  2. I have up to now decided not to comment, because it is to easy to fall into a pro/anti stance and get stuck. So the post above shows how a real debate could go if that was allowed to happen I am not anti BEV, I would likely buy one now if the prices were more realistic, but, there is a but: it would be a second car, charged at home and only used for local trips (no more than 50 Miles). In fact it would replace my Starlet, which I use for that purpose. It would not however, be any use for me on my regular trips to and from Norfolk, for that I would wish to stick to ICE. That I think for most town/city folks who can home charge, would be a good solution. Pollution in towns/city would be greatly reduced, however, it assumes everyone who could home charge would be able to afford two cars, not likely I feel. Other drivers who truly fit into the small mileage users often quoted to support BEV could be catered for if the Government would get their act together re public charging points (as pointed out by many other users). However, I do still feel this is aimed at mainly those living town environments. So to finish, I feel we need a hybrid solution, that allows those that can to make a switch to BEV and those who needs are different stick with ICE. Build a proper public charging network, bring the price of BEV down, and stop making it anti/pro one or the other and many would I feel make the change. Pollution would then be greatly reduced, if that really is the problem? What is stopping this? The failure today to allow any real debate of an issue, thus seeking actual solutions that would work. A Government that panders to pressure groups to keep them quiet, but making ill thought through decisions and then making no effort to any make them work. Allowing the collection of taxes in every form to become the focus, rather than the solution of the problem (if it exists).

  3. Funnily enough Maurice, I actually fall into the category you are describing. So, I am in the strange position of having a gas-guzzling petrol car (my Kia Stinger) and a EV (My wife's Kia Niro EV). We have had the Niro for 2 months and have managed almost 1500 miles in it now. Due to my commute to work being only 6 miles daily and my wife working from home, the Niro is my everyday transport. It is also the main car we use when we go out together around the local area. And you know what? I am loving driving the Niro! I didn't think I would, but it is just so effortless and smooth, as well as comfortable, that it really is a stress free environment to be in. I love the linear power delivery and no gears, the instant response and the lack of vibrations/harshness. In that time, we have taken it on slightly longer trips (150 miles +) in addition to pottering around town and it has done equally well. Very comfy on the motorway. We have also managed all this without visiting any chargers and only charging it at home overnight, where we get cheap electricity from Octopus Go (12p per kWh). This equates to roughly £7.80 for a full 'tank' that is getting us roughly 250ish miles. Does this mean that I recommend EV's for everyone? Most certainly not! For us, it is strictly because we have 2 cars and I would always have a non-EV as one of them. Also, having off street parking is a must as far as I am concerned. In conclusion, I feel EV's have their place on the roads, but aren't the one-size-fits-all solutions that some people think it is.

We are similar - two cars - one for my work / long journeys (IS 300h) and a Toyota Yaris hybrid that my wife mainly uses for short journeys - we could change the Yaris for electric (and charge at home) if the price of EVs drops to similar price as ICE / hybrid but for the foreseeable future would need the IS or similar for my work and long journeys.

  6. Commenting on Mr Vlad's post, "As for ice cars polluting cities. Poppycock. The percentage of pollution caused by cars is miniscule compared to what the buildings in the cities produce.", I would agree up to a point. Modern petrol cars are very clean and pollution from homes and business is significantly greater but I remember a news item a while back showing a mum pushing her daughter, in her pushchair, along a busy London street and you could physically see the exhaust fumes washing over the child's face. Made me feel very sad and sick for the little girl. Of course, I know that the most harmful pollution was coming from HGVs and diesel vehicles in general, and not from today's petrol engines, but it did confirm in my mind that something needed to be done to protect people. Encouragement should be the key: for example, free parking, parking that comes with charging points - thousands of them, etc. Let the people use their judgement and do what many have done, BEV for the cities, petrol for the long journeys, towing and non-HGV deliveries. Government should spend massively on researching solutions and creating appropriate infrastructure before introducing legislation. Response is always better and swifter with the carrot than the stick. Just my opinion.

  7. I think that's a model that would suit many, small electric city car for commuting etc, ICE for longer journeys. For those that only need / want one car a plug in hybrid would be a better option than BEV.

  8. Thrilled and relieved on Sunday on my return from Spain for 2 months when my NX 300 h started first time . I was resigned to it being flat and probably in need of new battery. So pleased 😀

  9. Just popped into my Lexus dealership who are fully aware of the fuel flap not opening issue. In fact, the NX on display in the showroom has even got the cover removed in the boot to show existing customers how to open the fuel flap. They said that a fix is being looked at. They are also aware of the door handle issue.

