  4. On the 12 March, we went over to Scotland (from Holland) to spend a couple of weeks with friends and family. On the 19th I received a text from the ferry company saying 'The last ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam leaves on the 21st - do you want to be on it?' The answer was 'Yes' and we cut our visit short. Before we left, realising we'd be in lockdown for a while, I made a trip to Halfords to get some materials to clean and shine the Lexus. These are what I bought: Over last weekend I set to work. I had never used a clay mitt before and was amazed how easy it was - and how effective. The headlight restorer worked well, also. The headlights weren't bad, but there was the odd scratch and a bit of discolouration in the corners. The kit is easy to use and comes complete with everything you need. After polishing, I applied the extra gloss protection. I'm very pleased with the result, see what you think: I need to get the alloys refurbished.....but that can wait. Next weekend, I'll do the interior.

  5. I have deleted reference to the Lucas battery I thought might be a possibility but it isn't. I have done a lot of research on an alternative battery to the Pan but none of what I have found on forums or seen advertised seems to come close - well maybe I have now found one that is close enough! I found it on a major Battery supplier's site in Belgium. It is the middle model of a small range of 3 Auxiliary batteries made by Hankook in Korea and is referenced AXS55D23L with 5 year guarantee. It's bigger brother the AXS65D26L is shown here https://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/product/hankook-axs65d26l-dual-purpose-agm-battery/ being sold by Battery Megastore for £106.97 but it is too long. I don't know whether they would be prepared to stock the AXS55D23L but I doubt it if they could only sell a couple or so batteries. I will sound out Megastore about this but before doing so would like to ascertain whether anybody else might be interested as they may take this into consideration. In need I could investigate the possibility and cost of importing the AXS55D23L from Belgium or agents in France. Just use appropriate plastic round the battery like some of us used to do with the flooded batteries before AGM.

  7. Bit more detailing work today on the taxi...... today the rear lights. Given that the rest of the car now looks so much better and has about 90% of the scratches removed I stated looking at the lights and could see they were dull and had a lot of swirls on them. They were stripped off the car as it was a lot easier to deal with them on the bench This one had a couple of deep scratches on it that always caught my eye With some scholl s30 black a finishing pad and a polishing pad The scratch has been removed And a 50/50, the polished one on the left It’s one of these small differences that no one else may notice, but I know they are done now Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  8. Got my renewal from FJ today. With all the current bad stuff happening, plus the issue with Lexus/Toyota hybrids and cat thefts, I was expecting a rise and to have to search for something new. Not easy with five cars to consider. But, the all-in cost came through at less than £660! The first benefit to me turning 50?........ Policy is with Ageas again, which I'm happy about.

  9. Many parts can be sold off if there is a practical way to handle it. Fenders, mirrors , engine , transmission, rear axle. Radio. Some parts are expensive and hard to find.

  11. I agree with you two guys on this. My 2007 car has incident radiation i.e. sunlight, sensors. The algorithm may have improved since 2007 but neural network? We should be grateful the words "turbo" and "laser" have not been used. John

  13. I remember an Interceptor being 'Best of Show' some years ago at a car show, (the metal bodied one rather than the fiberglass bodied one that had a charm of it's own). It costs a fortune to keep it in good order or fill it with petrol being a large American lump and spares generally available and if so at what cost? It's very dated in a number of respects, rear end suspension for example which is not independent. Probably better to get an Aston if looking at this sort of car. As regards the Bentley, these are bought by very well heeled individuals including overpaid soccer stars and pop stars initially or company chairman and the like. (The chairman of the company I worked for had a Bristol, another low volume car). But these sort of people often update frequently, so an extraordinarily expensive car depreciates quite quickly but then stabilizes some years on so that for example a good low mileage one can be had for a shade under 40K for a 12 year old. How much would a glorified Range Rover fetch 12 years on from new? In other words you would be buying the Range Rover at the higher end of it's depreciation curve but the Bentley much further down along it's depreciation curve and look at the craftsmanship that's gone into the Bentley.

  15. Even fuel cell cars need a battery like a hybrid to assist the fuel cell to get going. Hydrogen should be used for heavy haulage, busses and ferries. Batteries will improve to get the charge time down to an acceptable period.

  16. Hi, Heat the bolts with a butane flame and wrap a wet cloth around the bushings so they do not get burnt. Then cool the bolts and hit them with a hammer. Take care not to bend them. Make sure you have the nut fitted on the bolt so it just covers the bolt. This way you do not damage the thread of the bolt. Repeat the process until the bolts are free. Use WD 40 or a similar lubricant. Another way is to cut off the bolts to the size of the bushings, then drill through the bolts beginning with a small bit and use a bigger bit as you go on. Be careful you do not drill the bushing as well for obvious reasons. Alternatively, you could remove the bushings using the tool. Use heat while the bushings are being pressed to cause expansion to help freeing them. It may be worth replacing the bushes now, considering the trouble to remove them. Regards, Chris.

  17. Update: I ordered that C-clamp press tool and that arrived on Friday. I tried to press the bolt out from the bushing, but it did not move a bit. Only the control arm metal gave up: Then I took the angle grinder and a cutting wheel... and now the axle carrier is removed! Next I need to figure out how to get those bolts still off... might be easiest just to replace those bushings? BR. Sami

  18. I am about to change the oil in my GS450H. I was using 0w20, but iI am changing to 0w16. Not the reason for going to 0w16, but I find it cheaper than 0w20. Most manufacturers say it will give even better ware protection, and better fuel economy. If the manufacturers figures are true the saving in fuel between oil changes will more than pay for the oil. Using 0w20 in my engine at 145,000 miles did not show any increase in oil consumption that at worst is minimal dropping only slightly on the dipstick between 10,000 mile OCI. If my oil consumption doubles using 0w16 I can live with that as it will still not require topping up between oil changes. My oil usage is zero at the moment with the car SORNed for the duration of Corona. As far as oil filters go I cannot understand why Toyota/Lexus still use the replacement paper element filter or the fact that they are more expensive than the metal can type of filter. After all the can type still has the paper element inside plus a non return/drain back valve that is missing in the paper version, and must be more expensive to produce. Or is this a case of rip off Britain again?

  22. A bit of #CoronaWork - Gtechniq C2V3 topped with Zymöl Concours Wax. I must say that whatever powdercoat finish Lexus do to their wheels, these are the easiest to clean out of any wheel I’ve ever cleaned! Keep meaning to C5 them but they come up amazingly with just a light wash.

  24. Thanks Jason - fantastic thread! Of your list of jobs, I'm very interested in these 2: Transmission oil From what I understand, Lexus do not recommend you ever change the transmission oil and therefore do not make it easy - as least for a DIYer - to change it. Apparently dealers can do it but they have a special gizmo that allows them to extract the oil. I've read lots about peoples plans to actually do this but sadly noting at all about an actual IS300H transmission oil change. Egr cooler cleaned I've only heard of this being discussed as a Prius activity. Like the above, I have never seen anything about it being done on an IS300H, other than vague comments about how it should be. I've also read that the IS300H is a next generation Hybrid - as in newer hybrid technology than the Prius that you owned in the above pictures - and therefore this is not applicable. I did basic servicing on my last car - a Honda Accord 2.0 VTEC - but other than straightening a gearlever gaiter on my IS300H, I haven't touched it.
