Driving round the M25 yesterday morning at 05.30 (to avoid the usual friday traffic jam) I was passed at over 70 by an immaculate Silver Cloud III in beautiful two tone grey paintwork. Fast forward 50-years and the cars of today will just be static objects in museums, all the electronics will be dead with parts that are unobtainable.4 points

Sadly including that Rolls Royce that passed and that’s a what would now be a new £half million electronic wizz too but with a V12 6.75 ltr petrol engine …….. No brand new car’s going to last the course of time with the desperate need of developers and buyers to elektronikfie absolutely everything 🥵 BUT I wholeheartedly agree about the 1963’ish RR Silver Cloud 111 ……… my silly dream is/was to buy myself a 1965 Bentley S3 with power steering ……. earlier ones and the RR didn’t have that as standard …….( same car different badge ) ……. beautiful lines and styling Thinking to buy one these past few years BUT my Indy mechanic told me it would be on the Transporter down to him as much as I would ever use it ……. needing copious constant and very very expensive repair ……. telling me quite simply my Ls400 being a far more sensible car to own and run and with great reliability, longevity and comfort too So I bought myself my 2nd one just to make sure 😂 Malc I still hanker after that 1965 Bentley S3 😳3 points

My next door neighbour in Spain has a Bentley, also a Ferrari and in Spain he mainly uses his Mercedes - an ex Berlin Taxi with 400k km and still reliable. In his home he has just imported a Flistar (fully roadworthy for less than $2000 ) to go with his SmartCar. Note that registration - he has the full set from 1. Bentley and Ferrari are hardly used now. Flistar EV from Alibaba costs less than a Lexus wing mirror.2 points

The car uploads the info to the Lexus servers where the app obtains it's data. My app info is more or less the same as in the car.2 points

For info, my lexus dealer told me yesterday that the latest RZ (with the modifications announced by Lexus recently) is not expected before Nov 24 with delivery in the UK not before January/February 25 but it is apparently possible to pre-order this new version (the price is not known yet)2 points

Malcolm, I have not been able to establish that either. Car had been used regularly, mainly using electric for prior 3 months. Few days not used but mainly short distances. 2 days before, I took some friends up to Alicante, about a 4 hour run so mainly fuel. It was fully charged the day before in readiness for my transfer to the U.K. I also packed it full the day before so would have had doors open for a reasonable period, but everything was pre prepared and all bags pre packed. At 6am I pulled the car out of my garage, put final overnight bags in, my wife opened her door and got in. I closed the villa door, switched off all the house electrics and then tried to get into the car but it would not open. I now know flat battery. Frankly it could not have been more than 30 minutes after I pulled out. I did not have any audio on but it is possible that when my wife got in with her key, the aircon started up - but for a few minutes only. The car is booked in for annual service and the Newcastle manager has promised a full investigation and full battery check. His villa in Spain is not far from us and he is fluent in Spanish. He promised to personally telephone help if ever needed over there. Extremely helpful and a completely different experience from Carlisle. Has restored some of my faith in Lexus. Lexus U.K. are wanting the data history downloaded so that might turn something up.2 points

Well here she is Ellie. I brought her over a year ago but ill health and to many stays in hospital didnt give me the energy to do a write up on her, so here we go. 1999 Lexus LS400. Full service history 2 previous keepers. 75,000 mileage. Handling package. She is registered as red but I would say more maroon. New tyres all round and brakes. Cam belt renewed. LPG installed by Profess in south Wales. Lambs wool Rolls Royce carpets which were in my last LS400. What happened to my last LS? Sadly she had a bad case of tin worm in the rear inner wings which would have cost an arm and a leg to repair so a friend took her away repaired her and she is still on the road.1 point

Bill.. Of Course you want it Back Don,t let this Unfortunate Experience Cloud your Judgement Of The Car.. I think You Have Done something Inadvertantly that has Caused this drain on the Battery Albeit without you being aware of it..Bill ..These things Happen Even to the Best of Cars and No Matter how Reliable they are..My advice would be to get it fixed IE establish what caused the Drain and move on Because you have one AMAZING car Whatever you might Think at Present..Get yourself a Noco Boost Jump Battery keep it in the Glove Compartment and also a Device which gives you a daily read out of the 12v battery level..SORTED !!!! and forget about changing the car Biggest mistake you will ever Make in my opinion..!!!! Nigel, I'm sure you are right and having also previously owned an RX450h non-plug-in mild hybrid, it seems that the 450h+ PHEV, with an 18KWh battery and a smaller engine is considerably more economical. While driving in hybrid mode, I could see from the dashboard indicator that, on down hill driving, the traction battery was charging and would then go automatically into EV mode. The battery never got above 3 or 4 bars on the indicator which I guess is 20 or maybe 30% charged. I was expecting it to be inferior to the old RX for caravan towing with its 3.5 litre V6, but no such problems and it tows just fine. The figures I quoted are for solo driving of course, not towing. It's a very clever vehicle and is surprisingly economical. Tom1 point

