  1. Hi, I've tried searching the forum, and several other forums, and shops but I can't find a definitive answer to what size the wiper blades are on a 1992? Also am I reading things right that there is some kind of special clip for fitting it? I can't just measure the old ones as the driver's side decided it fancied an extended vacation on the peage heading towards Le Mans this weekend and the car currently has a Porsche flag MacGyvered onto the arm with duct tape and good intentions, not sure measuring that will do much good...

  2. Can't remember for sure but think the series IV later models have automatic parking brake shoe adjusters and not the toothed wheel, I couldn't understand why there was no removeable rubber bung on the drum to poke the screwdriver inside to adjust the shoes. Basically calliper off, calliper carrier off, drum off after removing the 2 countersunk retaining screws, clean everything with brake cleaner, check everything that should move does or free off, if the brakes shoes still have minimum lining thickness clean them with some coarse grade sandpaper to remove any glazing. Lubricate all moving parts including where the shoes contact the backplate and pivot points. If the adjuster is manual refit the drum then turn the adjuster until the drum is locked then back off the adjuster until the drum is free to turn again ( very fiddly through the hole, not easy to see or work out which way to flick it with a screwdriver). Obviously make sure the parking brake is fully released and the front wheels are chocked ( there's one in the spare wheel well)

  3. I only read the first 3 posts and immediately thought reverse polarity battery connection, even got the OEM wiring manual out to see where the fuses are powered to and from, saved me looking through over 400 pages.

  4. Just got a back section from Ian, the back box has very little in it just looks like one pipe in and to output perforated tubes, will have to cut it up to have a better look. will probably try to run a perforated tube from the input to the two outputs and see what ti sounds like, but may end up with two new straight through back boxes.

  6. These cars are very reliable and 123k nor 150k is non-issue if looked after. Mine is now over 150k without major issue. Lexus IS250 will always be much better value for money than BMW 325i and will come much better equipped. Not sure what you mean by SE - because SE is basic trim level, while SEL is the best. So I guess you need to be looking for SEL either with or without sat-nav. My advice don't take FSH as some kind of indicator - look what was actually done. Mine had £1200 spent on average during each service as was really well maintained. There are certain mileage related items e.g. Water pump .. if it is 123k it must have been replaced at least once. Average pump life time ~90k, mine one was replaced at 122k which is probably one of higher end of mileage. I would take this Lexus even with 200k miles without worries if history can prove all necessary work was done in timely manner. So when you take all service history invoices .. look for last 3-4 and check if there were no advisories which were not covered in subsequent services. Checking MOT advisories on DVLA can give some indication as well e.g. if tires, disks, pads were wearing low or car failing emission test - stay away, likely to be rough one. I would advise for back interior - obviously personal choice, but black one wears much better and I guess it becomes concern for high miles car. I have bough 2010 AWD with 40k km (~25k miles) light grey interior and it looked worn out and was very hard to clean. Even after professional cleaning it was looking like car had covered much more than those 25k miles. Some can be attributed to how previous owner was caring after it, but at the same time my current back interior after 150k+ miles still looks almost new... Finally, point about Sat-Nav... Had 2012 IS250 F-Sport with Sat-nav and later 2010 IS250AWD without it... my personal opinion Lexus IS sat-nav is sub-par to comparable models, screen is low resolution, not great in sunlight and very unresponsive to touch. If it happens to be in the car you looking after - great. If not it is nothing you would miss. I am using my phone for short journeys - just because of mealtime road alerts and proper sat-nav for longer journeys making sure maps are updated. Lexus sat-nav in not good for neither of those, map updates expensive and even then still missing many recent changes.

  10. If you take the fuse out and the measure resistance between the fuse terminal and the chassis, it reads zero implies a short to earth. If not then it could something just drawing a shed load of current, which could be the ECU of radio. But as to what is was if it was the ECU or radio, would mean disconnecting them (one at a time), to find out the culprit. In my earlier Mk2, I used to find the fuse that deals with the cigarette lighter would blow if I had the lighter socket in use with the steering on full lock as the time I started up the engine. Never got to the bottom of that one, just made sure I never left car in full lock when turning off the engine.

