  1. Anyone else using this? Just found it in app store and available for android. AA roadwatch built in, map tells you where you are in case of breakdown. Has reminders for car insurance, road tax, MOT, ect. Handy little freebie. Wait for page to load and scroll to bottom. http://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/warranties-repair/#/RoadsideAssistance

  2. I just bought a 2013 ex demo advance, obviously the dealer had tried to sell me a protection package inc keys, smart, tyres & alloys and G3 glass coat. I am interested in GAP cover, is it worth getting it from Lexus or looking elsewhere? Do I need anything else? Thanks in advance

  4. The point of my post was that I have had to spend a fair amount of money on a car that originally cost in excess of £58k...or there abouts. I didn't mind that ! I actually expected to have to be prepared to fork out for expensive parts for an expensive car! Now, taking the personal emotions out whether it,s 400 or 430...my reason was to warn people of buying a car that could lead them to expensive repairs! I have definitely enjoyed and will continue to enjoy driving the 430 ( not knowing what it's like to drive ls400 ) and am not really that bothered whether it's the best or worst ever made by Toyota. What I am fast becoming aware of is that next time I see a 400 mk 4 I should grab it ...especially if it has no reversing camera and no air suspension!

  6. Shiner, the 430 does seem to be more problematic than the 400 judging from what various owners say. The 400 mk 4 is widely recognised as the best Lexus model ever made. A friend of mine has just forked out £6,000 recently on repairs to her 9 year old B.M.Troubleyou X5. (Gearbox failure and A/C repairs). Also, my brother has just spent £3,000 on his '04 Mercedes Spends, (timing chain failure/ head repairs), and he still has other problems to sort out on it. To be fair though, it has done 180,000 miles. Our 400's are getting on a bit now so owners must expect to pay out on the inevitable repairs coming their way. But, until then, we'll enjoy driving the best Lexus ever made. They certainly seem to have fewer problems overall.

  7. Try Direct Gap: www.directgap.co.uk I found them to give clear terms on the insurance and they seemed efficient when I took out the cover. They were very considerably cheaper than the cover offered by my Lexus Dealer. However, obviously, I have not had had to make a claim so I don't know how they are on claims! Oh also don't forget to find out whether you are covered for the first twelve months under your ordinary motor insurance policy. I discovered that my first year was already covered and Direct Gap were great for delaying the start of their policy by a year and charging me a lower premium accordingly. SM

  8. got caught out exactly the same when I first got the SC,car stood for about 6 weeks ,just started it once a week but battery finally went totally flat and I mean FLAT. Luckily I keep a spare battery charged up in the garage and I put it in and the car was fine. As your battery is fairly new it should charge up again if the garage put it on a low charge for a couple of days. The chances of it being your alternator are close to zero. I am afraid you have found out the hard way this is the Achilles heel of these cars.If you leave them for more than a week the battery drain means you could have a non starter. I now disconnect the battery if the car stands for more than 3 days, its a pain in the .... but I don't have any more flat battery problems.

  9. Have spoken with Lexus who say the recall for the air con grommet didn't apply to our car, so they suggest we take it to the nearest dealer, but they did say that if the dealer thought there was a problem that warranted a recall that they would liaise with Lexus Head Office. Found the last part a bit confusing but will let you know the outcome. Thanks for being so welcoming!

  10. Interesting posts, I paid a bit more than the one mentioned here, but that was my fault as I didnt realise a "Lexus" could be that reasonable, even if it was 16 years old! Could have probably haggled the price a bit. With only 97000 on the clock I didn't hesitate. I've learnt to keep away from Lexus dealers when it comes to spares (especially exhausts). I love driving my car, wouldn't want change it except Maybe for a new one! Lol. Must also admit that I was surprised when it came to insurance. Was expecting some silly quotes, but, in the end it worked out £100 more than my previous insurance, (for twice the car. Lol)

  11. I paid 600 for "Jubilee" (pronounced "jubbly"). 130k, and a bit battered on the corners. (75 y/o previous owner :( ) When I was looking, most were around 1200, so the car in the OP is on the cheap side, and had I still been looking, I would have certainly gone to look at it - and probablty bought.

  15. That's what i paid for my gs Stuart, mine has done 115k, In my opinion they are a bargain. I dont regret buying ours in the least. The fuel consumption is on a par with the is200 we had.

  17. I had mind done by Autoglass a months ago as well. I got a lexus label one because the IS300 had the front heated screen, the first time round Autoglass had the Pilkington windscreen but this didn't have the heating element. To be honest Autoglass tech was top rated, he really covered every exposed metal, plastic surface he could find before working on the windscreen. He said normally he doesn't bothered but he got a soft spot for the IS hence taking extra care. Just follow the aftercare instructions Autoglass give and you will be fine, but I would hose the edge of the glass down after 1 week of installation just to check for leaks, and drive it on the motorway to hear any wind noise.

