  1. Well just over two years ago I made the "mistake" of having a look around the showroom of Lexus Teesside while my 2011 RX was in for a service and MOT. I saw a 2017 RX while there .. had a look .. ended up buying it. After retiring at the end of June I thought I would consider when to change again and went to Lexus Teesside again today to enquire about when the list prices of the new models would be out. Mentioned that the thought of the V6 being dropped was putting me off the 2023 ones. Sat in their showroom was a brand new (unregistered) RX450h Premium Sport in Dark Blue with cream seats, HUD, Panoramic Sunroof ... looked gorgeous, especially in that colour. It was tempting ... very tempting ... too tempting ... Yes.. I bought it .. picking it up on Tuesday .. they are going to remove the dashcams from the 2017 and install them in the new one on Tuesday.

  2. Most of the issues are concerning batttery and charging technology. Issues that will no doubt be resolved in time. In the late 1980's the finance director of a large multinational told me that he could see no point in his company's future that they would ever use mobile phones. In 1946 Daryl Zanuck, of Fox, said "Television won't be able to hang on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night." And in 1977 Ken Olson, the founder of Digital Equipment Corporation said there was no reason anyone would want a computer in their home. If internet forums existed in those times then many Luddites would have been agreeing and cheering them on. If history tells us anything though, it's that things change, and that current perceptions become quickly outdated, as innovation rapidly transforms the landscape. There are valid reasons to question the benefits of today's EV's, but few reasons to think that situation won't dramatically change in time. Today my preference is largely towards ICE and hybrids but, when 500-1000 mile range, and fast charging becomes the norm, then my preference will likely change.

  3. I must admit that worried me, too, but I kept it for 7 years and really enjoyed it. Fabulous looks and performance in a comfortable package—what's not to like! Oh, yes—fuel consumption was a bit fierce, but that's surely to be expected in a 5 litre V8, and it gave me a taste for another V8—hence the SC430.

  4. and why not, you enjoy one of the best SUV's money can buy. When you stop smiling enough to take some photos please let us see the beast. Sadly I'm not a fan of SUV's and Lexus offer little else lately so am migrating to Toyota. Pick up a 2021 Corolla estate later next week.

  5. https://www.carboncounter.com/#!/explore Have some maths based fun with this interactive cost and CO2 counter comparing ICE, hybrid, PHEV and electric from our friends at MIT. Admittedly these are US numbers for new car costs, but the CO2 numbers are brilliant fun to see over the length of a vehicle lifetime and how long you own it. There's also plenty to tweak from fuel costs, to how polluting the electric mix is...etc. I compared our ES300h (the second most efficient car I've owned) to a Tesla model 3 (one of the most efficient electrics out there). It will take about 7 years of ownership and driving at 13k miles per year for the lifetime CO2 emission to be equal! Anything less than that the upfront CO2 bill for making the Tesla outweighs the benefits. Compare it to a Toyota Pruis prime and it will take 16 years! As for costs, that's a bit trickier. I only tweaked fuel and electric price. Ownership costs at US new car prices were the same, again at about the 7 year mark! Mind you Teslas cost a heck of a lot less in the US than they do here and our ES300h cost about the same as it did in the US taking into account the GBP/USD conversion rate at the time I bought it (it's even cheaper now). Remember I'm comparing to a luxury hybrid car. The civics and the like, wipe the floor with most electrics cost wise over the lifetime of a vehicle.

  7. Hi guys I think a common and important theme here is keeping busy and the mind active. As a semi retired psychy nurse who spent many years assessing patients with dementia this is paramount. You guys make me feel a youngster which is great, especially as I have, over the last two months been to the funerals of two school friends who were both younger than me. I work one day a week as a psychy nurse and keep current, I am involved with several groups in our village and on the committee of most of them. Of course I have Lexiguy Junior who is 11, SC430 mad and has just started high school this year. 👇 ....then there is Gina, who I lavish my attention (and money) on daily. 👇 I never seem to stop sometimes and hope I am not doing too much and one day I will drop off my perch! It is such a pleasure to meet such a great group of guys, drawn together by our passion for SC430's. I sincerely hope we all can get together for the weekend at the annual SC430 meet next July in Coventry. For those who didn't make it this year: There is also some excellent footage of the meeting from Dr Will who is the proud owner of one of the bright red ones! Have a great weekend, Anthony

  8. I nearly bought a 928 or a Lotus Esprit 20 years ago but bought a TVR instead. I loved the Porsche 928 but it was was so technically advanced it worried me that something could go wrong at great expense. From memory it even had electrically controlled vents behind the radiator and 20 years ago a new engine was £14,000. The TVR was rubbish I spend more time repairing it than driving it and it took me a year to sell it. 20 years later the TVR has never appreciated in value whereas 928s have. I think the moral is don’t buy what basically is a British kit car. I also fancied a 993 Turbo too but they were always way out of my league and now worth £250,000.