  11. I would think that there is more to it than that if it's actually dripping onto the dash. With this thread in mind I made a point of checking mine over the last few days, while it's been cold and frosty, and have had no condensation inside. You might want to check your cabin filter just in case, it's only a 2 minute job. Also worth lifting all the mats to see if the carpets are damp, as well as checking all the boot storage areas, as there must be moisture somewhere in the car if there's that much condensation. A light coating is understandable, but it shouldn't be to the extent that it's dripping.

  12. I checked ALA yesterday - they do seem to be the cheapest. In case people use them, I got a quote and then left the site - they mailed me a 5% off voucher. I then took another look and left the site again and they mailed me a 10% off voucher. Brings the 3 year total loss gap insurance for my lease car down to just over £100.

  13. This is my one little annoyance at the moment. Happens once every few weeks or so and I do the same as Andy and it goes away. Figured it could be related to poor mobile reception around home causing the car not to be able to connect back to Lexus via its own connection, similar to how the remote heating schedule can occasionally fail. December update didn't fix it either. Definitely not related to your mobile connection or WiFi so don't waste your time with that.

  14. Happy New Year to all members. Firstly due to leak at the RHS in my 430/2000 model boot my Toyota Denso parking sensor control unit has died.It apparently was fitted to 4 Toyota cars models but the part is no longer available (part no188100-2260).There is one available on eBay but doesn’t look in good condition.Has any member any contacts where I may obtain a used or new original reversing sensor control unit? Regarding the water leak on both lower sections to the boot (under those bucket like containers) I watched a Utube video how to remove the rear light clusters and then cleaned out the Chanel’s behind so I am now waiting for the usual Lake District weather to arrive to test my efforts! I have also removed the rubber grommets in these lower sections so that any further ingress can freely drain away.Any further helpful suggestions welcome. I thought I had solved water ingress in the drivers footwell but sadly not.I am going to remove the window wipers and plastic drain grill underneath and investigate further.Again any helpful suggestions appreciated. I am slowly but surely getting the car back to where it needs to be and have had a new cam-belt kit fitted including water pump,upper front ns/ball joint,next on the list will be the exhaust system that members recommended using the specialist in Leeds. My wife is fed up with me talking about the Lexus but actually we both love it,it was to be my Sunday car but I want to use it all the time! Thanks for all your supportive and helpful comments at the back end of 2022.

Hi all, Sorry for reviewing a 2 year old post but i just stumbled onto this topic today and wanted to update on the cars status.I have purchased the car from that dealer in 2021, shes still running strong and being used as a daily 🙂, small issues (had to attend one recall) but i'm working on getting her perfect! P.s. Jon's B exhaust is still present on the car! Sounds superb. Cheers Goti

  18. It’s been -2 for the last couple of mornings. Car has been well frosted outside but small amount of condensation inside. Set climate controls to Auto then pressed windscreen defrost button, it then turns Auto off and blasts air to screen. Cleared window pretty quickly with no dripping condensation. Pressed windscreen button off and system resumed in Auto with a/c selected. This method worked well for me. I has a RX400h a few years ago which leaked loads of water. I did cure leaks but they came back again about 3 years later. I sold it and said I’d never buy another Lexus. However after a couple of other vehicles I did buy a RX450h against my better judgement. I don’t have any water ingress at present but if they appear in the future I will sell car and never buy another Lexus, ever. It’s ludicrous in this day and age that manufacturers can’t produce a durable watertight car.

  19. That button Ant is the cabin filter cleaner. It's not the AC button. The AC button is on the satnav screen. When was the cabin filter last changed? Mine gets changed on its major service one every 2 years. Maybe yours is in need of changing.

  20. Perfectly said Shapor. You are in an innenviable position in having a drive and a charger and on a good electricity supply and cost. And yes you've been on a longish trip within the range of your Niro and that's great. Just what I said earlier. That Wyoming thing banning sales of EV'S. There's something not quite right there. More will come to light In the next few days. So it's being said that the cost of electricity is coming down soon. By how much we'll have to wait and see. It may mean that there will be a switch in that a long distance trip may be cheaper in an EV as opposed to a car. But that cost reduction. Is that to apply to domestic usage only or to those companies running the super chargers etc at a rip off price aswell?

  22. Yes, mine was connected to the OBD 11 point under the dashboard. Others connect directly to the Battery which I did not want to do. It is important to ensure that the Solar Panel itself is facing South so as to maximise its use of the available daylight. Look to see if there is ayn help on Youtube.

  23. Graham. Have you tried a breakers? There are a couple around - this one appears to deal mostly Lexus… https://lexusbreakers.co.uk/ I’m interested in how to turn the volume down on my sensors’ beeps. It’s far louder than necessary and more than a little annoying.

