  1. True, OBDII will not throw a code for low or non existent fuel pressure, a quick test for the fuel pump is to open the engine diagnostic socket and place a jumper wire between +B and FP connections of the socket and then see if the car starts. Also on the passenger side fuel rail there is a pressure regulator connected to it at the rear, it looks like a little top hat with a pip in the top, if you do the above test this little pip should pop up if full fuel pressure is present. On the 1996 you will have to remove the engine cover to do this. The fuel filter as mentioned can is often overlooked as a service item and can become completely clogged. Regarding the replacement pump reliability, on ebay it does say "lifetime warranty" and for the cost compared with Lexus prices surely worth a try. Worse thing is a failed CPS would have thrown a code so why 2 supposedly professional outfits wrongly diagnosed a part costing £200.00 is beyond belief. My advice is to also find another garage who are experts instead of guessperts preferably a little further north :) If you can drive it 150 miles north I'll even take a look for you.

  2. Hello and welcome to the LOC. I've heard of problems with the power boot closure system before, if you have a search you may find the cure on the forums ( if I get the time I'll have a look for you) Regarding the windows just check the driver's over ride button hasn't been pushed in as this disables all the other windows, plenty of breakers around for a secondhand switch block which is probably the cause. Re the boot problem or trunk as the Americans call it. http://us.lexusownersclub.com/forums/topic/73214-power-liftgate-tailgate-problem-and-fix-with-pics/ The windows

  3. Hi Paul and welcome to the LOC, we are a friendly bunch and some of us even know how to pull them to bits and put them back together again, with of course the one bolt and washer left over. We recommend you spend a couple of mins looking over the rules of the LOC, we will be asking questions later I cant help with your present queries but I'm sure someone will be along ASAP. http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/terms-conditions/ Regards Mike.

  4. Well after several phone calls between us and a lot of searching by them, they have come up with a service history from another Lexus garage in Lincoln and also a major service invoice from September for £1220. It seems it had it all the time and couldn't be bothered to find it, I'm a happier man now and starting to enjoy the vehicle. Thanks for all your replies

  5. Toyota have been using proper engineered number plate fixings since at least the mid 90's. Just using a self-tapper into metal is or metal spring clips reminds me of my old Capri. :)

  9. I too had a noisy whining sound from the front of the car----solved it by getting the mother in law to sit in the back.

  10. The debate continues - here Jason owned a LS 460 and he has bought a LS 400! The mind boggles! Are the Ls 460's really not as good? Or are we just searching for nostalgia? Owning a LS 400, the hairs on the back of my neck tingled when I read Jason's comments! Took the LS 400 out for a spin last night .......... yes.... they are something special. I came out of McDonald's (can't afford a decent restaurant!) and the lights were shining on the alloys (though they are a bit corroded) - I thought it was a flashy Mercedes, then I realised it was mine! (Smug look - aka Jeremy Clarkson). Enjoy Jason .... compared to other cars costing that much, you have got a bargain!

  11. you know what really makes the difference? what makes this make/model stand out above the german companycarmarket? when driving it it feels just special, exclusive, different. when looking at it it just looks special, like a study made it into production, from every angle there is a different view when you take a friend for a spin you see them thinking, looking, trying to understand what is going on underneath the bonnet you like or loathe the looks, the grille the interior, dash. the Lexus is not mere traffic not just transport going from A to B it is a car that you have to discover, experience and every time i drive off i find it interesting, fun, i think of ways to improve performance, efficiency etc. even after 6k km i still discover new things it is my car, my Lexus i like driving it like watching it ( oh oh i hear violins playing maybe a bit over the top with this love letter haha)

  12. I've just fitted 4 Michelin Cross Climate tyres to my Mercedes, absolutely brilliant tyres, quiet as a mouse and no road rumble oranything, suspect they will go very nicely on the Lexus.

  13. rang the trader as an exercise to be told it had no probs with mot asked about the advisories on the suspension over the last few mots and was told it was nothing to worry about as it was an old problem that hasn't got worse (well thats good to know and I'm glad its cleared that up NOT) I'm always a bitty sus about traders who know for definite that a car is going to pass an mot when you ring and enquire then told it has no current mot but i will put 12 months on if you buy it or leave a deposit don't know how to combat dodgy mots and garages but there surely has to be something done still looking for a good ls

  14. Mines automatic with 106k miles and its chattering then cold in mornings, I think thats could be the oil in automatic gearbox needs changing but during my last service lexus told me its not changeable (for life oil). Still thinking need to change it anyway, not sure how hard it will be do myself?

  15. Hi 5 W 30 is the spec and if you changing the oil you could use semi synthetic or synthetic - if you are topping up you must be consistent. There is no reason to go to 10 W 40. The first number 5W is the cold (0C) viscosity and the second number is hight temp (100C) viscosity. You should use the manufacturer spec rather than your intuition. Why would you want thicker oil when it is cold? Also there are possible complications with the extra additives needed to make 40 weight oil perform at high temp. Have a read here for a resonable technical explanation - http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/ I use fully synthetic 5W30 the Lexus spec and backed up by the explanation in the link. Good luck Bren

  16. I use Asda fully synth 5-30, £20. Just a note on supermarket 'cheap' oils, opinion (& common sence) has it that these supermarket oils are made by the big oil companies anyway, they give the oil companies a place at both ends of the commercial market, forcourt & other high end outlets = higher profits from fewer unit sales, low end supermarkets = more sales for lower proffits per unit.
