Although I installed a space saver spare wheel in the boot of my ES and carried a mini trolley jack to use with my semi fixed jacking plates I was never happy with the space the trolley jack took up in the boot, plus the weight issue was another factor. I also had to abandon the original polystyrene tool holder and use another space stealing bag to hold them in. My jacking plates are to ensure no ham fisted technician raises my car with a two post lift with swing arms and damages my sill flanges, something I've spent hours repairing previously with other cars I have owned. I'm now going to abandon the trolley jack and now use the car's original scissor jack duly modified to take a machined cup that slips over my jacking plates as per the photos. I have never liked scissor jacks really given the weight they need to raise on such a tiny area of sill flange. I wanted a more robust beefed up scissor jack arrangement which gives me more confidence when and if I need to use my space saver spare which now sits in the boot. It is a large item to carry in the boot I admit but as the ES boot is bigger than my previous GS I'm never going to struggle for boot space. I've put back the polystyrene tool holder and created some cut outs for the machined cup and a couple of other items to aid wheel changing, a solid blue plastic wedge for uneven ground and a multi tool for general use. What next I wonder?

  3. My 460 has just completed 100,000 miles. After 15 years with a 400 I moved to the 460 in 2013. The car had 40,000 miles on it when I bought it. It has had one problem which I could attribute to Lexus - a glitch in the 'Self Parking' program, which was fixed by re-booting the system. Lexus did the re-boot, not me. That happened four years ago and hasn't recurred. It has had other problems: Flat batteries (2) when parked for a week or more. Lexus changed the batteries under warranty but decided to do an in-depth investigation after the second one. They found a tracker device which had been fitted when the car was new. It is now disconnected and I haven't had battery problems since. But the main problem was Scotland! Let me explain...………. I live in Holland and visit Scotland twice a year to see family. On one of my trips I hit a water filled pothole (actually, more like a sinkhole) and destroyed a front wheel bearing. On another visit, I had a puncture and an over-zealous tyre fitter ripped out the valve which damaged the TPMS transducer. Then, on a narrow country lane, a deer jumped over a wall in front of me. Luckily, I was only doing about 30 mph, so the deer survived unharmed but my front bumper needed some TLC and a respray. The car is serviced by a Lexus main dealer - the price difference between main dealer and indy isn't that much here - and I like to get the program updates. The car is great! I haven't had any problems with the air suspension although I did get the radiator changed, as a precaution, at the 100,000 mile service a couple of weeks ago. In typical LS style, EVERYTHING works just as it should. All the bulbs are the originals. The interior, particularly the leather, looks fantastic - better than my 400 did at that mileage. I have never driven a 430 so can't comment on them but, Malc, if you ever decide to go the 460/600 route I can thoroughly recommend it...……..just stay away from Scotland 😁

  4. I know you'll all be fed up with me saying this but....consider a Celsior. There are two very low mileage ones on eBay from Goodmayes where I got mine, the beautiful black one he's had for over a year so I'd be surprised if he wouldn't take 5k for it.

  5. Car was not serviced in 2015 Seller makes no claim that everything works Car was probably not sourced from a Main Dealer (as he claims that his Lexus are) He gives no undertaking re warranty Buyer Beware.

So Had a look at this vehicle advertised by a Motor Trader on ebay,but wasn't apparent what his/her trading details were so sent a message enquiring whether they had a garage etc......got no response until today when I got a call from a private number. Now i don't usually answer witheld numbers but I was expecting a call from an institution and they sometimes present that way through switchboards. Anyway it was said motor dealer who has my phone no because it goes on the ebay contact details to motor dealers. He was evasive on details and stated it was a lot of car for the money and I returned with "yes and cars like that that present big bills" to which he retorted "it's a Lexus my friend" Conversation ended shortly after that....... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174016547025?ul_noapp=true

  10. I almost bought a 600h a few months ago, lively drive but the advisory bits from the last service were eye watering. I absolutely adored my LS400 and with 16 years of ownership I think that shows how much I wanted to hang on to her and whilst it is a very different class of vehicle I am massively surprised with the IS300h I picked at very short notice because I needed a car after the LS went bang, Honestly I don't miss the old girl and on reflection i should have changed it years ago. Driving something modern and tight has its downsides in terms of it costs a bit more but it has many upsides too and the refinement is staggering in the IS - yes I am pootling around a bit more than I did in the LS but it's a very impressive vehicle and is giving me far less sleepless nights than a 600 would. I think if I was you I would stick with what you have now if it is all working and running well until the time comes when you absolutely have to change it.

