The admins are trying to resolve the on-going performance issues with this site and by removing the names it reduces the server load.

It was actually removed to make the site run quicker for members who view it ........

It's one less query the server has to run, making it slightly faster ......... ! (so sayeth Mt Mcnally )

Have to agree on that note, i'm a moderator on the celica-club and post counter causes no end of trouble, like you say ,the site should run better without them :) .
