  1. I don't get why you're all so negative. Truth is, IS220D may not be as reliable as a petrol Lexus, but it's a hell of a lot better than the Germans and most other Japaniese diesels. Diesels used to be more reliable than Petrols, and go for longer without requiring repairs, but nowadays with the emissions requirements all diesels are a lot less reliable. Because of the associated emmisions hardware (EGR clogging up, DPF failures, head gasket issues because of the EGR, etc), all diesels are less reliable than petrols nowadays. if you compare the failure rates of the IS220D and the diesel competition of similar age, the IS220D is a lot more reliable. Not Lexus reliable, but very reliable for newer diesels. I'm saying that as mine's just gone through its 200,000th mile today with the same engine/gearbox/turbo, and most other components.

  2. What would be a fair price for a April 2008 grey IS-F with 61k on the clock? Private sale not dealer. Usual FSH with a couple of minor services at a toyota dealer, body work in good condition, interior well cared for, usual wear on bolster driver side, 2 prev owners. 18k sound ok? To be clear this isn't an ad before I get told off :) I am not selling mine just yet but considering options for near term.

  3. Congratulations David! Great result. My 2014 MOT advised generalised corrosion to a number of underbody parts but it seems to have been an over-zealous tester because last year it sailed through with no advisories even though no underbody wrk had been done. Which is not to say that rustproofing is a waste of time, though.

  5. Hi Just to counter foxy-stoat, it is an interferance engine and if the belt goes its knackered, its a common misconception because the 1mz- fe on the Camry is non interferance, the later 1mz-fe vvt-i are interferance and thats whats fitted to the RX300s of all years! Cheers Jason

  6. I just buy the cheapo flat blades from ebay now and change then annually. They work really well, but on my wife's RX I left the auto wiper function on and the car was frosted and ripped one when they went off - no great loss at a few pounds, plus I keep a spare set in the boot (year old ones). I bought expensive silicon rubber blades for my LS once, but couldn't get on with them as I had to turn off wipers as soon as water cleared otherwise they squeaked terribly. Pete

  7. Transmission and engine mounts would be my 1st thought, pretty easy to see if the engine mounts are worn, rev the engine and see if it rocks side to side excessively (or would those champayne glasses slide off the bonnet). Garage would be able to check the transmission mount.

  8. Depends on your annual mileage - but I opted for a low mileage 300 - plus 400h gearstick......just need to find the time to fit the silver vinyl wrap to all the wood trims.

  9. Cambelt 10 years or 100,000 miles, although its a non interferance engine but good to get piece of mind and saves on recovery costs if it was to let go and water pump replacement at the same time. It should of been done at this mileage but always check the invoice, budget around £400 - non Lexus dealer. Check everything works, load and eject cd's a dozen times during the test drive - error 4 could help you knock a few hundred off the price. Drop and raise the suspension a few times, look underneath for rust, little torch and beedy eyes around the engine including power steering pump and all pipes, leaks are common. Just do the normal checks with wishbones, brakes, even tyre wearing, inside and out. Check all the windows and roof, if the one touch isnt working then it needs a reset. Check power boot works. If it has faults then price it accordingly, plently out there and they are a hard sell with the horrible MPG figures so its a buyers market. I picked up a 53 reg SEL with 47,000 miles last year for less than £6,000 so you can pick up a decent Gen2 for £4K. I was watching a number of RX's for a month on Ebay/Autotrader before I bought the current one, you will see the same ones advertised for weeks on end - so I looked at the newly listed adverts, the good/cheap ones dont tend to hang around for long. Good luck, you will be waffing along nicely once you pick up the right RX.

  10. I think the 220D has been knocked a bit harder than it should however specifically talking is250 vs is220D, it seems the IS250 petrol is the preferred model regarding reliability. Probably due to how people's driving styles (lots of stop starts and not enough time to get the car hot or on long runs). In regards to petrol vs diesel, they both have pros and cons and people who buy a diesel should know exactly what they are getting themselves into/driving style/etc. In this thread, we may have saved the OP from headaches of getting a 220D down the road but this carbon build/DPF issue exists on other cars too so we cant taint the 220D alone. The decision it seems that an petrol is250 SE-L / F sport model with auto seems to be the favored here but thats not to say its the best car here.

