The airflow through the filter is from top to bottom - ie the airflow arrow should be pointing downwards. The frame into which the filter fits has an 'up' arrow - that obviously should point upwards - ie opposite to the airflow arrows on the actual filter. Actually I don't understand why the bottom side of the filter gets to look dirtiest (or at least blacker) - surely you would think that dirt would get trapped at the first surface it comes to and that (top) side would get to look dirtiest. But it doesn't! This a subject of much debate on Toyota/Lexus forums worldwide, and just about everyone is confused! (And I'm not sure about me!) And at the end of the day, I'm not sure what difference it makes - both sides of non-original filters look the same to me!2 points

Hello all. For what its worth - I'm a very new Lexus owner (LS430 '02). Last June I purchased it, October it passed its MOT but (there's usually a "but") there was little service history, and I did not know if it had a timing belt done - so I checked a few places for quotes, and do you know; the least expensive was Lexus in Bolton ( £500 including water pump ). On Friday morning I took it in, got a curtesy car (CT200h). By the time I got home they rang me up to say that the radiator was kaput, they even sent me a video of the problem rad. Strange as it may seem I was seriously considering a new rad because of problems with auto box's mentioned in other posts. A little earlier today I went to pick her up (and pay!!!!!) - they had given her what seemed to me was a great valet (inside and out) - I was glad to be back driving her - the CT200h was a nice car, but not in the same league. I think that sometimes we (me) give the main dealers a bad time - I must admit, thus far, they have played fair by me (apart from trying to charge £70 for 5 litres of oil. Sorry about the rambliness ( is that a word? ) Here's hoping I keep away from my wallet for a goodly while. Best wishes to all, Bob.1 point

Hi all, New Berkshire based owner here.. I picked up a 2008 low mileage (49k) 400h a few weeks ago, and am slowing adjusting to it and its reactions from people! Looking forward to getting some good ideas and info from you all.. as well as contributing as best I can :) I have already:- Swapped out the 90s style wiper blades for retrofit aero style blades. Changed all the interior/number plate/sidelight yellow bulbs for white LEDs. Replaced the paper air filter with a K&N drop in. Fitted the Lexus plastic rear bumper protector. Given it a good machine polish and buff (albeit there's still more to be done, as its spent 8 years street parked in London!!) Next to be done is the front brakes (MTEC disks/Brembo pads).. and a wheel refurb/colour change (do 19" RX 450h alloys fit the 400h?!?) Anyhoo. enough about me.. and howdy! goose1 point

If Justin hasn't bought the RX yet, he could try and use the 'standard' Lexus dealer pricing for the maintenance needed as a bargaining chip to lower the price - hopefully they'd meet him in the middle then he can buy the RX and take the Lex to a reputable independent garage to do the work for half the dealer's price, that way all parties win and Justin will have peace of mind without being stung... Hi Paul i also have moved from the ct to an IS i have the luxury model at the moment i am returning 46.7mpg and during the warmer weather i get 52'ish mpg so for me its only about 6mpg less than the ct its 6mpg worth losing,the IS is quicker ,quieter and smoother and pairing your phone is easy then transfer your phonebook in 1 what more can you ask for,i am on 17" all round and the tyres cost less for the IS compared to the CT must be a more everyday size . so to sum up pick up your wallet have a test drive then buy one before leaving the dealership.1 point

John, disconnecting the battery can cause the VSC light to come on. Once you drive a few miles it will go out. Don't forget, if your car is a 2000 Mk4 LS you need to leave the ignition key switched in the 'on' position (one notch before 'start') for 6 minutes or the car won't start. DON'T press the accelerator either. Hope this helps.1 point

Hi All - first post for a prospective owner. Really glad I found this thread. I tested a 'keenly' priced 400H yesterday. 08 plate with 97K miles. I was trying to work out why it's probably a couple of hundred below trade value and now thanks to this thread I know it's due a 100k service which is going to cost a bit. Looking at an older car tomorrow but it's had the belt change done.1 point

Wheels are different yes - 225/40 r18 on front and 255/35 r18 on the rear - same as Premier and F-Sport models. The IS F-Sport rides better than a CT advance and therefore you can imagine that the Sport rides better than all CT variants There is no suspension change between Sport, Luxury and Premier. Only the F-Sport gets stiffer suspension. If you are set on the IS300h Sport, may I recommend Broadspeed? They've got £4419 off list price so you can get one for £25775 + paint Having said that - I should mention that there is a new model coming out later this year/early next year called the UX250 and UX250h. Its a small SUV based on the CT1 point

