  1. https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/are-labour-about-to-u-turn-on-the-winter-fuel-payment/ Starmer is fast discovering what we all knew. Government is difficult, and a big majority comes with its own challenges. Labour will usually prioritise the ‘young’ over the ‘elderly’ as it knows more of its support is likely to come from younger (less experienced and more naive?) voters. The choice has been made. Public sector pay increases at the expense of the Winter Fuel Allowance. It’s a clear decision point, and one which I feel they’ll live to regret. They are, after all, only the ‘current’ Government…

  3. It’s quite clear, to me anyway, that OAPs have little positive value to this Govt , indeed the sooner they’re shot of us the better it will be for Rachel Reeves Black Hole elimination ……. DWP payments would significantly diminish and Sir Keir’s financial problems would somewhat evaporate …….. or indeed enable more funds to pay the Civil Servants and other State Payroll beneficiaries I'm being cynical I guess BUT that’s the way I’m feeling …….. it’s just disgraceful that many many 000s of those OAPs less fortunate than us here might really have to make the choice between heating or eating this winter As I’ve said before here …. SHAME ON YOU SHAME ON YOU Sir Keir Starmer there will be many unnecessary deaths placed firmly at your door this winter Malc

  4. Len I think you must have experienced a "senior moment" 😂. Trying to return the WFA is tantamount to you implying that they were wrong in giving it to you in the first place - heaven forfend As I mentioned in a previous post withdrawing of the WFA is not about saving money it's about means testing as a principle across all "benefits". So we are now in this bizarre situation of having to qualify to receive any State largesse, the State Pension being one of them. If you don't then over time all your assets will be drained away until you do qualify and hence becoming a vassal of the State and one of them. Like you I am fortunate to have come from an era where aspirations, ambitions and above all self-sufficiency were encouraged traits and characteristics. But I fear these are no longer too be admired but admonished as not representing todays anti-evolutionary stance of equality, fairness, diversity etc. as they pursue their la-la land entropic views of how the world should be run. 🙁

  5. MrsT and I have always been in this fortunate position - and yet have always received it! When it first arrived I contacted the Pensions Department and informed it that we don’t need it, save on the admin and send it to someone else. If our circumstances changed, I would get back to it. A protracted debate then ensued because the Civil Servants involved apparently couldn’t accommodate this request. So rather than spend any more of our diminishing lifespan arguing the point, we just accept it with good grace and pass it on. I’m much more concerned that the various personal arrangements we made to provide a modest but comfortable retirement after long working lives will be targeted by a Government now desperate to buy off those who funded it and who wish to impose their version of social equality and freedom. As one pundit recently pointed out, the Labour Party has formed four Governments in its hundred year history. All but one have ended with higher unemployment and a reduced economic situation than when it entered office - the exception being the very first because that only lasted seven months! Unfortunately, it appears that this is a lesson that has to be relearnt every couple of generations.

  8. It never works out cheaper buying at auction, especially as private person. The only way it is done - a VAT registered business buys from auction, so they write-off the cost of purchase from their VAT, then they fix the car in the dirtiest possible way and sell it for minimal profit, but they make their money back on the VAT. Also what kills many savings are extortionate fees. Savings are not great to begin with, cars have plenty of issues that you can't know before buying and then you also end-up paying like £1,500 auction fees. Needless to say - you have no recourse if you buy lemon and they all are lemons. All cars in auctions in my experience are worst examples imaginable of said vehicle. Just think about the car that is in horrible shape, scratched, dirty, not serviced... so it will be twice as bad. No car that can be sold at dealer lot ends up in auction, certainly not fairly recent car like UX. At least this is my experience with Copart.

  10. I can only comment on my experiences with RRG Lexus Bolton over the last 8 yrs. i have found both sales and service departments exemplary. My latest experience was for the latest recall for software update for front camera 2 weeks ago. a loan car was made available and on collection of my own vehicle it had been washed AND filled up with fuel. So no complaints here.