  26. Brief update: I've had no more problems with the car, and despite not being used during December it started up fine after a few weeks of cold weather. I checked the battery first, and it appeared to have retained full charge since the previous journey. So it feels like it's fixed, and that the problem was the earthing. But I've got used to checking the charge before using the car. A good sign is that when I go in the garage I can see the red security light flashing on the dashboard - which means there's still some juice. I have a motorway trip coming up, which will give the battery a good charge-up.

  27. I'm with Aviva and have been for quite a few years. Around 3 years there was a gang of bikers hi-jacking cars in the neighbourhood and I got picked on, I finished up in hospital after putting up a fight (stupid thing to do when you're in your late 60s and could have got stabbed) they trashed the car and Aviva wrote it off. As I had good CCTV footage Aviva were excellent in paying the claim and were a pleasure to deal with. They remain to be the cheapest I can find for the ES.

  28. Same for me. I used to drive SAAB 9000's with their wrap up and over doors. Wash, wipe whole car, door frames and door jams. I consider, everything before the rubber seals is outside the vehicle and needs washing/waxing. Anything after is inside the vehicle and needs valeting. Simple really, I don't understand the problem. Also, as a Luxury Lexus owner I just have my man take care of that sort of physical work. I don't even know what petroleum product goes into the car or where. And as for this hydroid elastic-trickery that's pure magic!

  29. I have experienced this on 3 occasions in the last few days of icy weather. I have now had 6 Lexus models over 12 years and this is the first time I have encountered a problem. It is quite annoying when away from home as there is no access to 'warm' water to free it up and in this day and age why should it be necessary to warm the lock. I presume the NX450h is not sold in Canada or the northern states of the USA as I am sure their temperatures put the UK in the shade. Has anyone got a fix from a dealer yet? If not I will be reporting to my dealer and will report back

Most likely the case, but if it's going to save you X amount on import duty/tax why not have a shot at it 😁 From an ergonomic standpoint it's bad to use the touch screen, especially if you're sitting quite far back. However I bought it mainly for the Androud Auto capability + larger screen. So almost everything will be done via the phone at startup and then using the screen on a ad-hoc basis

  31. I’m still trying to understand why a bit of dirt/mud on the bottom of doors before the seal requires the interior of the car to be cleaned🤔. I always regarded the doors as part of the bodywork so I just wipe over the particular area of the subject matter whilst washing the car along with the bottom of the doors, which is surely a necessity on all cars. Do people really wash cars with the doors closed and ignore the door bottoms which are in the shut line of the car? Even the car wash gangs, on the rare occasion that I’ve used them, open the doors & wipe the bottoms.

  32. Well I love driving it. 26 years old, drives like new, never let me down, bullet proof car, even has the made in Japan sticker on the window. Does it show its age, of course, but no rust issues, has to use E5 but that is okay. No electric windows or any such issues to go wrong, the only extra seemed to be a heated rear window. As the saying goes - does what it says on the tin. Wish they made cars to such standards today.

  34. Lexus called yesterday to confirm my service appointment and I asked about the recall. It won't happen until I get a letter telling me to bring the car in for the recall (as expected) they need to get the parts in then book the cars for the recall work, could be a while yet before that happens.

  35. How about this then. EVs for those in towns and cities who don't venture far? ICEs for the rest of us. Trust me, there's plenty of wealthy types in and around London whos cars barely make it out of their own borough let alone the M25 zone! EVs work for them. I'm happy to accept the days of me purring around in a V6 are going to be over sooner than I think. A quick glance at the autotrader reveals petrol cars are now sticking out 220+ hp from a puny sounding 1.4. So we've now got to the stage where a 2 litre is now a BIG engine. If that's what it takes to keep the zealots at bay then so be it.

  36. I'm another who has gone from an RX450h to an NX450h, and no regrets for me. Lexus is my brand of choice and when I needed something family oriented a couple of years back the RX was the only option as I did not like the old NX interior at all, and wasn't that keen on the exterior either. Came from an RC so didn't enjoy driving the RX anywhere near as much, and wasn't keen on the body roll, but couldn't really fault it otherwise (was used to the old infotainment system). Definitely didn't need something as big though, and so was very interested in the new NX, and specifically the 450h as majority of my driving is local and so fits the profile for a plugin hybrid. The NX has brought the driving enjoyment back for me and with a little over 2k on the clock now, I seem to be averaging about 1k miles per tank. I'm loving the new tech which has been a long time coming for Lexus.

