  1. :D I think that's a bit like saying 'I could have taken out life insurance 10 years ago but since I didn't die I think the saving was worthwhile' Mike

  2. Now that is surely worthy of the Turner prize, it's almost artistic in a serious lack of servicing kind of way! I hope your engine oil filter is not a close cousin...

  4. I'm after an LS, although undecided on which model. Can afford a 460, but want best value rather than most toys/ newest model. If I went with a 400 it would have to be a mk4. Condition needs to be good, with clear evidence of a high standard of maintenance throughout the life of the car. I am based in Kent, and would hope not to travel hundreds of miles... Not in a rush, I have the next few months to find the right car. Pointers on buying welcome, as are any actual vehicles that might suit my needs! This will be my first venture into Lexus ownership...

  6. In a nutshell, yes that's it, but the options are endless really. I have an app installed that connects to the ECU, another one to give me satnav

  7. Equality if you didn't have a warranty you could have got the sliding pins replaced and glued the seal on the back of the light cluster back on. The AC fix probably would have been considerable less outside of the Lexus dealerships, all for less than the price of the warranty.

  8. I've installed a couple of Vais units, one in a GS and the other in a 400h. My 400h had an older nav unit so only the SL2i was compatible - it worked fine within the limitations of the product and having to use playlists, something that I believe the newer units don't suffer from. One annoying thing was that it uses the SCAN button to switch to a certain mode and unfortunately the UK vehicles don't have that button so that functionality wasn't available to me - again this may not be an issue for the unit you are looking at. Even with limitations, Vais units are without question the best AV accessories for Lexus vehicles - just a little expensive once you factor in shipping and import taxes.

  10. :D I think that's a bit like saying 'I could have taken out life insurance 10 years ago but since I didn't die I think the saving was worthwhile' Mike Life insurance ? ... not really a comparison, plus you missed the point that you'd be dead & couldn't spend the insurance money anyway ... lol ... and ... all the beer you could have bought with the premium's I have never had a warranty on any car I've owned, & most warranties tend to exclude Hybrid components anyway (apart from the Lexus one i think?) ... I only know 1 person who has ever had his money's worth out of a warranty..

  12. The alloy under where it's flaking will be corroded. You could clean it back as much as you can and repaint, but I wouldn't lacquer it (you won't be able to remove enough corrosion to stop it breaking through again - that needs sandblasting). I don't think it will last long but it would be a stop gap. The only long term solution is to get the wheels refurbished 'professionally' - ie at least some outfit with a bit of a track record and reasonable reviews for refurbing. Watch out for cowboys!

  13. The prices are definitely hardening as good ones do not come up for sale that often - people tend to keep them .... I wonder why? LOL!

  14. Best to take the lights out. You also get the opportunity to glue the big seal back on if it has come loose, this will stop water getting into the lights.

  17. Don't know if I'm being way too picky in my search for an LS400, but this one seems a bit overpriced IMO. Why mention the boot seal and brakes done around 3 years ago? I'd want to know more about the last 3 years, which have been glossed over a bit. I saw another Mk IV up for sale recently for half the price - It was a bit tatty but had a recent cambelt and loads of work done, to me it's more important that the owner has spent the money on important mechicanical work than tacky V8 badges. Maybe I'm wrong and being too harsh, but these are expensive cars to fix if something goes wrong, and considering he's not willing to budge on price, it would have been nice to include more detail about the services and any mechnical work, MOT advisorys etc..

  18. Did the brake pads require replacement as a result of the seized caliper? If so, they should have been covered under the extended warranty. http://www.lexus.co.uk/img/Terms-and-Conditions-Lexus-Extended-Warranty-for-Vehicle_tcm880-1309714.pdf says: "4.3 Where the Mechanical or Electrical Failure of a Protected Part directly causes damage to another part of the Protected Vehicle (which is not a Protected Part) when the Protected Vehicle is in a Specified Territory during the Warranty Period, then We will pay for the cost of replacing or repairing that other part in addition to the cost of replacing or repairing the Protected Part subject to the Repair Limit, provided that the cost of such repairs are reasonable."

  19. I believe that if they sell you the warranty (which manchester did) then they should honour any repairs under the warranty without question. Any issues they have between dealerships and warranty issuer should be resolved internally without dragging me into the middle of it. It looks unprofessional and customers should not be subjected to it. I always manage to get a courtesy car. I do book well ahead. At least a week ahead. Also possible that they try and keep me sweet as they seem desperate to upgrade me to a 450 lol!!!

  20. Yes, DC176K looks a good bet if the rubber in the 13mm hole will stretch enough. If it does not stretch enough, it might be possible to make the hole a bit bigger by using a round file to file a bit of the rubber off. I managed to do this with a dust boot cover for a brake wheel cylinder that was just too tight a fit to go over the end of the piston.

  21. Thanks, Stuart. I don't think it should make any difference whether the gaiter is concertina style or not. As you say, the part does not compress. So long as the gaiter covers the joint to prevent the ingress of water, dirt etc, it should be fine. How long it will last is down the quality of the rubber, or lack of it, and only time will tell. Gaiters can last a long time - the ones on the track rod ends on my Armstrong Siddeley Sapphire have not needed replacing in the 28 years I have owned the car and the car had been laid up for 10 years before I bought it, so the gaiters are probably 40+ years old!

  22. It's a bit late for you now but I would have advised a second opinion on anything done at Hull Lexus. I know of a 350 that they charged over 3k to replace timing chain, 12 months later there is oil leaking from the timing chain cover and they are quoting over 2k to replace the cover. To my mind if they were the ones replacing the chain which involved replacing/sealing the cover and it later leaks they should be willing to cover at least some of the costs but they apparently didnt want to know. That attitude despite it being serviced by them since new and having over £16k worth of bills from Lexus Hull over the 8/9 years they had been servicing it. If thats a representation of customer loyalty it stinks. I am less than 30 miles from Hull but travel to Lexus Sheffield for any work I need doing which really shouldnt be necessary if I felt Hull were a good dealership I felt happy to trust.

  25. Hopefully you are alone Philip, at least those are my thoughts anyway. Without the cameras, the scumbags will get away with anything and everything on a regular basis. Did you actually read the detail of my original post? People jump red lights everyday, I don't get overly concerned by that, just a little irritated but, when a driver actually pulls out from behind me in stationary traffic waiting at a red light, and then proceeds across the junction, then I'm afraid that that takes the biscuit! I wonder what your thoughts would have been had you have been making a left turn at those lights, and you had had a head-on collision with a car that was on your side of the road (which you would not have expected at a light controlled junction), as this driver would have been. Would you not have been thankful that someone was able produce crystal clear evidence that shows that he was at fault and driving dangerously? Equally, there may have been a pedestrian who saw that the lights had changed to red and the first car in the line had stopped, and so he assumes it is safe to cross, but no, some idiot pulls out from that line of traffic and he has to jump out of the way, or worse still gets mown down! What if that pedestrian was a member of your family? Sorry but I am a fan of CCTV, the more the better as far as I am concerned. I have first hand experience of shoplifters taking my profits away. My thoughts are that if you can't abide by the rules of society then you should be removed from it until such time as you learn respect for others and their property, but that's another story.
