  2. Just come back from holiday in USA . Flew into Los Angleses then up Pacific Highway to Oregon. I have never seen so many Lexus's. Every other car seemed to be a Lexus of some type, and there are literally hundreds of mainly LS 400's, obviously in daily use. They are a massively popular car over there and you can see they were obviously built for the American market. It was a delight to experience.

  3. I didn't spot it being a cat d first time round, my mistake. Actually, I don't see it as a problem as long as there's evidence of the original damage. My other car was written off 3 years ago but it got repaired and I still use it. I was aware that Lexus only replace the belt, but it's still a good price. If you include the water pump etc some main dealers will do it for around £500. I was quoted that by an independent. The Gumtree car is still a good buy I think, if it passes a good going over that is.

  6. They look like Mazda RX8 wheels. regarding cam belt change: Emailed seller and last belt change was on 15-08-2003 at 58,500 miles!! 2 years overdue Sellers argument was that on the 1st of May the car had been fully serviced and a 71-point check had been carried out by.......wait for it.........Halfords!!!! I wouldn't even trust Halfords to inflate my tyre.

  7. I picked up my 2005 Gs300 SE-L yesterday and very pleased with it! Anyway a couple of small niggles that need ironing out to make it 100%, one being a slight knocking noise from the passenger side rear wheel/suspension. It sounds like possibly a bush could be worn / tired. The car does have a set of BC Racing Coilovers which probably hasn't helped the life of the bushes. Does anyone have a diagram of what bushes are at the back and where the knocking could be coming from, I don't think it is a top mount as it sounds too 'low' but on the other hand it only happens when going over rough surfaces / bumps so may well be that. Thanks

  9. How sad, I think he needs his drugs and living on the other side of the pond hasn't helped him. Not too many agreed with him either. Mike.

  10. Scotland to Cornwall not 1 LS. Was a lovely drive. Very comfy and quiet. Quite fun around the twisty coastal roads. Not so much fun trying to pass oncoming traffic on the single track roads. V8 fantastic though. Some very steep hills no problem whatsoever. Only issue I had was trying to reverse on gras up a hill. No traction. A couple of mats and a shove from my lads soon sorted that. Lost the number plate in a bush though.

  11. Yes, we've mostly decided it's not that good, even taking the usual discrepancy with the manufacturers official figures into account.

  14. Thanks for the advance. I was thinking a low mileage example would be the way to go but they seem to command such a premium and there are fewer of them around. I suppose certain things like bushings will degrade over time regardless of use. I'd prefer a car that had been used daily but had been lovingly looked after over something that has just sat on someone's drive being neglected. Difficult to tell them apart sometimes though especially if buying from a dealer.

  15. Good afternoon gents, I've been a lurker on the forums for a few weeks now whilst reading up on the LS400 and, please don't hate me, but I am the purchaser of the aforementioned car! It didn't have an MOT when the deal was struck, but indeed did go straight through the test, requiring just a bulb. It has found a good home, and was not purchased just to MOT and flip on. It is in great order, and was indeed owned by the same family from new - an original sales invoice was even included in the paperwork. I hope to become a regular on the forum, and I'll start a separate thread to update the works taking place. I don't anticipate much in all honesty, a full service is on the cards for next week followed by a wheel refurb and bodywork detailing :) The numberplate didn't come with the car and was retained by the family so it is currently sitting on a K plate. I did look into it prior to viewing the car and retail price was around the £5k mark so I would have thought even the likes of RegTransfers would have paid £2.5k for it. Mark

  16. I don't know how Halfords get away with what they do. How can one of their staff carry out a 71 point check on a car as complex as an LS400? They should stick to selling bikes and chamois leathers....and while they're at it, training their staff to have some manners and learn about the importance of customer relations! It seems to be back on Gumtree and has now graduated to a cat D!

  19. Also check everything is fitted back securely, no air leaks etc. check all wiring nearby in case something is disconnected.

  20. It is apparently unwise to clean the MAF or KVAM on a first gen LS with solvent cleaners they are easily ruined ,I have used a gentle waft of compressed air with no ill effects . The later models have a different MAF that can be cleaned as normal , it is also unwise to fit K an N type air filters to first gens as the oil from them can also cause problems . As Mark says if you didnt have the symptoms before the cleaning it is most likely to be either some debris in the throttle body or a messed up MAF/KVAM . Lets hope it is something simple to fix .

  23. Small pit villages must attract LSs - we live in a old pit village and there are two LSs within a quarter of a mile of our house. One is a 2005 LS430 several houses further down our road (the person living there previously had a 2001 LS430 before he bought the 2005 car) and the other is a 1996 LS400 owned by a person who lives on the main road going through the village.

  24. As Malc has said, here on the Continent the LS is a rare beast indeed. In the last 2 years I have seen one other 460 and a 400. I was in a bar the other day with some friends, who are all BMW owners. The conversation was all about which model and what extras they had. They asked me about the equipment on mine. I just smiled smugly and said that I had a Lexus LS - and there are no extras.......it comes complete :)

  25. Loathecliff Kwikfit ATS and that ilk wont look for or repair A/C faults. You need an independent A/C fitter who will vacuum the system and check for leaks using an ultra violet light. The Acre You have replacement pipes (flexies) so it is possible that your system has been open to the air and water/moisture has got in and the refrigerant has frozen this water so creating a blockage/partial blockage
