  2. I now fully understand! I think the economy, on a run, is very good for such a large car and engine. It is such a pleasure to drive. Hard to comprehend its age. Not sure many new cars costing upto £20,000 would be any better. I am beginning to wonder if we should keep it a secret? If too many people cotton on we might find it hard to replace ours in the furure! LOL! I would be hard pressed to come up with an alternative for the money. They are remarkable value, when compared to newer models, that you can justify spending a bit on repairs. I am more than pleased with RIO!

  3. Disagree. Clearly those backing and promoting this aren't yet 70years of age Those who introduced the drink/drive legislation weren't drunks, but it doesn't mean they weren't right to do so. At least doctors now have an obligation to report older drivers who might be losing some of their abilities. Of course there are other motorists who might do us harm through their incompetence and lack of regard, but should one particular group be protected from standards that are applied to others just because of their age? Should we be pro-active in an attempt to reduce risks? Or should they be allowed to 'soldier on' regardless because, for example, 'its their only way of getting around'? We all know that, with age, both physical and mental ability tend to decline. If a new, younger, driver went for a test and had reactions so slow that he was a risk to others, would he, should he, be given a 'pass'? Like I said, I think we should all be re-tested regularly anyway. At present, re-tests can only be ordered by a court under certain circumstances - its a reactive process, something has to already have happened for it to be applied. Pete Only if ALL drivers are tested at fixed intervals. Some of us older drivers still remember how to overtake safetly on single carriageways an art that is being lost because of dual carriageways and motorways. Also most older drivers started out riding motorcycles/scooters as cars were unaffordable in our youth. Riding a m/c or scooter gave them an acute awareness of their surroundingsa as well as quick reflexes. Today and for a couple of decades prior young drivers can go straight into highpowered cars with little experience of how to handle them particularly when they get out of shape

  4. Yes let us know how it goes and what brand it is. Although stone chips aren't problematic on the RX, my wifes IS is much lower so stone chips are always going to happen at a greater frequency

  5. I don't have much choice as I'm disabled , so I can't do it myself, so I take mine to Lexus Birmingham but they always do a good job as far as I'm concerned and the car is always spotless afterwards Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk

  7. I reckon the trip computer is 1-2mpg optimistic, compared to my brim-to-rim calcs. Best I had was the euro road trip section through France, Belgium and Holland. 34mpg. This last week, I got approx 30-32mpg over 3/4 of a tank at 65-70mph cruising. If you have the 'Current MPG' showing with cruise control on, you can see how even slight inclines cause a big change in consumption. I could see it drop from 34mpg on the flat to 22mpg on the M11's hills near Duxford. I doubt anyone living in a hilly area gets anywhere near the figures lowlanders like me see. :)

  8. I can't remember half of the stuff I got taught when taking my driving lesson. Frankly a re test doesn't prove anything. Older drivers will just take lessons and go back to how they drove normally Like all tests, it shows how good you are at faking/learning to drive properly, it doesn't show that you WILL drive that way. Take a look at all the Taxi drivers who reverse into main roads, undertake, go over the speed limit by a great proportion, park pretty much anywhere to pick people up etc etc.

  11. As above when I first got my '94 The alarm would go off for no apparent reason. It never happened again after fitting a new car battery. It might be worth checking the door switches......

  12. Am new to Lexus with IS300h Exec after 20+ years of BMW. Am adjusting to new driving style and don't think mpg is so good. Best so far is 56mpg on mixed trip - country roads+ mway. I often use French mways where BMW excelled so hoping for better things when weather warms. Bit tight on maps etc storage but comfort is great and wife says it is THE most comfortable seat ever !. Looking forward to trouble free motoring after too many blown BMW turbos !

  14. Assuming the patronising suggestions of checking everything's clean and clear have been addressed..... the fact that the interior light goes out as normal could just be low voltage to a sensor. Is your car battery in good condition? It's just a thought, but I've had odd electrical issues like this with many other cars and all were because the battery was on its way out.