  11. That to me would have been the most sensible solution and if RR had done the right analysis first just maybe she would have come to the same conclusion in terms of what it would actually save - but of course she didn't and just made an unfounded change to the detriment of many. Given Liz Truss' short lived reign, what RR is doing is at least as bad if not worse - but in this case she is virtually unassailable unless enough Labour MPs got behind those already voicing their concerns but can't see that happening unfortunately...

  13. Hi everyone Thought I would update this thread on the latest in this saga. I have my car back, got it back in 3rd week of June. The repair costs amounted to £9800. However, I don't agree with half of it because most of the scratches (which were barely visible) were already there as I have dogs. But the repair place naturally hunted for every single thing they could find to pump up the costs but not so high that insurance wrote it off. Anyway, whatever, they did a good job overall even though their communication was shoddy and rude. I sent the car to Lexus who were very good in giving it a good examination and they picked up that the WiFi box had been removed (I wondered why I couldn't get the Link app working again) and that there is some trim inside the front bumper which has not been seated correctly. Lexus want 200 quid to remove the bumper and sort this out but I don't see why I should pay for that so I'll be taking this up with insurance because the repair place are not answering me (as expected 🙄🙄). Lexus also gave me a quote of £620 to put in a new WiFi box. My question to all of you who know more about Lexus than me is, do I really need this back in the car? I have managed to source a new WiFi box myself but I have no idea how to fit it and program it, does anyone know where I can find this information? Otherwise I just won't bother as the tracker I have fitted does pretty much the same thing. In addition, when I collected my car, it was foul. There was apple juice in the car when it was stolen which had exploded all over the front floor and it STANK. I have had the car cleaned and detailed, and scrubbed the rubber mats with soap and a power washer, but the smell is in the leather mostly in the front seats. Does anyone have any idea what I can clean with to rid the smell? I am a microbiologist so my germophobia is real, I have meticulously cleaned the car myself as well as a valet service and left no crevice unturned 😂 yet the smell remains. Any advice? The car is running absolutely perfectly and we have tested out every single system under various conditions and everything is 100% which I'm glad and relieved about. My insurance excess in all this was £350. Other than that, I am glad to have my car back!! And so is my German Shepherd!

  14. Unfortunately, my only experience of Lexus main dealers is with Lexus Milton Keynes, so I’ve no idea if it’s typical. But ever since I bought the car from them when it was less than three years old, they have been nothing less than excellent! The car’s rarely been back for anything other than a regular service and MoT, which is always organised very efficiently - and sometimes I’ve used their Collect Service. Everyone I’ve met has been welcoming and a pleasure to deal with. Lately the Services have been accompanied by a video walkthrough by the Service Mechanic to highlight anything of particular interest I get regular emails from the original sales guy to check if I’m still happy with the car - and ‘special invitations’ to sales events. Unfortunately, there isn’t a better Lexus for me than the one I already have. So if anything, I’m a bit of a disappointment to them!

  17. So right, Malcolm. It’s astonishing that having spent a substantial period of time as the Shadow Minister, the first decision that Reeves makes appears to be so flawed. Unfortunately, it highlights the general lack of expertise on the new Front Bench. For example, have any of them actually run a successful business in a competitive market? Certainly not the boy Streeting, now in charge of the NHS - the UK’s largest employer and currently the world’s fifth largest, just ahead of Amazon! Apart from that omission, quite how studying History as opposed to, say, science or medicine, is considered an appropriate knowledge base I have yet to hear him explain.

  18. I have an analogous experience in Greece in that the dealer tends to address Lexus owners the same as Toyota owners. No knocking Toyota owners as they deserve respect also, but I do expect a different treatment for a luxury premium brand company such as Lexus. I have friends with BMWs and they seem to have a whole different level of service and attention. You might consider to make a formal diplomatic letter of complaint to Lexus corporate (Japan) informing of sub standard service at the specific dealer, if you feel it is bad enough.

