  1. ....is to get back in the saddle of another LS400. Of the 62 cars I've owned, only twice have I cried when they went. One was my old 1980 Bedford CF 'Advantura' motorhome, the other of course was the LS. Would like to stick to a MK3,but may be tempted by a MK4. We'll see!.

  2. Hello and welcme to the LOC. If you don't mind me saying so why would you want to change a car you have had for 7 years, appears reliable and just because you have a charging problem you are thinking of replacing it? How long has the battery been on the car? How did your mechanic check the charge rate of the alternator? Either way a battery/alternator/both would probably be the best option. A common killer of the early LS400 alternator is a leaking Power steering pump reservoir O ring costing a few pounds.

  4. Hi there. To test whether your alternator is definitely failing, do this; get the car started, either via a jump start or a charged -up battery and then switch on all the electrics you can find i.e. full headlights, heater blower, rear demister, interior lights, etc. and leave a good long while like this. Then try to notice if there is any considerable and continuous dimming of any lights taking place. If there is, your alternator is on the way out. If not, you have a faulty discharging battery and your alternator is fine.

  5. Upon inserting a new disk the sat-nav checks the disk for a new firmware release if the firmware is later than the one you have a loading firmware screen will appear (this is obvious). If the disk is not genuine then an old firmware will be present as newer firmware checks the disk is not a copy and fails to work. Try reinserting the disk to force a check. 06/07 to E18 defiantly should force an update. Last resort is to remove power to the sat-nav via fuse or battery disconnect, note this will wipe any stored settings and updates to the firmware so after 30 seconds reconnect and this should force an update to whatever firmware is on the new disk. The I Agree screen can't be removed however E18 firmware will have the ability to set a destination on the move. Hope that helps.

  6. A clutch wont burn out a dmf any more than it will burn out a ss (solid state/one piece/standard) flywheel. The only way i have ever seen a flywheel burn out is due to continued driving whilst the clutch is slipping/worn out or driving like an idiot slipping the clutch therefore causing heat the flywheel wasnt designed for. I Know luc now do a ss flywheel to replace most dmf as they appear to have been failing at high miles. Although i wouldnt recomend fitting one. I have fitted a few on transits with no ill effects up to now they are certainly cheaper and the ford dmf seems to be failing at 60k miles. I have heard horror stories within the trade of the vag group dmf failing on high mileage skodas. Usually taxis, when a dfm is replaced with a ss on these they appear to mess with the varmonics of the engine and snap the crank shafts. this information was given to me by luc themselves at a recent seminar on the dsg gearbox and how to fit/change/and service the clutches on these. Ok back to the lexus as i mentioned on my previous post my lexus doesnt have a dmf, i believe some were fitted with them but i have no reason why one would be needed on a car with so little torque the clutch is perfectly capable of taking up the torque. Mine has doen 175.000 with out a dmf and managed just fine.