  19. But not quite so simple ....... there are other threads here about this AND a simple concensus was that PWR does seem to give slightly improved fuel economy ............ economy of course is a misnomer on a 4ltr !!!! Malc

  20. The main selling point for the Lexus ls400 when it first hit the American market was its promised reliability, as this became apparent in early sales the brand quickly gained market share over Mercedes and the upmarket American Brands because at the time there were huge issues with American automobile standards of build and confidence in the product. The Mercedes and Jaguar were expensive but in comparison were better but nothing like as good both in price and product as the Lexus. The problem with the LS430 was it had to match or better the benchmark that the 400 had set , unfortunatly it failed miserably. The reasons are now clear but at the time they were developing the 460 and at the same time trying not to lose the sedan market share they had built with the 400.So they went a step too far to quickly putting untried additions and technologies onto a 13 year old concept. I had also set my sights on a 430 midway through my 16 years ownership of the 400 but as I learned more and more of the failures I realised that the best place to be was where I was and sought out a Mark 4 it took 4 years but I did get was at the time the bargain of the century so it was worth the wait.

  21. I used Redex on my 7 series and I have to be honest it has made a difference, the car starts a lot better from cold, idles better as the car was pinking. In terms of mpg, I can't comment on that at the moment. I was going to get both cars Terracleaned as I saw this on Wheeler Dealers and it made a difference to the car they were working on. These things can't hurt 13 year old cars.

  27. Not had one fitted to the 220 but had one fitted on the 250 and no where near Dundee but about 250 miles away in Cheshire. Cost was £450 for a s/s cat back system centre piece and twin back boxes. quality of work was good. A bit noisy at first at low speed but it is quietening down now after I am guessing its sooting up a bit. I have learnt that the ss exhausts are noisier than stock, most noticeable in the cabin but it will quieten down with use (usually after approx. 1-2000 miles). It actually sounds very good outside, low rumble. The exhaust for this car is only available from Lexus - sit down before you read the replacement cost for the system Centre piece = £1700 Twin back box = £700 Its a "consumable" item that IS at some point going to fail - mine went at 70k miles and was 6 years old. Its not something I would mess with due to the cost of replacement if anything went wrong but that's just me. I had no choice as mine had failed and I had nothing to lose.

  31. Congratulations! What a beautiful baby. As a grey haired wrinkly can I just say, enjoy every minute because time just flies by so quickly, no sooner are they into their first school uniform they then seem to be 18 before you know it. Mine are well into their forties now and the grandkids are knocking along at a brisk pace too. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. I've said it on here before, the best smell in the world is your baby having just had a bath!

  32. I believe that the older models did have this problem, however, it was actually rectified in the newer model years. However, I still dont believe that it is the finish of the wheels that is defective, but the products used on the wheel. Acidic wheel cleaners get into cracks in the paint and bubble them up. No finish, be it Bentley or Nissan would be able to cope when the car is not washed for 3 months.

  33. I agree with noby. It was about average mpg compared to equiv vehicles of its year and your living in a anti car culture in the UK unfortunatly. The bottom line is it can be frustrating for some. Luckily for me fuel economy isnt a priority. But for the latter i couldnt recommend the IS. So get a diesel or a modern petrol.

  34. I've got three sets of rims for the Elise, garage looks like kwik fit! Summer, winter and track. The family barge just has winter or summer tyres and we swap them over on the same rims. Not sure on isf, as the Elise winters are one season old so its a large expense to get another set. Or maybe sell the Elise ones...

  36. I think with a car like the IS it does come down to why did you buy one, how and what do you use it for. The fuel economy yes is sometimes a bug bear, but we use ours for short local journeys so I don't expect great economy, especially as mine is the auto, but I love the luxury and refinement. (Also the better half has a heavy right foot, not kidding....) Having said that, I had to go up North for a family funeral 215 miles one way. We would normally take my other car which is a BMW 728i, unfortunately I was not able to use the BMW due to a belt tensioner pulley disintegrating. Both my BMW and IS are the same age 13 years old. A full tank in the BMW costs me over £120+ and I use approx. just under half a tank to get there and that is at a fast speed if you know what I mean approx 2hrs 35mins. Now the IS did the same journey up at a quick speed not a fast speed, but above average and did it in just under half a tank and 3hrs. The BMW has a 90 litre tank, just under 300bhp and a 5 speed auto. On the return journey in the IS I was going very fast I did the return journey in the IS in 2hours 35mins. It used just over half tank. Which car is more economical? I was very surprised by the IS. I love these cars, I think they will become a future classic. Like I