  19. Well, that's good to hear Len. My complaint has gone off to the dealer general manager earlier today. My experience with them yesterday was pretty shocking. Well over 5 hours driving in my car and had to return home in it, as they weren't expecting me (further details above in an earlier post). Now it looks like I will have to put another 200 miles on my car to deliver it and then pick it up once they've finished with it. I'll take the tank of fuel they've offered, and I'll take a new wing mirror and the fixing of any faults found...and I will leave it to the general manager to work out what price he might put on my time - taken, and yet to come - and the total inconvenience of all this. The total lack of communication between them all at their end beggars belief. 'Nuff said, but I will come back to report how this all plays out for sure😡

  21. I have had hours of fun with this issue on my car. When I get a chance I will be removing the trim and disconnecting then reconnecting, there’s nothing to lose. My theory is it’s a dry joint or something. I’ve tried pulling various fuses, etc. but as you say remaking those connections could clear a bit of corrosion. I’ll report back.

  26. I have just taken my nearly 10 year old 150k mile IS 300h in for its service. I was treated very well, offered coffee and biscuits, looked after and everything was done to make my stay as pleasant as possible. I was offered an option to discuss buying a new car whilst I was there (emailed me beforehand) which I politely declined. There were older cars than mine there too being serviced. I think all comments are very dealer and circumstances dependant. In many cases one person has a bad experience and another good at the same place.

  27. Thanks Phil. I’ve been thinking the same thing. Let me check with the garage first. If they charge extra labour costs, I’ll wait and do the serpentine belt next year when it’s due. Otherwise, I’ll replace it this year since it would only involve the cost of parts.

  28. I thought that when i saw mallet and monkey wrench😄 I took them apart, straight forward as you pointed out. Pulling one of the mirrors and a little bit of a plastic clip snapped off with it. Probably a job better doing when its hot weather out. They looked ok, not too bad. Brushed them off and went over them with some ACF50. Ideally, better painting like you did but looks like rain. I think they will be ok for some time to come. Cleaned housing out, went back together ok, even with missing plastic. A few of the screws were quite heavily corroded, might replace those if i have to do it again. Cheers for that, end of that saga.

While I realise everyone is different in terms of build and getting comfortable, I personally find the lumbar support on the seat comfortable and have had no issues.

  31. It's obviously good practice to replace idlers and tensioners, especially after so long, the difference being that the aux belt won't cause severe engine damage if it or its components fail like a cam belt would. It's also worth mentioning that replacing the aux belt on the 430 is simplicity itself, taking less than 10 mins!