  38. Hi Jeff. We sold our villa in Andalusia in August which meant I no longer had need for the 20 year old 260,000 mile Merc. I gifted that to the local Indy who had looked after it for me for the past 10 years and he will probably use it as a Courtesy Car. The GS 450h, I still have and will probably advertise it on this Forum once I have been able to take some suitable photos. It is a July 2010 Reg`n,FLSH and one previous ownwer and 67,000 miles.It is probably too fast for me now as I approach 77 and it is getting more difficult for Mrs Roy and me to get in and out of. It can still be warranted until 2025. The most suitable replacement we found was the NX from Lexus Liverpool with 3years old and 13,000 miles on the clock. I did look around Lexus Chester but they only had a very limited stock at the time. We find the NX to be easier to get in and out of. It sits higher off the ground and is well equipped. Best wishes.

  39. Just a note, I was doing some research on the 10.25 screen and found two sources who have quoted reliability issues. The first (and probably more reliable) is BeatSonic from the US (see the 4th comment on their video 2013-2016 LEXUS IS Apple CarPlay Android Auto Install / Demo - YouTube) who stated they arent offering it due to reliability issues. The second is this chap who posted on his own install video (2015 Lexus IS 10.25 Android Head Unit Upgrade Installation - YouTube) - see top comment and who said the unit stopped working within a year. Another poster also relays his experience of reviews with similar findings too. Just thought I would mention it.

  41. I read the same too and considered 4 companies (in Aug 22). Motor Easy and Gap Insurance both asked too many questions when trying to get an online quote so I didn't go any further. Direct Gap wanted £399 and Ala £395, both for 4 years cover. I went with Ala, not for the £4 saving but because they had more positive customer service reviews.

  42. you can generally get all types of insurance cheeper through a third party than the main dealers (Gap, tyre, wheel, small dents and scratches ) but my advice would to be read and compare the small print,

  43. It's not the manufacturers fault, it's the regulators. WLTP doesn't produce results that are real world realistic for BEVs but it is what they have to publish. Heating and AC are the big ones. Using heated seats rather than full cabin heating drastically reduced battery consumption. Lights use very little, estimated to be around 0.5 mile range lost per hour of usage. Audio system would be almost too small to measure - a tiny amount unless you have fitted a high end aftermarket system and run it at full volume all the time.

I have found that at most times of the year if I reverse out of my Driveway, stop the Car whilst putting the chain across that if I put the Car back into Park even with the handbrake on, that upon putting the Car into Drive I get a rather unpleasant clunk. I therefore have for several years after stopping to put the Chain across,with the Handrake depressed, I put the Car into Neutral and upon selecting Drive I have no noise, release HandBrake and go. This I figure is to down to cold Trannie Oil. Once the oil has warmed up - no problem with selecting Drive from Park after reversing or whatever. ps How many Films of American Cars have I seen where the driver gets out and the Car lurches forward! Common practice there not to use the Hand/Foot Hand brake it would seem.

  45. Yes and the condition of the handbrake mechanism, they can stop working properly due to lack of use as well. I had an Audi A4 and the handbrake froze solid during a -5 cold snap because the cables had let in moisture/water. The handbrake cable sheathing ends/seals were knackered on the end which allowed the moisture/water in. If the cables had been in good condition I don’t think they would have frozen solid.

  46. Good advice in the video. Several here in the forum think that putting transmission in park is enough to keep the car as long as not in hills, but this is not correct. This video show the little thing that help holding the car in park. Here Lexus automatic change oil in transmission when around 80K km (calling it 90K service for whichever reason). No lubricant last forever, no matter who say so.

I'm fearing there's going to be on-going potential unknowing electrical gremlins as our cars get older I experienced lots of weird gremlins which i reported here on last year or so ............. we've got quite ancient cars and must now expect these little challenges I'm afraid Others don't suffer as we do ..... their cars just don't exist at the age of ours ...... theirs' have long gone to the scrappy 😂 Malc

  48. When you have the problem do you check the voltage of the battery? I agree with Maurice above that your work on the terminals should be the first thing to be checked. However, I've been caught out in the past by coincidence. As you have charged the battery it would be good to eliminate a parasitic drain. I've recently found a quick easy way to check, is by measuring the voltage across fuses. Parasitic Draw Diagnosis: Tips for Best Approach | Auto Service Professional There are voltage drop charts available online. In the past I've used the multimeter in series with the negative lead but this has led to blown internal fuses and disrupts power to the car. This method I've found to be a lot quicker and easier.

  49. I also spotted the vettes, there is also a Honda 250N Superdream ..I bought one once for £80.00 and that included a new rear tyre and now look at the price!