You do have a valid point there, that the vehicle is hybrid and not a standard start-stop vehicle. What I also found is all other battery retailers, when you input your vehicle or registration to search, they all stated "go to dealer". If this one again dies within 2 years will defo go for a non-AGM. Below got the "quick" trickle charge setup in place. For anyone else interested there is a convenient access point that you can stow the connector end in. This way you dont have to take off the main trim door each time. Given the base of it is metal I also opted to line it with some plastic to avoid any risk of shorts although highly unlikely. Note that to get the red plastic positive terminal cover to clip back into place, you can cut two small channels to create a bendable tab that allows the eyelet cable to poke out. Given I went for a standard instead of indicator Ctek cable which does not come with an inline fuse as standard, opted to add my own per photo. I happened to have a glass fuse holder to hand so used that, but otherwise a car-fuse type holder is best (looks nicer).1 point

When I check the charge on the app, it's always an higher reading than what it shows in the car, by 2/3 miles. Why is that and where does the app gets the information from ?1 point

It looks like Yorkshire. Can't be Lancashire - not enough rough sleepers and McDonalds detritus. No cobbles and the church still has lead on its roof. Hmmm? I know! It's Edinburgh! My father is from Yorkshire but I was born in Lancashire, so maybe that's why nobody likes me in either place? Mulatto anyone or just a flat white or Latte?1 point

It can't come soon enough...I disturbed would be thieves just last night poking around the car on my driveway at 2:20am with a torch. They'd parked up, engine running,in a panel van. They scarpered as soon as they saw me. As I live at the end of a cul de sac, it wasn't opportunistic.1 point

Just to finish the story I got the car, it’s been great, it took 4 of us and camping equipment to Le Mans and back for about £130.00 in fuel. The seller took the old car in px so I got my £400. Back too. I noticed the mpg difference straight away and it’s got the acceleration I want when it’s needed. i checked the tailgate joints on inspection and checked under the seat for water ingress and it’s dry, thanks for the help on here, here to happy motoring.1 point

Well done Sir! An Excel calculated 62.2 on a return run to Royston was my best in Tiff. Think I managed slightly higher than that in Betsy but that was being slightly irresponsible by sitting right behind an HGV all the way from Cambridge to Peterborough up the A14.1 point

Thank you! Now in my U.K. home. The only thing that kept me sane was the support and help I received from members here and in ClubLexus. Could I give a very heartfelt thankyou to everyone who has contributed. It probably will be a few days before I am fully recovered and will post again with some suggestions and feelings about Lexus. It should be studied by anyone thinking about buying a new Lexus. While it has been felt a disaster, I must admit that the Lexus safety features, those that were working, are probably largely responsible for my being able to get home. However I would not wish this experience on anyone.1 point

Mike, well hello again ……., really good to see you back and in full throttle …….. your driveway looks as if it needs a few more Ls400s to accompany Ellie …….. wot a grand colour and the rather special steering wheel too Hope you’re managing to get out and about enjoying her ……. rather than just to and fro the hospital of which you’ve probably seen rather too much of late We’re getting fewer in numbers here with an Ls400 ……. a few of us with 2 and bought before these amazing increases in value were now seeing …….. Ellie looks in fine fettle and it’s good you’re retired one, dark green was it ? Is still in service somewhere Keep in touch, keep well and ENJOY Best wishes Malc1 point

Many have fitted mechanical immobilisers - because the Lexus security system is not fit for purpose. This will put off many thieves, and mean the number of thefts will decrease, which will slowly feed through to our insurance premiums. Sadly, this will not help the folk who have to renew in the next few months - all of which will take huge hits. Lexus has done too little to late - they did not even bother to warn us about the vulnerabilities.1 point

Yes - you need Techstream and a laptop for full coverage - but only runs on Windows. You should be able to get some diagnostics and live data with app 'Torque' but only covers engine data and you need a dongle to plug in to the OBD11 socket.1 point