  12. That is true Mike but I would get screwed somehow. Perhaps revised actuarial calculations for the likelihood of vandalism in my postcode. They would not miss the opportunity because that is life nowadays, everyone wants their hands in your pocket

  14. If you're planning on keeping the car cleaned and polished you can't beat the red and blue. They are in a different class to all other colours. Simply stunning. If you can't keep up the cleaning regime go with silver. It looks pretty much ok in all states but doesn't turn heads in quite the same way when the suns shining. White and grey fall in between the two comparisons for me.

  15. £62 for wipers!!! Are they 18ct gold plated? That's the price of 2 oil changes (including 2 filters). I paid a tenth of that price for my wipers (which work brilliantly) and I'm pretty sure the Lexus ones won't last ten times longer.

  16. if they wash it, the condition will no doubt worsen..... dealer washes avoid at all costs!

  17. We're probably unfair on 220Ds when they are used as they are supposed to be! Yours has averaged 20K miles a year - I guess you mostly do longish journeys, or at least do so regularly. That's what keeps a modern diesel engine in good nick. But many people don't do that - they use the car locally and only do a decent run once a month or so (if that). And they don't drive hard enough (few people do) - but that means the dpf doesn't get regenerated and the EGR clogs up. So many people have been conned into diesels by alleged good minimal fuel consumption and low road tax - then they drive them round town, never get above 50 mph and never do more than 20 miles at a time. And they get problems. Diesels are fine for long distance company car drivers or people with a similar driving regime. They are totally unsuitable for normal commuters, school runs and shoppers. (As the insurance companies put it - social, domestic and pleasure). IMHO. Horses for courses!

  19. Hi all, So have been reading up on filters and found an interesting article as to why you should avoid the cheap brands such as Blueprint/FRAM - even K&N (can you believe it!) and others, when compared to the original Toyota filters commonly made by Denso. If you look a couple of posts down on the thread, you'll see lots of filters opened but none of them match the Toyota filter for quality (even the TRD branded one!) - then a few more posts down, you'll see a filter element unrolled on the floor (K&N vs Toyota) - what would you rather have filtering your oil? I'm sure the tests would hold true for the air filters as well. It's a shame most of the filters are American brands (although you can get some here in the UK) - it would be useful to know which euro/UK brands were horribly cheap or good value, but for me, I'll be sticking with the Mr T items... Hope you find this interesting: http://www.spyderchat.com/forums/showthread.php?27947-Oil-Filter-Exposed Chris.

  20. Not yet had any problems with my "sun" roof, (fingers firmly crossed). When listing criteria before purchase I specified silver finish and black interior as being the most user friendly, ( I am not a fanatical car cleaner). However when looking at/sitting in many 400`s over an extended period we both commented on how dark the interiors were on those with the black leather & carpets. This is no doubt exacerbated by the privacy glass in the rear. SWMBO finally made the stipulation that if it was to be a black interior then it must have the sun roof to raise the interior light level. Result ! Happy wife and I still don't have to spend all my time cleaning the dam thing. I do make a point of cleaning out the roof recess and squirting water down the drains when I do finally acknowledge the need to clean the car. Just my thoughts.

  21. Just my opinion, but if you are thinking about spending some more money for a IS 300h Premier, try a GS 300h, it is more refined and it has rear camera and other comfy features also in base version.

  23. You're not on your own, the same problems will effect all owners eventually. This is by a long way the best forum I've ever been a part of, and the general consensus I've got is "if the job's worth doing, it's worth doing right", which matches my philosophy. I'm confident I will find a way to recycle the UCA's to an OEM or better standard, and I'll test them on my own car for 12 months ( my annual mileage is around 32k a year) and report back my findings.