  15. Yes, and then we might see it for sale in the Dudley area, described as 'immaculate, no accidents...' etc.

  16. Speed varied from 60 mph to 80 mph. I would describe my driving style as smooth and steady. When traffic conditions allowed (it was quite busy being a Bank Holiday) I put the cruise control at 70 mph. Constant speed driving on a motorway is the best for economy. On the way down to Bristol I got 31 mpg but travelling in city traffic (heavy in Bristol) really knocks down the economy and it was reading 29 mpg as I left Bristol. Town driving, even with a very light throttle, knocks the mpg right down. This was all based on the computer but I will do a fill-up and calculate again. I am not particularly concerned about mpg - as I am running a 4 litre V8! - but it is interesting to compare with my old 2.0 petrol people carrier. People's perceptions of the LS 400 V8, not familiar with the Lexus, are also interesting. "What do you get to the gallon? 15 mpg?" After frowning at them they say "Oh, around 20 mpg then? If I can get between 28 and 30 mpg on a long run, then I consider it worth every penny for the driving experience an LS 400 gives. When you need to accelerate from say 60 mph - the power is superb. On the negative side of driving the LS 400 ............. well I can't find one yet.

  17. Insurance company have made their first offer. £600 !!. Told them to 'go away'. They told me to e-mail proof of a higher price. I did. Two on Autotrader, both '97 MK3's like mine but with 60-70,000 more miles on for £1089 and £1500. I await the reply with bated breath. Am I being unreasonable here?. Surely as the innocent party,I'm entitled to look for a 'like for like' car, which £600 ain't going to get.

  19. Hi all My LS400 has required a lot of TLC so far, but the results are turning out to be great. So far, I have changed all four tyres, new break pads all around, DENSO Iridium spark plugs, Aisin water pump, Mitsuboshi timing belt, fan belt, NTN hydraulic pre-tensioner and bearings, K&N air filter, ShellUltra Helix ECT 5w-30 oil, Toyota OEM oil filter, Toyota OEM antifreeze/coolant, Toyota OEM break fluid. also discovered that A/C compressor wasn't working, luckily found one at Ebay removed from a Mark 4 which had done only 32k miles and got it done along with the timing belt, Yuasa 335 battery 95aH, and got my local carper shop to cut and whip new mats plus 4 wheel Hunter alignment by Alineyourcar in Dudley. Forgot to add engine hood struts, changed them too. As expected, I can feel the difference. Just came back from a 1307 mile trip to Liore Valley. The car used petrol worth £197.80, averaged 32 mpg with air-conditioning on all the time as temperatures were 30 deg plus. On the way back home, I got 513 miles from a single tank of fuel with 32 miles range to spare. We travel to Europe by car 2-3 times a year, and this has been our most comfortable and enjoyable trip so far. I want to thank everyone on this forum for their advice and contributions, saved me a lot of money and guided me in the right direction. Tarun

  21. The clock spring or squib ring appears to be the culprit. I can't imagine what Lexus would charge for one of these! Fortunately I've sourced one from Germany via ebay for £43 including delivery. It won't even be worth doing a tutorial on this as it must be so rare for it to fail. I've never had one fail in 43 years of motoring.

  22. Yes its just the 5 bulbs you get. The 5 sided bulbs are about £6.50 each if you buy them individually, and im not sure about the single ones. So you'd probably struggle to beat the price if you were only buying the exact quantity to do one set of dials. I've just finished fitting the bulbs, took about 20mins to do. Trickiest part is the trial and error of working out which way round the bulbs go in the holders, because they will only work one way round. And I must say I'm very impressed with it, mainly by the perfectly even light spread across the dials. I stared at it for a good minute and couldnt see any noticable light/dark patches between bulbs. :) Colourwise, they are a perfect white with no blue tint. Looks very nice against the yellow and red of the rest of the dials. And as for brightness, perfect. Bright enough that you go 'ooh, they look nice' but not so much that it draws your attention while driving.