  11. ah I see ! , we do at least every two years or so have a 3000 mile trip up to and around Scotland in the Ls400 Maybe if I buy another I'll save the Ls400 for just my Scottish trips then Malc

  13. Johnathan, reduced braking sounds very scary and I can appreciate why you both now have no confidence in the vehicle. It's odd that an issue with the ABS/pre-collision system didn't still allow the actual brakes to slow the vehicle (rather than the hybrid motors), the brakes are one of the most important safety systems and should be tested above/beyond normal conditions. I'm no expert but I would have thought a warning with the pre-collision system would have resulted in the dealership testing and re-calibrating the sensor. I've read that these sensors can get confused if they're dirty, covered in snow or even wet. Does the vehicle have a grill mounted sensor for adaptive cruise control and emergency brake assist? Has the vehicle had any work done around the grill or maybe even had the tracking adjusted? I hope it doesn't happen again.

  16. Saggy rear suspension, I'd walk away for that price. Looking at the prices, the LS seem to be appreciating. I paid £4400 for my 2004/03 plate LS with 91k miles in Jan 2018.

  20. Never had any issues with brakes on the 3 Lexus I've owned 2014 IS300h f sport 2015 GS300h and 2015 RX450h. Trouble is that all modern cars are so complex. Had a new 2014 Mini that would randomly do emergency braking at 70. Dealer never resolved the issue as it showed no fault codes because the computer had decided there was an emergency based on the camera system.

  21. Looks nice although I think for that price you could find lower mileage. The suspension shouldn't go down overnight or "settle" and as a guide on a flat surface it should measure about 27" from the ground to the wheel arch at the rear, that's the centre of the wheel, the front always has a much bigger gap.

  22. I had a run up from Sheffield because I'd heard so much about him and I wasn't getting any quotes local to me for less than £500. My GS has had a stainless exhaust fitted but the rear silencers are tiny and it drones terribly. I just want Tony to make it as quiet as possible. £299

  23. If you don't get satisfaction, I can recommend a place based in Benfleet Essex, 'Bonair AC specialist' that I used a few years ago when my LS430 rear AC pipe was damaged accidentally. They replaced the condensor (Lexus original) blanked off the rear AC (as the damaged pipe was above the rear diff and inaccessible for economc repair). The cost was circa £500 but 3 years on the AC is still super cold and I don;t miss the rear AC at all. If a pipe is damaged and accesible for repair, there are some excellent splicing kits for £20-30 - they work, but never ever use for brake pipes.

  24. Picked up the car today after 3pm, they had it since 9am yesterday. Looking great, seem all ok dash no marks and everything working. Two other SC430 in having the their airbags changed at the same time. Good work Lexus Cardiff ! Jack

  25. not bored, just wondering if and when I should ever " jump " into a different sort of car thinking it would possibly be a Ls600 maybe BUT I don't want this sort of think happening when I know my old Ls400 wouldn't perform like this, being Old School technology our 2006 Honda Legend SH-AWD is a good enough and quite luxurious car but just had a new alternator at 125k miles and it caused some issues tbh got her home but couldn't finish the parking (left awkwardly in the road blocking all bar small cars ) coz the battery was drained, couldn't put it into gear, nor use the steering coz they are both electronically controlled and no battery therefore meant zero movement too RAC shifted her, eventually when they arrived and then off to my indy ( £ 450 all up ) for a replacement alternator, some £500 less than the Honda Main Dealer who could actually source one, likewise my guy did, from Scunthorpe, yes there was one in the country for this ridiculously rare car ah, yes, btw, being rare doesn't mean lots of value to be sure ! sorry i digress a little Malc

