My radio is losing bits of its display intemittently. I have heard that this is a "Lexus problem" (I read it is somethingg to look for when buying a 2nd hand Lex). But has anyone found a solution other than an expensive replacement of the radio?

Hi pak,

The short answer is NO!! ... This is an inherrent problem with Liquid Crystal Displays. With age they will deteriorate and once the polarising crystals leak from their proper place it gives the effect of 'missing' segments. This situation is usually accelerated if the display is subject to a hostile environment (i.e. the interior of a vehicle on a sunny day!!) or a physical shock etc.

I'm afraid the only options are either a replacement unit or... If you can get hold of a secondhand scrap unit (who's display is working) and you have a steady hand and a low wattage soldering iron you may be able to swap over the display itself but there are no guarentees and the heat from the iron may well do damage to the display as you remove it !!

Good luck

Regards

The Editor

I used to get this in my Veedub on the trip computer display - as The Editor put, on sunny days.

I just put up with it to be true

The best and easiest fix is to order a new LCD display unit complete with the PCB and ribbon cable.

This for a 98 GS300 European version (with RDS and TA).

If you pull out the whole ashtray assembly, http://www.carstereohelp.com/stereoremovalLexusGS300Str.htm twist your neck under and look at the bottom of the radio, you should see the code KEX-8176ZT on the bottom of the radio. If this is the code you need to order from a Pioneer parts distributer code CWM4932.

This is the complete glass/cable/PCB assembly. It cost me €105 delivered (Ireland) from http://www.avi.ie/ - 3 days delivery time

This only takes 15 mins to replace, all you need is a 10mm socket (from tool kit in boot), a large and small philips screwdriver - nothing else. No soldering/wiring required!

(If your radio is non-european and has the code KEX-8076ZT the part is CWM4931 - double check this before you order!)

In the UK you can get this part from http://www.semenedis.com/