Rewriting the canbus system is next to impossible from the little I understand. Steel canbus plates are a pathetic solution that could be got around in seconds with a bit of practice... or they'll just find another access point. If they are proposing a proper Thatcham fob-type immobiliser that isolates an ecu, fuel pump, brake pedal light or similar that's what I've got on my LC (plus an S5 Scorpion tracker amongst other things), and it's what I've been suggesting all along, provided installations cover a range of circuits and locations - it'd be pointless every Lexus having the same immobiliser relay in exactly the same place! They could still get into my car via canbus, but finding which circuit has been immobilised would take many minutes if not hours to locate and rewire. And it's taken, what, 4 months to come up with this 30 year old 'solution'?! They'd better not be suggesting we pay for it.1 point

Maybe if you held your coffee cup more steady they wouldn't have to keep wiping the floor?. BTW Are the roads less congested over there in foreign Yorkshire. Today I was in a traffic jam on the motorway for the entire journey. M61 M60 nightmare.1 point

Run canbus cables and protect connectors in steel armoured conduit. Make it so that it would take hours to get to the cables. They could rewrite software too. They just need some clever developers. Or we should point out to thieves to go after the cars on the deserted forecourts of dealerships, that will get them moving.1 point

It's a bit more than mere speculation. It's rock solid confirmation from someone at Lexus. There's no way any manufacturer these days will move away from canbus, it's in everything these days. Software fixes as I understand it, are not possible with the current ECU as they don't employ a separate security systems ecu, meaning that any software fix can (eventually with the right software hack) be hacked via the canbus system. The only solution, other than a complete redesign and implementation of a dual canbus with separate security ECU linked to start up, doors etc, is apparently to introduce a means of immobilisation separate to the main canbus, which makes perfect sense and will (hopefully) prevent theft. In effect, it's not hackable unless some form is access is possible via the OBD port but even then, the proprietary software should be designed and coded to avoid hack attacks. I don't see what else they can really do. That, the steel plates, a tracker and separate immobiliser are more than most vulnerable makes are provided with. Let's wait and see. For now, sensible steps include a steering wheel lock and to disable your wireless access so the key is needed. It takes seconds to do using the buttons on your key fob which are pressed in a certain order (see you tube for details).1 point

So much is technology dependent. EV have hurdles to jump to get anywhere near the targets the proponents of climate change are wishing for. Indeed, without question the govt in this country is guilty of setting targets that in all likelihood are certainly not achievable unless they bring tax payer money back into the fray. For example, the story this week that Vauxhall owners are threatening to dump UK EV production because of the aforementioned targets. Clear sign that manufacturers are sending govt a message to get realistic. That is of course just the UK. Large areas of the rest of the world remain totally dependent upon ICE for the foreseeable future if for no reason other than cost and infrastructure prevent any transition to EV. Indeed, I suspect we go down a table of Per Capita Head data and just draw a line under the first country where said data nullifies any prospect of EV in it's current state of development. Remember, we here will tend to see this issue through the prism of our own situation which is not really reflective of the world intoto. Somewhere in a distant future tech as likely progressed and resolves barriers to mass ownership and the volumes eventually swing pro EV driving down it's unit cost whilst pushing up the unit cost of diminishing ICE sales. In conclusion, our govt are already guilty of being too out of step in matching policy with tech development. That probably will not stop Labour from compounding that silliness, but 4 years is not long and that is about how long it will take for marginal voters to remember just how god awful they are. Then comes the unwind. We've been here before and before and before. plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.1 point

I had my UX250h for three and a half years - and only in that final year did I set up the app. I didn't get shown how to do it and if I've got to be honest, I found it more of a gimmick than anything of actual use for me! The dealer set it up on day one with my NX350h that replaced my UX, but lets just say...it's reliability is 'below average' at best. Indeed, it shows various doors unlocked at random times when they're not and the biggest one is the remote climate very rarely works. There's no pattern to it. The home screen which shows the car, the milage and fuel level is about the only part of it which appears to be reliable!1 point

Same as above, but you adjust the bar on the left side of the column rather than the bar underneath. Getting the lower cover off is a bit of a faff but once you know how it's doable. This one I found useful but there are plenty of other videos out there.1 point

The headlight self leveling mechanism is built into the body of the headlight and takes its instructions from the self levelling actuator mounted to the chassis which is connected to the suspension via a short arm check if that arm is intact and also the actuator movement. It is possible to check it by jacking up the front of the car and starting the engine with the headlights on .1 point