  11. Rudy, I have a mk4 and servicing the parking brake is not as difficult as it first looks. In fact it's quite easy once you get going. I have a service manual CD and by using this I managed to lubricate and re-adjust the parking brake for each of the rear wheels. If you can find a good diagram on line you are halfway there. The trickiest part was initially finding the adjuster, (a semi-hidden toothed wheel) and then using a long thin screwdriver to tighten/slacken each side. All the parts disassemble and reassemble like a Lexus should. You might need to use an impact screwdriver to get the two screws off that hold the disc to the hub though. Once that is off all is revealed. I'm pretty sure that earlier cars also have the same set up.

  12. Good to hear some positive views from a potential owner. The synthetic noise can be turned off - there's a little dial which says ASC on the right of the steering wheel.

  13. Good write up I couldn't really care less about mpg but the obsession about keeping that Eco light on drives me mad . I also really liked the way the car could either be a serene waft around the place in silence or near to on the one hand, and then, whack it into sport and drive like a getaway car . I also agree the F Sport looks the business.

  17. Yes these recent posts all have a sense of deja vu about them ! The problem with the 400h battery was that it did not have the 45Ah capacity that was specified for it. It is rather difficult to measure, but you can quickly produce an estimate by seeing how quickly it discharges to a specific voltage with a given load. With the intelligent charger, a constant current is used, so if you know this current you can then time how long it takes to fully charge back again, when an LED indication is shown on the charger. I used both methods and got close agreement in the result. My "new" replacement battery was around 15Ah ... just one third of the specified value ! These batteries are designed to have a very low self discharge, so it is not likely to be due to a long shelf storage prior to shipment. It is impossible to reject them back on the supplier as there would endless arguments about how this capacity test is performed of course. But it is difficult for me to see how my estimate could be so far out and as it also provides a credible explanation as to why there were so many problems with the 400h 12v auxiliary batteries, I sense that my result may not be that far out. I guess Lexus had designed the 400h on the basis of the specified value being correct. It's a pity that they didn't do more real time tests on the actual performance of the batteries on the real market! Perhaps the batteries they were "given" for their development tests were not representative of those that were supplied much later, in the production run ! I expect the true story will never surface of course. There are a lot of suspicious activities in the motor trade, as the recent scandal with VW emissions tests has revealed. Of course it is all a matter of saving as much money as possible, all at the expense of the end user, who never receives what is promised, because every effort is used to conceal the truth. But now it seems VW are going to have to pay for their deception and that is going to cost them billions ! I think the Bosch 45Ah battery is much better from the reports of users fitting this, but apparently Lexus were not prepared to do this as they may have a fixed contract with their own suppliers. It is not surprising that many 400h owners have chosen to fit their own Bosch batteries when their existing batteries expire yet again ! So the question now of course is what is the real capacity of the 450h batteries ? It is specified as 60Ah, so it might actually be 20Ah with a little luck ! Well even that is 33% more than the 400h battery ! So of course the answer is that you always have to manage what you are given.

  19. I first became aware of this recall in October 2013, when I had my car serviced by Toyota and they flagged it up . This was probably because their dealership ( Motorline ) also sold Lexus at other locations, and this is the dealership where I originally bought my car, around 5 years ago now. So it seems they share records with Toyota in this instance. Nice eh ? I got the official Lexus recall letter the following month and had the work done in late December 2013. I had to wait for that as there were quite a lot to do, according to Lexus. Even so it was reasonably quick eh ? The work is done free of charge, but as it takes 4 to 5 hours, a free courtesy car is offered, so I took advantage of this and just had to pay for the petrol I used. The work involves removing the inverter and replacing some parts within it, as apparently there were a number that had failed due to bad soldered connections. It is quite possible that many that were recalled would never had failed anyway, but as it is a very expensive part to replace, Lexus were very kindly recalling any that they thought might be at risk and identifying these from their build records. Really good PR job then eh ? I believe this was not a safety issue, so it is not listed on the DVLA recall records. As I understand it, the car is put into a limp mode, so you can still continue to drive it, but I guess you would have a problem restarting it, as the traction battery and inverter are used for this. So it is certainly not a fault that you can fail to recognise. It's remotely possible there are a few cars out there where the recall work has been missed, especially if the official letter did not find its way to the latest owner and the car was not serviced by Lexus after October 2013, when they would have automatically flagged it up. So, as stated previously, contact Lexus as they should be able to check if you car has been done and sort this out for you for free, if it has been missed. I am pretty sure your car would have been done, but to put your mind at rest it is best to check eh ? Hope this makes you feel a lot better now as that inverter is really expensive to replace !