  9. I think the fixed price servicing comes with a clause about unforeseen issues. They probably wouldn’t charge you for the plug change if they didn’t do it but they aren’t going to risk stripping a thread and cover the cost of fixing the heads within the price of a service. I don’t recall anyone having this issue of a garage not being able to remove plugs - it isn’t a common issue. I’d recommend you speak with Lexus customer relations, given you have a vehicle that has been correctly maintained by Lexus dealers, and ask how they can resolve this issue for you.

  12. I assume the plugs were changed at 60k miles? In the US the interval for these plugs is 100k miles so they should be good until you get to 160k miles and will probably go on for 200k+ so it probably isn't worth trying to get them out and risk stripping the threads on the heads. I don't understand why they are so stuck though - if they were fake plugs without the correct coating then I could understand it but not genuine denso plugs. There is very little room in the plug tubes, I doubt one would fit.

  13. Been told what the registration number is going to be.. the salesman (David) had asked if it could be something relevant. It has ended up as my initials as the last two letters.. pity it was not an NX I was buying instead of an RX as the first two letters are NX.

  16. Hi, I have changed gearbox oil in my RCF at 60k miles (just drain and refill so about 25% was really changed). The same will be done in my is250 at 60k probably next month. I change oil in every auto I have had at 60k/90k/120k etc My “lesson” was taken 15 years ago when using Audi A4 b6 3.0 with multitronic 🥴 I would not bother too much about filter itself because it will be clogged only when gearbox is nearly dead so oil/filter change will not cure it anyway. That’s my point of view.

  17. Hi Vladimir Exactly this , relaxing!! Don't get me wrong I absolutely loved my Type R but I got to a stage whereby I wanted a comfortable, luxurious drive rather and an aggressive one. I'd get out of the Honda all tense with the stiff due to the drive and the sound of V-Tech! I really enjoyed my time with the car but I felt it was the right time to tone it down a little (in a really nice way) I also work shifts so getting up at 3am in the morning to get to work and driving the Type R isn't the most satisfying experience and also coming home at around 11:30pm The Lexus for me at this point in time is the perfect car for me and my family and i'm really glad I made this choice.

  21. EVs are a scam, nothing more than garbage to fulfil the needs for the controlling World Economic Forum, using net zero drivel to drive the panic and scaremongering amongst people, all the climate change protestors are all unemployed lunatics and buying into what trash experts are saying If the mad plans every come to fruition the planet won’t even be able to sustain the batteries needed for EVs in 2040 as the natural resources will be depleted, Confirmation by experts not funded by third parties I will stick to reliable large cylinder NA petrol cars than will last forever and plough through miles with consummate ease and can poddle along at 80mph just ticking over and they can tow a variety of attachments also. I can’t afford a tank of diesel so let’s get an EV for £60k, sounds a great idea

  22. Induction heating is a great idea ... but what garage has that. I agree the design is poor and the servicing scheme that leaves the plugs in until they are stuck seem short sighted. A no no car... no because I've had 10 good years motoring but seems crazy to give up a scrap a great car because the spark plug(s) are stuck! John

  23. VERDICT: It worked! I can confirm it has completely removed the anti-glare coating (no more purple tint) but it doesn't seem to affect anything. A few minor scratches remain which I'll remove when I spend more time on it, however this result was achieved in just 5-10 minutes and there is a huge improvement. A couple of things to note if you're going to try it yourself: - I used masking tape around the edges of the screen to prevent it getting on the rest of the unit. - I only used a small amount of liquid at a time (pea sized amount on a microfibre cloth, moving in all directions). - I avoided rubbing the white text above the buttons as I wasn't sure if it would remove them (it probably wouldn't, but better safe than sorry). Thanks everyone for your help and advice 👍

  24. Just to add to Andrew's suggestion I've had excellent results with this https://htsupplies.co.uk/products/innotec-deblock-ice-aerosol Never tried it on spark plugs but I have no reason to think it would be any less effective.