  32. There is the General Reviews forum where there are some dealer reviews already. There have also been several threads on the subject over the years - this one for example:
    1 point
  33. There are a lot of information about that already, separating it into separate forum would become basically a "name and shame" game and it seems LOC isn't in favour of that. Nobody stops you from starting a thread in "general discussion"... (as you did) and ask that question. I can start with saying that I always had mediocre experience with all Lexus dealers I have dealt with in UK, the experience is purely transactional - the more you spend (or they can make on top of that), the better experience you get. This contrasts heavily with Lexus dealers in say US, where it feels more like a cult and people working there are "true believers" in customer satisfaction e.g. you come from the street and you right away are treated to same high standard. That does not happen in UK, you will be mostly ignored, but if you flash a Rolex and say you may be interested in buying brand new higher class car (RX/LC) then you suddenly are treated very well. Likewise, when you bring 150k miles 10 years old Lexus, you are treated like trash, but when you bring 2 years old 40k miles Lexus for service and you indicated you may be looking for upgrade, then you are suddenly called in to drink coffee with principal, test drive LC and discuss your upgrade plans. Generally, in comparison with other makes - Lexus still has better dealer experience, I had horrible experiences with most German brands - BMW, Audi and MB, also bad experience with Volvo. Good experiences with Mazda. Lexus is probably still the best, but I can't shake off the knowledge that it could be much better when you open your wallet (or they hope you will do it). Talking about specific dealers: Gatwick (Steven Eagell) - mostly positive, bought old used car (6 years old just over 100k miles) from them and handover was decent, not like new car, but car was cleaned, parked in front of the entrance, serviced (book not stamped), full inspection sheet before pick-up, paperwork ready (they clearly were prepared for time of appointment and waiting for me), no mechanical issues after pick-up or in the many years after. Reading (Jemca) - bad experience, used car (only 2 years old, 40k miles) was in poor condition, dealer lied about condition, promised to rectify the issues, but failed to fix them, took long time to prepare the car, promised to inspect the car but ultimately failed to do it (and paid dearly for it when it turned out they sold me car without any brake pads to speak off), promised to pick me up from local station on day of delivery failed to arrive and told me to book a taxi, car was dirty on day of delivery, just thrown into the corner of the car lot (seems like it wasn't even moved for weeks after test drive), issues where just partially resolved (e.g. A-pillar cover still had burns/scratches on it and they simply posted it to me a month later to fit it myself, stone chips which they said that they will ask detailer to rectify were simply covered in some mud that you can wipe off with finger, somebody botched the seat bolster repair etc.). Also as part of sale I had 2 years service plan thrown in, servicing was nothing special, second service they forgotten they included it free and tried to charge me, but after some back and forward they covered it in "goodwill". Also going back to brakes, on inspection after test drive I mentioned that brakes were squealing and visually looked like discs are deeply grooved and had a lip. I joked that "if I bring the car to service like that you would advise to replace discs", to which they answered "the car was inspected when it was PX 2 months ago and remaining brake discs/pads are within spec." To which I told "because it was 2 months ago, I would like you to do new inspection now before I agree to buy it". They promised to do it, I asked on the day on pick-up if they did it and they said "yes brakes are fine all passed". Good for me was that before sending the deposit over I sent them summary of all things that they promised to include with sale and they have acknowledged it to me. As such when 9 month and barely 2700 miles later I took the car in for warranty job and another Lexus dealer advised me that I literally have no brakes in the rear and have maybe 1mm of pads left in the front, they could not wiggle themselves out of replacing ALL brakes, pads and callipers FOC, for something like £2000. Woodford and Hainault (Hills Motors) - mediocre, used to service cars with them, but the works is always half done, had breakdown few miles away from service (literally 7 miles, on the way home), overall quality hit and miss, service is hit an miss, several times they forgotten to reserve courtesy car, once offered a taxi as apology, but forgotten to mention I will pay for it (thanks for £40 "goodwill" ride that I had to pay for myself), seems to like to upsell some services, also seems to like to charge for parts that should be included in service. But that was on old Lexus, yet when I was servicing my new car (relatively speaking) they were very pleasant. Also their sales were always very pleasant when they hope to sell new RC and LC for me (that is where I get my 24h or weekend test drives), in other hand there were several times where they forgotten about appointments and when I arrived at reception they had no clue who I am, why I am there and person who meant to have appointment with me wasn't even working that day. That said they really gone out of their way to do warranty job for me, even put up with Lexus Reading shenanigans as swaps of courtesy cars, also I drove their courtesy NX for 3 weeks during warranty job (perhaps they made killing out of £4200 bill for seat motor fix). Lexus Southend (Steven Eagell) - not really much experience, but I had reserved test drive with them and they called me on the day of appointment to advise me they no longer have a car. I guess that happens... but seemed little bit last minute. Had same in Sidcup (Jemca) and Sheffield (don't even know who owns it, maybe even independent). Again - not much one can make of that, seems like fairly common with any dealer, Sheffield was probably worst, because I specifically travelled and stayed with family just to see the car next day and next day they told me they don't have it, meaning whole trip was waste. Sidcup was also bad in other way - I actually arrived and only then they realised they don't have the car, so offered me to test drive different car (all cool except I have driven many RC300h and my interest was not so much in general, but about particular car). As you can see there is no particular theme, Steven Eagell seems to be largest and probably best franchise, but there is plenty of issues with them as well. Jemca really feels to me like the "Toyota" dealer that sells Lexus on the side, they haven't grown-up to sell Lexus, their staff does not know much about the cars, for them it is just Toyota with different badge. Hills seems to put more effort in to sales, but aftersales are not great. All in all, I would not trust them further than I can throw them, used cars sales are razor thin margin and cut-throat business, servicing they do because they have to (it is choir for them), however they will snap your hand for warranty work, also they like new car sales. So all the same rules applies - inspect the car, have everything in writing, expect issues, expect to deal with them, just know where you stand and hold your ground, there is nothing magical, it just feels misleadingly "safe", but you always on thin ice there. Lexus still has best dealer experience, but not because they are that amazing, but rather because everyone else are so horrible. I know it sounds quite depressing, but that is my experience with UK dealer network. I have had Lexus in other countries and it was different. Also it seems in the past it was different, but as Lexus became more established player in the market the magic and fairy dust kind of disappeared.

