprised at the shipping times as well most things arrive in around a week. I had ordered quite a lot of stuff for the IS from Aliexpress that i thought was great. 1 - Leather Gearshift knob - a good high quality replica of the one that comes on the premier variant. Fit my exec model perfectly and was good quality couldn't tell that it was an Aliexpress fake. Cost me around £25 2 - Mudflaps - By far the best £15 spent. Prevents the doors from getting splashed by the front wheels. They were DIY friendly to fit but the screws and fittings that came with it were useless had to use my own 3 - keyfob cover. Had a tpu one that was hard to press the buttons. Ordered a new alcantara one this time for my GS. £3ish for the TPU one and £11ish for the alcantara one 4- Auto mirror folding module - was easy to install and did what it said. Two clicks of the lock button folded the mirrors automatically cost me around £15-20 5- Tyre pressure diaplay module - This module sends the tyre pressure recorded by the TPMS sensors to the display. This is a feature that is not standard on lower trim levels. Cost me around £25. Things that didn't work out 10.3 inch Android screen - Not saying all are bad but the one i ordered was. It didn't fit correctly seemed to be of not so great quality. Overall i couldn't justify spending nearly £500 on the car that i would never recover. And i was right. When trading in my car while buying the GS300H no one cared about how tidy my car was, how well i maintained it or what optional add ons i had. They just looked at the overall paint condition, asked whether it had full service history. They the punched the reg into their system and were only willing to give me what their system spat out. There is a type 2 connector for destination based AC chargers (wall charger at home) which will charge at 6.6 kWh - around 11.5 hours for 0-100%. Then there is a CHAdeMO connector for 'higher' speed DC charging, which is limited up to 50 kWh and will charge 10-80% in around 80 minutes. There is no CCS2 connector, which is the most common DC charging connector.1 point

Yeah, this sounds like a fault to me. I’m really happy with the dipped lights on mine, loads of clear vision ahead. And I live in the countryside too.1 point

Call me cynical but I always do a quick visual check as soon as possible after a service. Lexus have proven to be OK, not perfect. But based on experience where the concessionaire garage ( who should know better ) have given back a vehicle with the following issues after a service: Gearbox oil removed but not refilled = empty = very hot = severe damage. 4 x spark plugs cross-threaded. Charged for windscreen wash when I had only just refilled it. Service schedule includes diff oil change - but not done - but charged for it. Wrong tyre pressures. Cross threaded sump plug - leaking. Work not done but charged for e.g. air filter. Wrong oil viscosity specification ( cheaper stuff put in - hard to prove until I saw the bulk dispenser full of cheap oil used for all cars ). OK that's over quite a few years, but you can see why I am wary.0 points

Woken up this morning by neighbours and police to be told that 2 guys had attempted to steal my car from outside the house. It was daylight, there were parents taking their kids to school and yet these brazen scumbags were seen trying to steal the car via the front headlight, the police chased them but to no avail. They had made 2 cuts to the steering wheel, trying to get around the steering lock and because of this they have snapped the left indicator stork clean off, so now no indicators or ability to turn lights on/off. Second attempt in a month....i really could scream. Now got all the aggro of going through the insurance and i bet they have another go at taking it...........ARGHHHHH!!!!0 points
