I paid £7500 for my 09 SEL with 52000 on , 2 years ago. Autotrader valued it at £6800 last week so £700 depreciation in 2 years. I can live with that.3 points

...had mine a year...zero issues...genuinely lovely drive...thirsty around town but the reliability and related minimal maintenance costs makes up for the thirst...wouldn't touch another marque of car at this age...just not worth the hassle... ...paid £4k...45k miles...immaculate...full lexus history...got lucky I guess...3 points

Depends on what you are looking for. IS250 is surprisingly modern car, reliable, good fuel economy, actually nice to drive, very very well equipped (especially SEL). In 2019 I was trying to replace IS250 and I was struggling, many 10 years newer cars were not equipped as well and felt actually poorer inside. For example heated/cooled seats are extremely rare option on many cars, in Lexus that is standard. After a while I got Lexus RC and I after some time IS250 looked dated to me... depends how you look at it. The infotainment in IS250 and Lexus in general was kind of old always fashioned, so that will feel as older part, but all the rest is very modern. Even from outside they look kind of classy and being relatively uncommon, many people do not realise they are 15 years old cars. Now the price is the issue, but it is an issue with all the cars nowadays. When I got my last IS250 in 2014, it was 2008 car with 122 k miles on it and I paid £4000. That was 6 years old car back then. Now even newest IS250s are over 10 years old, but they cost £8k+ so market has changed significantly for all cars... So in short, if you just need reliable and comfortable car and you don't care about latest technology in it, then I think IS250 is still very good value option.3 points

Could be the ABS kicking in. It should be disabled below 5Mph though. If the pedal pushes back at you, then it is almost certainly the ABS kicking in. You may need to check the ABS sensors on all of the wheels.2 points

Well, I decided to go for the ones that Phil linked to from 4x4 Styling. I ordered late on Sunday night and they arrived this afternoon, so I've just got to wait for my mate to fit them for me now. I'll let you know how it goes.2 points

I remember cars in the 60's and 70's. You were very lucky to have and exhaust last longer than 3 years!2 points

The auto-dip function for those of us in the lower spec cars works pretty well.1 point

Well the car went in to the dealer today and I am very happy to advise a repair price consisting of the mirror shell, colour coded lower portion and the chrome strip all replaced for £219 inclusive labour. Quite remarkable and truly superb service from start to finish. Must say, I continue to be very pleased with Lexus Gatwick and feel well looked after by their friendly, attentive staff. Obviously, I regard this as an excellent outcome!1 point

Well it’s not the head gasket, tests have proved that’s still good. the water pump was replaced about 50k ago and is still dry do it’s a bit of a mystery as to why there was coolant loss. we’ve put the lower fuel consumption down to the colder weather and E10 as well as changing the wheel size to 17’s. Now that’s it’s warmed up a bit the mpg has gone back to mid 40’s1 point

No more than the Scrotes who go nicking them with a cloning device 🙄1 point

+1 on above! oil at normal operating temp will run at well above 100’C so yes, could be coolant temp that is being monitored. But, and a big BUT is OP mentioned a temp of 120’ !!!! If it was coolant system being watched ( note coolant and Not water) it will go above 100’C quite easily ( in a pressurised system) but 120’C is not what you want to see😳1 point

Sadly not. It makes a 60 second job into perhaps a 180 second job, but three minutes is all they'll need. They don't care how much damage they do in the process and there's always a 'look out' man with a machete or some such weapon so no one is going to (or should) tackle them themselves. They'll still be well gone before any police appear. I would have gone for one of these cats for about £200 including delivery from Germany and then sell the car as planned.1 point

Looked at quite a few online and was surprised at some of the prices No haggling either on price, dealers just tell you cars are hard to get a hold of these days. Would usually look for a private sale bargain, but none within a reasonable distance, as always. Good luck with your purchase!1 point

Just part of car ownership I'm afraid, regardless of brand or £ spent, it is inevitable that crud will get caught up in the tiniest of gaps. I would suggest using compressed air to removed though, manual aggitation will ultimately result in scratching, no matter how soft the cloth. Happy cleaning! 😄1 point

100A Recon Alternator from EuroCarParts for £180 https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/lucas-alternator-401820111 Most recons are like this, where you buy and fit the recon part, and then ship your old alternator back to be remanufactured. When they remanufacture, they fit new bearings, brushes, rectifier/regulator, and any other wear parts, and then rewind the coils if needed. It then goes into stock to be sold to the next guy.1 point

John hi, I think £200 to extend the life of your exhaust ain't too bad at all .........the past 3 years or so my Ls400 downpipe end of the exhaust has had to be welded to fix the emissions issues for the MOT the entire exhaust is original and on 238k miles and my indy tells me will easily outlast the life of the car .......... subject to the downpipe front end being sorted by a specialist exhaust guy in Maidstone before the next MOT end of the year The exhaust is built like an armoured tank he assures me ........................... so just another 27 years life then eh Malc1 point