  34. Remember most Lexus dealerships will give a 10% / 15% discount on servicing if your a Lexus owners club member. MOT, £25 at ATS with Groupon plus £2 of if you use a cash back site ( £23 ), I have taken both my cars there for the past 4 years, very honest MOT, even my 19 year old Nissan has passed every year.

I went standard cross bars so I could fit my DIY kayak cradle. There are not cheap, but actually the only option as I don't think Lexus do their own version (and if they did, you'd need a mortgage). 43. HI I followed your advice Phil, arranged for the car to go in to Lexus and asked for a technician to test drive it with us in the car. More than slightly worried as the fault was intermittent and may not occur on demand. However within minutes the very knowledgeable technician identified the fault, he suspected that it was a fuel injector. They checked the injectors and found that it was Injector No 2, which Lexus replaced under the Relax Warranty. The car is now driving smoother than ever. Colin, you were correct with your suggestion regarding the fuel injector. "Result!"

  44. Over the weekend we decided to visit Newbury, I parked my vehicle in a small car park a little way from the Town centre, the surface of the car park was quite rough and consisted of a mixture of hard soil and very course shingle. After shopping we returned to the car, I switched on the ignition and noticed that there was a warning light on the dashboard indicating low tire pressure on the N/S/R. I inspected the tire and noticed that there was a screw/ nail lodged within the tire. I proceeded home(30miles) on my deflated run- flat trying not to exceed 50MPH, to be honest I did not really notice a great change in the vehicle stability whilst driving. When we arrived home and I inspected the tire again, I was quite amazed how the good the sidewall of the tire looked after travelling that distance without air. The screw had penetrated the tire quite close to the sidewall so I thought that it would be better to replace the tire. Kwik Fit refuses to repair run flat tires as they cannot guarantee the condition of the sidewalls if the tire has been driven without air for any distance. I managed to locate a tire through a company called 'Black Circles', the tire that I have chosen was a Michelin Primacy 4 Zero Pressure 225/50 R18 V 95. I have chosen this tire because it offers less road noise (69db) compared to my noisy Bridgestone tires. I ordered the tire(3 days for delivery) the tire was sent to my local tire fitting company. I took the my vehicle to the the tire company to have the new tire fitted, unfortunately the tire fitter damaged the tire pressure sensor during the removal of the old tire. They did not have a spare sensor in stock but ordered one for delivery the following day. The following day I returned to the tire garage, they fitted and calibrated the sensor to match my vehicle. The fitter informed that the tire pressure warning light would go away after driving the vehicle for several miles, unfortunately the warning light remained illuminated. I referred to the Lexus owners manual, within the manual is a section that informs you about tire sensor replacement. Apparantley when you have a new tire sensor fitted to your vehicle you have to register the ID code, this is done via the multi function display on the dashboard, firstly you enter into vehicle settings menu and scroll through to TPMS and them press 'change wheel set'. After this has been completed you drive a few miles and then all the TPWS sensors are reset. This worked for me, no more warning signs! The problem with most modern cars is that are rammed with all kinds of electronic wizardry, and it is sometimes very difficult for a person of my age to fully understand it, particularly if there is a fault. On the positive side of this it was thanks to my TPWS which alerted me that my N/S/R tire had no pressure. I must say that I was very impressed with how the run flat tire got me home safely, not sure about injecting gooey stuff of foam in a non run-flat. I am prepared to sacrifice a slightly harsher ride/ road noise and have decided that I will stay with run-flat tires long term.