I recently went from a CT advance (pre facelift model) to an IS advance. Before the CT, I had a Honda Accord 2.4 auto estate. The IS is the car I should have bought instead of the CT. The CT and IS are very different cars. I have never had a rear wheel drive saloon before but the IS is the best car I have had and is more like the accord. The IS looks stunning, drives well, is well equipped and quiet. I am getting low 40s mpg but on longer runs currently 50 mpg. Which is about 10 mpg less than the CT but 20 mpg better than the accord and the car tax is £10 not £450. Things I miss about the CT. Rear was wipe, the sat nav which was a TomTom in my advance model. The IS satnav is okay to use but it is a bit slow to tell you of hold ups and she is very posh. On the whole I do not regret changing from the CT to the IS. It's in a different league to the CT. As for the sport model. Don't know much about it. I think it is cosmetic changes rather than an f sport. But then I never got the point of the f sport anyway. I want comfort and luxury over speed and the standard IS is fast enough for me. Have a test drive in an IS but be prepared to want one after you do.1 point

Thanks for this, now I remember Colin Barber mentioning this a while back. My NX has the Qi charging plate in the armrest compartment. Although Apple don't support wireless charging I have a thin adapter sitting behind the phone back and case. This plugs into the lighting port on the phone and is really discrete. If I do get another Lexus it will almost certainly be a mk4 LS400. I don't think I would risk another 430. As you say the design flaws are now starting to show and most repairs are in the 4 figure area. I feel that if I would've sorted the gearbox the suspension would probably go wrong next!!! I feel the LS400 is more robust with the original Lexus over-engineering.1 point

Leg room in the 2nd gen was hindered by the relatively short wheelbase and super thick seat backs. 3rd gen has a longer wheelbase and thinner seat backs which helps tremendously. Of course front and rear legroom is relative to the position of driver and passenger seats but no one would fit behind me in the 2nd gen, I'm 6 ft but in the 3rd gen I can actually use the back seat for adult humans1 point

I've seen 6.7 seconds quoted for the Mk4 before now. It's less than 7 anyway, and that's quick for an old 'waftmobile'.1 point

DJP, if you are charging your iPhone when driving you can activate 'Hey Siri' to open him/her up! Handsfree. But it only works while charging I think. See screenshot. Select General then Siri. Sent from my iPhone using Lexus OC1 point

I believe that the current model is slightly longer than the previous ones and leg room in the rear is definitely better. The front legroom doesn't seem to me to be any more or, if it is, it is not noticeable. The front seats seem a bit lower so it may not be comparing like with like.1 point

I travel where ever for cars, I don't get people restricting themselves to a distinct area for a sizable purchase, second to a house/mortgage a car is probably your single highest investment, it it worth travelling for one? hell yes.1 point

I agree that the car is reliable, however you soon get the £1,000 back by getting fairly minor items sorted out, Items you might otherwise consider leaving with due to the cost of parts and labour. In today's money, £1,000 is not a lot of money, in particular where luxury brands are concerned. Under warranty, I have had replaced both taillights due to condensation and one mirror that would no longer darken. As pointed out above by Tom, other brands may have refused to pay out and put these faults down to wear and tear, but mine were replaced without quibbling. And I got a free courtesy car. And my car got valeted while at the dealer. And I am still covered for 2 years.1 point

Hope you don't mind me chiming in Just wanted to say that I also agree the extended warranty is worth getting. On mine, 2 months after purchasing it, my car needed a new flywheel. Lexus Edgware Road took care of it, no fuss. As such, the warranty has now paid for itself, and I still have peace of mind for some time to come.1 point

Martin, you should have gone for an LS400 mk4 instead. The LS430 has more known potential expensive faults (as you found out, unfortunately), and it seems like the 430 design faults are now beginning to show up. My 400 is not perfect, but, certainly more 'bulletproof' than anything else I've driven over the years. In 43 years of driving, nothing has come close to giving me the driving pleasure that my Mk4 does and that includes big American cars and Porsche.1 point

Yes I did. My local garage was useless and could not figure it out. I took the car to an auto electrician and they fixed it, it took a couple of hours' labour. The problem was the level and even seating of the ABS sensors. Corrosion had got in behind the area where the sensors mount, disturbed the mounting surfaces such that the sensors were not mounted flat and perfectly evenly. Unless they are absolutely flush, the sensors think that the wheels are rotating at different speeds like they were skidding (as in normal driving, where the wheels are all turning at the same speeds, the sensors are all giving precisely consistent wheel speed readings). So the ABS was activating when it shouldn't have been, and that is the noise and pulsation you are getting. The sensors are giving uneven readings and tricking the car into thinking that it's wheel spinning or skidding. The guys removed all the ABS sensors, gave their mounting areas and the bodies of the sensors a good clean and smooth-down, and remounted. That was it - it has been fine ever since, with no recurrence. If you are planning on doing this job yourself, be aware that when mucking about under there myself, I destroyed one perfectly good sensor as they are very tricky to get out without proper tools and access on a ramp. At over £100 a piece for even aftermarket ones, I gave up at that point and sought garage help. Hope this helps!1 point