If your selling a car to buy your new one make sure you check out the prices on autotrader etc. I had an 07 fiesta, thought it would be worth £900 Being lazy, was happy with the price Autotrader said it was worth when you type in the year/ mileage = £1500 Sold it for £1350 and the guy that showed up was a dealer ? Did some searching online and similar cars going for £2500. My point being, would have knocked an whole lot more of the price f the new car. Ps, ive just bought an IS250, engine and gearbox (main concern) as reliable as you can get. Look online at more modern equivalent BMW and Merc, full of issues out of warranty and not a smart buy. I saw 2011 is250 going for £10500 at a Lexus garage with 60k miles, someones buying them! My budget was £7500, look for good history and be careful around some dealers. Had a few bull----s that lied about history and MOT history. Infact MOT history online is of great help.1 point

Facelift is a good shout, aside from adding from new styling choices, it benefits from engine improvements to prevent carbon build up older IS’s in the US suffered from (not an issue here in the UK) and the infotainment is slightly modernised with iPhone / iPod usb connectivity and Bluetooth music. Newer infotainment can be provided via an android replacement or a grom VLINE for wireless apple carplay / android auto, I myself use the GROM and thanks to working with them it does work rather nicely but both of these are expensive options! (£500) that sounds reasonably priced based on todays market for card and the low mileage, id certainly consider it but maybe see if you can negotiate on the price a little 😉1 point

Yes, the one I'm looking at is a face-lift model. I am fully aware that the same car in 2019 would probably be around £2K cheaper (85K miles, auto SE-L in very good order even if the original purchaser was a bit shy with ticking the options list - less to go wrong I guess @ £6K from a dealer)...but I'm prepared to swallow the shortage 'tax' if it can still hold its own today. You only need to check out spares 'n repairs on eBay to these are littered with 'modern' VAG and BMWs.1 point

I've had my 2010 IS250 F Sport Since December 2020 and for the price you pay (Mine was £4500) you get a whole bunch of car for the money. The fact that yours is an SE-L top spec model it has even more bells and whistles in which most of our German rivals tend to lack even in 2022. The only concern I have with an IS nowadays is how ridiculous fuel prices are and the car is far from the most economical, that is made up for by its supreme reliability though. If the price is right and the age of a car doesn't concern you then by all means its worth it! WIth it being 2009 is it the facelift model with wing mirror indicators?1 point

I agree with @rayaans on the ceramic coating. There's no way the dealer will put the effort into the preparation work before applying the coating. You are better going to a proper detailer and I doubt they'll charge you any more than the dealer. I also doubt it'll last 5 years, I think they typically last 2 - 3 years.1 point

Apart from age, you’ve only averaged 3,500 a year. Now if that’s been a lot of very short journeys, then the exhaust system hasn’t been getting hot enough to eliminate the water condensation produced inside it. So it just sits there, quietly corroding the metal from inside. As John has pointed out, in such circumstances you’ve probably done quite well to have it last as long as it has! If you can restore it for just £200, I’d say that was a something of a result!1 point

Managed to get Hollywood F2 rack. One of the suppliers I left my email with contacted me last week to say that they had them in stock again. Ordered straight away and it was delivered on Wednesday. Got it fitted, but waiting for some decent weather to get out riding. Rack fitted ok with a little bit of fettling. Bike fits ok. Like the anti sway system. Rack cost £199 from Deems Garage, a cycle outlet in the greater London area. Thanks to everyone for the advice and photos, much appreciated. Good cycling and motoring. Keith1 point

I agree with David and you Malc. If I had the option of buying another car one ICE the other EV and both the same price I'd actually go ICE even tho an EV makes perfect sense for me. Its the charging. To install a home charger at my home would cost a good few thousand quid. Wiring one in would be a doddle but it's the work involved in placing the charger as it would be at the bottom of my garden as my car driveway is there. Anyway as I've said previously I want to keep my is250 for as long as possible (unless I win a fair bit of wonga then I'd get RCF).1 point

GS is very well silenced, better than IS so noise and vibrations are not an issue; in some cases there was a vibration at low rpm and around 45 mph but there is a TSB with a software update I made and it disappeared, same on IS300h but it needed also a little mechanical mod. GS 450h is quite refined and smooth in daily driving, but if you wanna accelerate … WOW! No troubles in any overtaking 😉1 point

According to my database around £1500.00 for the section required from Lexus.0 points

What?? Sorry John but that sound incredibly cheap to me 1 litre of 98 in Holland goes for Euro 2.52/ltr at the moment!0 points