  26. My wife experienced a scary issue with the brakes on her NX300h F-Sport (2017). She was driving along the dual carriageway (A8 in Scotland) on Monday morning when the dashboard lit up like a Xmas tree. Multiple warning messages relating to ABS, pre-collision, etc. Tried to stop the car but had almost zero braking power. Pushing the brake pedal all the way to the floor (unusual in itself) resulted in only the slightest amount of braking power. Really scary situation given she was travelling at 60MPH in early morning rush hour traffic. She eventually managed to stop the car. Called Lexus Recovery (AA) who came out within the hour. They confirmed something very wrong with brakes. Again the brake pedal was going all the way to the floor and making a strange noise when pressed. AA declared the car undriveable and ordered up a recovery truck to take it to Lexus Edinburgh. (Note: The AA man checked brake fluid and pads/disks and said no issues. He actually reported the problem on his sheet as potential shattering of brake servo!) Lexus Edinburgh put the diagnostic tool on the car which identified an error code for one of the rear ABS sensors. Apparently the way the sensor works (metal rotor spinning against a magnet) means that metal filings can break off and "clog" the sensor causing it to malfunction. So they took the sensor off, cleaned it out and then re-fitted it. Re-ran the diagnostics and no errors. And in their mind the problem was "probably" fixed and they would return the car. No assurances that it wouldn't happen again but if it did "they would take another look at it". So basically if the brakes fail at 70MPH on the motorway putting my wife in a very dangerous situation then they will do the decent thing and have another look. Unbelievable. They didn't bother to contact my wife to ask what had happened. Simply took the car off the recovery truck and ran their diagnostics and then followed the Lexus procedure which match the error code. Even when I rang them to explain what had actually happened they responded with "that couldn't possibly happen" and "a malfunctioning ABS sensor would not cause that to happen". So they were basically calling my wife and the AA man liars. I also pointed out to them that the (obvious) fact that the car had another three ABS sensors which had been on the car for exactly the same amount of miles (22,000) and as such there was a very high likelihood that they will have the exact same build-up of metal shavings, and therefore any one of them could be ready to fail. maybe in a day, a week or a month. And maybe the correct thing would have been to clean ALL of the sensors. But they weren't interested, Basically saying they wouldn't get reimbursed from Lexus for that work because those sensors were not showing as faulty. Again, unbelievable. And a complete lack of care towards the safety of one of your customers. I have no idea whether the malfunctioning ABS sensor was the issue. If it was, and it did cause a massive reduction in braking performance, then how can Lexus not class this as a huge safety issue. Losing 90-95% of braking performance without warning cannot be acceptable. Surely a malfunctioning sensor should just disable ABS. Why should it reduce braking performance. Where's the sense in that? Even cleaning out the sensor is a temporary fix as it will most likely happen again. Especially with four sensors. But more worrying is (if I believe the Head of Service at Lexus when he says the ABS sensor cannot cause this to happen) the possibility that it isn't the ABS sensor and the root cause of the issue is still there. End result. My wife will not drive the car. And I can't really blame her. She travels to work and back every day along the M8 motorway so maybe 90% of her everyday journey is at 70MPH. If the issue happens again its likely it will be at that speed. This time she was lucky in that she had literally just come off the M8 onto the sliproad so less traffic. She wants rid of the car. Immediately. So, obvious question, has anyone ever experienced something like this themselves in their Lexus.

  27. Sorry to hear that John. Someone managed to scrape the front bumper of mine a while back. All I can tell you is that the car was red Attempting to get it fixed in a couple of weeks with the local Chips Away guy coming to work. Fingers crossed he does a good job, although I am curious about how he fixes paintwork since he has never seen the car?

  28. Nothing, but somebody else scraped the rear bumper. Presumably all four corner having been scraped we now have to have the flatter bits damaged. Always happens when parked and we take trouble not to park where we might get scraped. John

  29. I took her down a lane where they had just walked 200 cows down for milking and she now looks as though I have been rallying. I have hidden her until I can get her nicely washed. She hates looking as though shes been dragged through a hedge backwards.
