  1. I am a bit shocked really that the garages you took this to could not find the fault Surely having two people involved would surely identify where the noise is coming from (one turning the steering wheel and the other in the wheel arch (presuming the wheel is off)) I would change your garage to be honest. You could narrow it down yourself by using a sound bar or stethoscope with the help of another person - the noise will always be heard through vibration through other components but it will be more intense where the noise is emanating from. Get someone to sit in the car and turn the steering wheel. Someone in the wheel arch with the sound bar or stethoscope. Safety first though, make sure the car is securely on jacks

  2. Thanks for all the replies. Did worry me a little at the time, the thing i found most odd was why they didn't leave a phone number. As said above decent ones are getting very hard to find. I was lucky finding this a year ago as had almost given up. I guess it qualifies as being decentish. On 140k now and drives as would be expected for that mileage so i believe is genuine. Last owner had it 10 years and have all the history and loads of invoices etc. I had cambelt and water pump etc changed when i got it, rear springs replaced and a good service (less the iridium plugs) since then just a couple ofm oil changes and mots, passed both times without even an advisory but then my old one always did pass as well. Has some niggles of course, bodywork is good excluding the bumpers could do with a repaint and passenger side rear door has a weird crease in it. Also wheels need a refurb, to make matters worse they are the mk3 wheels off my old one as the wheels on this were dreadfully in need of refurb so i swapped them over. Thought was good idea at the time but regret it now as it doesn't look quite right and despite them having been refurbed a few years back they have deteriorated massively in the past year. Drives great, occasional slight steering vibration but then i need to get a pair of tyres on the front so that will resolve that hopefully. Could do with a four wheel alignment too i guess as follows the camber of the road more than my last one. Slight fast clicky noise when accelerate hard, sounds like a minor exhaust blow but whenever had the chance to get under it all seems fine. Maybe just the sound of the vvti engine? Seems to roar more than the mk3 i had before, is likewise quite noticeably better on fuel, tighter to drive and a lot more powerfull. That said the engine in the mk3 was quiter even with starship enetrprise mileage. I have driven these for about 10 years now and still my favorite model of car compared to everything else i have ever owned. Only old cars i have owned as well. I use it every day which i think is unusual for one of these now? Hence in some ways i am glad it isn't a mint unmarked example. Last weekend another inch long scratch appeared on corner of rear bumper while it was parked up at the holiday park we have a static on. I just think oh well the bumper needs painting anyway. Altough my wife and Daughter point out that's not quite what i said at the time

  4. So Gents it appears we may have a mini mini meet on our hands on Thursday (19th) up and around the Warrington / Chester area. Just thought I would update in this thread (apologies once again for the hijack) to see if we have any other owners in the area looking to join myself and Warrington guy for an hour or so. No location agreed yet. Great to see what we can do. Whether its of interest or not but I stay in the Hilton Double tree just outside Chester that has very pleasant grounds and a huge car park... nice bar to, which of course serves coffee and soft drinks Should also add that I'm happy to drive to wherever is decided. Above just an option.

  5. Why not? It's more tasteful than some of the modifications we see on here.

  6. Time for a mini update. All booked in for the end of next month. Final price is £850 and that includes the cutout valves. I will however need to find an electrician to wire the power supply in for them. Final design will be as planned, just need to decide on how loud I want the new back boxes to be. I've spent the past few days driving my brothers XFR which has aftermarket back boxes that sound like this - Downshifts in sports mode in the XFR are stupidly fun. Trying to decide if I want something just as antisocial or if the valves will do the job for that.

  7. Picture below is from a how to in changing the callipers that I posted a while ago for both the mounts and callipers. I don't know who has told you that you need new bolts for the front. Unless the bolts holding the calliper carrier are seized on the car - haven't heard that before. I think they more than likely mean the slide pins (x2). These will seize if they are not regularly maintained. Its a good idea to know how to do these as like you are experiencing now, every couple of years you will be looking at a cost to either replace or un-seize them. It is an easy job. No real mechanical know how is required but if you are not sure, best not to mess about with your brakes (same for the rears and if you are looking at a full replacement of callipers for all 4 corners then you will have a hole in your pocket to the tune of around £1300, dealer price, fitted !). The top picture shows the carrier / two securing bolts and the two slide pins. The bottom picture is of the new carrier. You will probably find that the whole assembly is easier to find rather than the carrier itself. If you find a carrier then its important to ensure the brake pad pinch clips are included on the carrier - if not then rescue them from the old carrier. I may have a used spare one in my garage - I will have a look and let you know.

  10. Hi Just had a full, 80,000 mile service on my 2001 RX300 SE at Lexus Cardiff. As usual the level of customer care was excellent and included a courtesy car. an IS 250. Items replaced included gearbox oil at £18.40 which I assume was used to replace the rear diff oil and transfer gearbox oil as indicated on the service schedule. As you say the schedule only requires that the automatic transmission fluid is checked. I will get this changd as I intend keeping the car for some time. The cost of the service was £273 inc VAT and discount. Lexus Cardiff have a scheme where Lexus vehicles over 3 years old qualify for increasing discounts as they get older. My vehicle at 6+ yrs old qualified for 20% off labour and 10% off parts. This increases to 40% off labour and 20% off parts for a vehicle over 10 years old Hope this helps.

  11. When we bought our RX as an AUC from Lexus Croydon almost two-and-a-bit years ago, amongst the long list of work they completed, I was very pleased to note they had (as part of the 40K service) changed the ATF as well (stating on the invoice they used a 80W-90 oil). I'm not sure if the ATF change forms part of the 'usual' service regime given how proudly many manufacturers proclaim their gearboxes to be 'sealed for life' - I was certainly pleased to note it had been changed and that it is possible to check the levels of the ATF as Lexus provide a dipstick. Its always best to change the ATF more often that recommended - but it might be worth people checking to see if this has been done as part of the 40K service?

  12. Change the gearbox fluid, it isn't specified in the maintenance schedule but many failures reported in the US if the fluid isn't replaced. Check the colour of the fluid on the dipstick, it should be nice and bright red but will probably be dark red/brown.
