  1. Back in September 2001 I was very excited to take delivery of a brand new IS200. For a twenty-three year old, not yet on the property ladder, it seemed a rather extravagant purchase, but seeing it there on the forecourt--with just 4 miles on the odometer--I was looking forward to it serving me well for many years. Well, thirteen years later I have exactly zero regrets about making that purchase. Yesterday the odometer rolled over 300,000 miles and the car hasn't let me down once. Sure, the cost of the petrol required to travel that distance has far exceeded the original cost of the car, but other than that it's been extremely reasonable to run and has had absolutely minimal problems. It's also remained both fun and comfortable to drive. If only all cars were as good as this :)

  3. I've still got mixed feelings about the LS400 I bought without inspection for £800. The Dealer parts for a cambelt topped £500 and didn't give me the parts found on a complete set you see on ebay US where there are paper gaskets and rubber o rings for under £200 Lexus failed to quote or supply the necessary o rings costing me a week in delayed fitting. Also expect a £300 min for the cost of replacing. So spend £800 again just to satisfy yourself the cambelt is good (which mine appeared to be) and that the water pump is not starting to leak (which mine appeared to be!) Important things like aircon work, but LED display read out has disappeared. £100 to replace plus a bit of soldering skill needed. Front driver seat fails to go back one side and there is a fix mentioned on this forum - when I can get around to it. I don't like the fact that the car seats are rather on the small side and there isnt a great deal of headroom. Static grabs my hair. I was used to Merc S Class larger seats and a lower profile. Also little niggly things such as no catch felt between seats and central console. My Cleo debit card slipped down the passenger side after paying at a peage around midnight and I couldn't get it out until I got home as the car was rammed with holiday stuff - most annoying. Small change goes the same way. Don't like the fact that I have to hand pull the wing mirrors out. I miss the soft close doors of the Merc. Can't open the boot internally if the engine is running I find irritiatiing. BTW expect a lot of work if you have exhausts blowing at the gaskets by the Lambda probes. (MOT fail) A pair of gaskets costs £20. The bolts are undo-able usually as the heads rust away, so may require burning off and therefore carpet lifting etc. Even though I have had this done and it passed the MOT I seem to get a whiff of exhaust when the car door is open and I don't know why. Perhaps this is due to having two exhaust pipes as opposed to a double on the opposite side on the Merc? OK So ina way I miss the size of the Merc (LWB) but having just returned from France after 1300 miles the Lexus performed well and so I'm not too disappointed I made the change. Oh, I should also mention that Brakes required complete overhaul as were positively dangerous imo and with new discs and pads and pins and springs they bite like the devil. So now no complaints and after all these are service items. I would add that an old S Class has its faults rust being a major one. Old Cars what should I expect? Fact is that they are still a bargain for what they cost and give you luxury motoring without the headache of Stealership servicing costs.

  5. The HG issue is primarily a Diesel engine problem relating to the Lexus IS. The main issue involves the 220d. The modified 200d with lower hp and road tax should not suffer the HG issue...at least that is what Lexus claim.

  6. Don't think so. I've got a similar (if not identical) system in my GS, and had to get used to putting it in "Park" before switching it off.