  25. welcome to the Forum John incredible that the Main Dealer service dept is so bloody useless ........... can you name and shame ? Andrew Mr Spock gives a simple and sensible first step ...... lots of it and for a few days too and then hopefully you've done all that any proper credible servicing guy would have done I have no idea beyond Andrew's common sense approach ...... Lexus Main Dealer must surely have someone competent to advise ............. competently Best wishes Malc

  26. is there a good and valid reason why petrol, diesel, fuel cars and coal power stations can't be clean emission usage ? Surely it only needs good technology and research to develop sensible filtration of the emissions to negate baddies into the environment Surely we're a long way towards it already with catalytics stuff and washing power station emissions already Couldn't it be a factor of a tiny tiny % of the current spend on EV technologies to get to grips with fossil fuels ... which we all love and adore with our V8s Surely the UK Europe is just blindly going along with Musky'ites endeavour ................ it would help, the rest of the world and humanity hugely to improve the Climate Change factors if the rest of the world's emissions, the vast bulk of it all no doubt , could be properly cleaned -up Why can't we encourage the improved " clean-up " of existing technologies ? Malc Short answers on a postcard or two please

  30. I do not know. I just read the news and listen to news on Danish TV. Here where we live price has tripled since the problems with the stupid dictator that seems to think he can rule the world because the UN security has the possibility for some countries to veto what they do not like. Not one country should have the right to veto. Not one country is not committing grave errors of judgement if it is in their own interest.

  34. Nice one! Sounds like a very attractive colour/trim combination. Although I'd love to try a Gen 4 RX one day, for the moment I'd rather not because I know it would spoil my current Gen 3 which I want to keep for a few years yet, but I fear I'd end up getting tempted like you. I did recently try an NX450h+, which I thought would be a natural step on from my RX in a few years' time (when I won't need so much space), but I think I'd miss the V6. P.S. Look after yours, could be just what I want one day......

  35. Hi Paul Hope to see your pics soon, my wheels are in appalling condition due the supplier having them painted when I bought it and subsequently paint flaked from the undercoat in lumps! Can I ask if you had anything done with the trims and centres because mine are scratched around the lug nuts, what colour (original silver) and how much did they cost? Regards, Anthony

  40. My thanks to all of you for your kind and supportive comments. I realise I must seem a bit odd to all you youngsters—87 and still driving in a sports car, at that! I've begun to find people raising their eyebrows when they find out I'm that ancient, but—like all of you, I suspect—I still feel I'm the same person inside this old frame. While I still have my marbles, I don't intend to stop doing what I can to enjoy life. I reckon I'm still a reasonably capable driver, with quick reactions and eyesight recently refurbished (new cataracts, no need for glasses). Only one significant difference—I don't feel the need to drive constantly at (or over) the speed limit, which was a feature of my 15 years of Porsche ownership (I had three of them, including a 928 and a 993 Targa). I need a walking stick and don't walk very far, but I can still cope with everything except cooking, which I hate! Sorry for banging on—garrulous old men do that kind of thing, I'm afraid!

  41. Hi John. Yes the issues were mainly with the 2006/2007 models. There are 6 battery failures and 2 transmission pump failures in just this one thread, and there are others: We know Richard @ hybrid battery solutions because of GS450h battery failures. He has fixed several for members here, and several people have also fixed transmission issues here by replacing the bearings. Both failures would mean scrapping the vehicle if the owner took it to Lexus to get it repaired as they won't 'fix' the issue just swap out the sub-assembly for thousands of pounds. The hybrid failures of the GS reported on LOC total more than all the other Lexus hybrids combined. It still isn't a high number but isn't 'Lexus' reliable. The RX400h for example sold 6 times the number of GS450h yet failures are less than half and only really a result of an external issue (water ingress) that is starting to occur because of the vehicle's age. The 400h did suffer an inverter issue but that was dealt with under a recall FOC. 2008 models, there was a slight revision to the battery pack and they seem more reliable but didn't sell as many so less of a data sample to draw a full conclusion. 2009 onwards with the larger boot capacity and revised battery pack/electronics seem reliable.

  45. I’m with EON, and they’re adding £66 to my account balance with them each month for six months. Seems reasonable. Agree about switching. I used to use the comparison sites regularly, and did make some savings but not really significant. The work needed to go through the switch each time was a pain too - better with some suppliers than others. I’ve been with PFP, Ovo, Bulb, Scottish Power, NPower and Octopus over the years. The only one that really was hopeless was Scottish Power. The rest were all pretty good customer service wise. Luckily, when I moved into my current house last August - which was already serviced by EON - they offered me an 18 month fixed price which was as good as anything else out there. That expires in March 2023. To be fair, EON also seem fine.

  47. Hello and nice car! This is one of my favourite colours although I ended up getting a white one. It's not a sports car 😛 but I know what you mean, your first performance car? I've had mine for just over a year and it's my second performance car, but my first RWD car with more than ~200 bhp (a lot more!). Cruise control does show your target speed to the left of the speedo, I think? If you have radar cruise control you only get 5mph increments for some reason. I use it sometimes, but it can be a bit frustrating around traffic. If you want to keep the car in tip-top condition there are a few things that are generally seen as a good idea to get done more frequently than Lexus suggest, like the transmission fluid, coolant, more frequent oil changes. I'd recommend running it exclusively on super unleaded petrol as well (98 RON or above) to help ensure you're getting the full power and torque. Enjoy it and don't be shy with the car, drive it hard, it can take it!