  46. As an about be be pensioner I am likely to be financially okay (luck and judgement got me mainly sorted), and I totally get that some pensioners need all the help they can get, and some will never need the fuel payment. IMHO the problem will be those that do not meet some benchmark and will have a be a little colder of hungrier each winter, and most MPs do not know what it is like to be hungry, homeless, frozen like too many people (not just pensioners) suffer from in the 7th largest economy in the world. On the new government I would suggest reading Why we get the wrong politicians. Even before reading this I always thought no new MP goes in with a view to being naff at their job. Whether Labour or Tory they want to do good but they get subsummed by the whipping strucuture in Commons and appeasement of the 'Ruler'. By the way having read books on the good and abd of the Nordics, Germany, Netherlands and a good few others, nowhere is perfect, but some are less broken than others. I would add I wished more people voted as democracy is a fragile thing hard fought for by the people over the centuries.

  47. The last 7 weeks have been a complete nightmare. Forensics we're finally done and I was allowed to collect my belongings from the pound, but wasn't allowed to see the car. Only thing they took was my dashcam. The car was moved on Monday just gone (22 April) to the repair place, and I was finally able to see my car. There is no damage, and wires have been pulled in the boot and carpets in front under the dash. She drives too which surprised me. So now I wait for a few scratches to be repaired, wiring put back, then I'll get my car back probably in about 2 weeks or so. Insurance sent my documents and keys back, reinstated insurance and I've re-taxed the car.

I am always amazed when i find a business who has no concept of the value of aftercare. They will stupidly nitpick their way out of all future business over relatively small issues. I know it may be contentious to say it, but why have Amazon basically taken over the world? In a word aftercare. Something wrong, in my experience, one online chat and it is sorted. Other businesses should take note.

  49. So the dreaded paint protection film - brilliant for protection - utterly disgusting in terms of aesthetics! As you can see from the attached thumbnails its gone slightly yellow, on a bright white car! Not only that, take a look at the tyre gunk surrounding the edges - it does NOT come off by routine washing! So I'd had enough of looking at this monstrosity and removed it! I thought long and hard about it at first. I dont like stonechips but the likelihood of one hitting that spot is close to 0! In fact, the car is 2 years old and out of all the light scratches I polished out today - none were anywhere near the PPF! Things you need: Hairdryer 2-3 minutes total A nice comfy bit of carpet to rest your knees on! - some 18" biceps And finally some tar and glue remover (Autosmart Tardis used here) OK so this seems pretty simple, heat the damn thing and just pull right?! Nope, it's not that easy, for reasons I'll explain later on...........trust me...... I tried it this way first and it took ages! So to begin with use the hairdryer and heat up one of the edges. Make sure you concentrate the heat on one just one edge and then use your fingernail to lift the sticky edge up. Now - put down the hairdryer and without heating ANYMORE of the paint protection film just pull. This PPF is designed by 3M who designed it to be removed without heating! Now the reason I said "DONT HEAT ALL OF IT" is because the glue becomes sticky, therefore sticking to the PAINT! That way, you have to remove ALL of the glue from the paint!! When just heating one edge, you only get glue residue on that single edge and thats all making the job much much easier! Lastly, the tiny bits of glue residue can be removed using tar and glue remover, in this case Autosmart Tardis - if you decide to heat the whole PPF, it'll take a lot of elbow grease - I tried it with one and it took 15 mins! With the other, I just heated one edge and pulled - it came of with barely any residue at all! So, I hope this helps some of you who have light coloured cars (especially WHITE!) and want to remove this poor excuse of "protection".

  50. Today i have come out to find 2nd attempt to steal my car while parked on the main road. This time i did not use battery kill switch but it seems they are targeting vehicles with Auto high beam light as my car doesn't have it and it will not unlock the car as per my researching. They left with no success but with the damages as you can see on the picture.
