New Brake Pads/discs

I had horrendous dust issues with my OEM set up, so went all out on new discs and pads. These have much better stopping power than the originals, that is pretty guaranteed. Long term evaluation will take a bit longer. I don't expect to be getting new discs/pads again as I am eying up a F next year.

nothing noticeable, apart from the initial install and first milage with them on.

For yellow stuffs approx 100gbp for front and back each. Mtec blacks about 90 each, front /back. Labour about 140 I paid for full install and replinish brake fluid.

I bought full OEM set from Lexus Edinburgh, front vented discs and pads for £138.95 and rear solid discs and pads for £119.95 + £10 postage. Total £268.90. I changed them myself and did a full brake fluid flush with Shell DOT 4 ESP. When front pads wear out, I will buy the low dust versions from america which i've read very good reviews about.

Mine are vented front and back, the rear ones on mine were vented. Some 250s have vented rears some have solid, the vented are 310mm.

Ordered new Brake disc and pads from Lexus edinburgh... Going for the vented disc again.

Looking to try my 1st attempt at changing them myself.

What anti-squeal / lubricant do you recommend?

Yeah i ordered via eBay store.

Initially ordered the disc without realising the difference between the solid and vented disc until Laurie (Lexus Part Department) asked for the car reg then he informed my cars has solid at front and vented at back... I then took a look at the car and found both front and back were vented.

My plans was to have them shipped as i wouldn't have time to go down and pick them up this week.

Initially i paid £250 + £20 shipping.... Front Solid and Rear vented + Pads for both front and back

But once i realised i wanted both front and rear vented and that i would just pick them up on saturday, they gave me them for the price i already paid and i agreed to pick them up (lexus edinburgh is less than 15mins drive) and they open till 12pm on saturday.

That's strange - the rears were changed from solid to vented during 2007 production, so it's expected to need the reg/chassis no for them. But solid at the front? Never heard of that - has anyone else got solid discs at the front?

(BTW - it's not an owner choice - you have to fit what was used in production as far as the solid/vented thing goes - the calipers are different (unless you want to change the calipers, too, of course))

As John said, never heard of solid discs at the front, the ones before 2007 had solid rear discs. Always best to check with your reg and chassis number.

In regards to the anti-squeal lubricant, i use a product by Pagid/Mintex (Same Company) called Cera-Tec Brake Lube. You can get a tube from EuroCarParts for under £4. It works great and doesn't contain copper. I don't like the old school copper grease method. Ive always used this and never had even the slightest bit of brake squeal.

Also, everytime I work on my brakes, I always re-lubricate my slider pins with genuine Toyota Rubber Grease (slightly more expensive) but prefer the Toyota rubber grease. This is what Lexus use to lubricate the slider pins.

mine is a 07MY and it has both vented front and rear.

any idea how much a local indie will charge for changing brake disk/pads if i order from Lexus eBay store

Sorry guys i misinterpreted the email the email from Laurie.

I originally ordered solid front and back.

He said that when he looks at the car specs for my car reg it states the rear are to be vented so they will send vented out.

This was when i realised my car had vented front and back.

The rubber grease is around £10 and comes in a toothpaste sized tube.

It has a shelf life stated on the tube so make sure its in date but why this should matter I don't know as its not hygroscopic. I have had mine a while and I have just checked and its just out of date but its fine.

i have a question guys,

The front disks/pads are almost gone, the disk is definitely lipped, so talked to couple of Lexus dealers.

they both quoted 570 for both rear/front disk/pad change.

My car is IS250 but still in lexus warranty, so if i go the eBay route and order the parts and get it fitted outside.

Will it void my lexus warranty.

I am assuming the local workshop guys can change both for 100-150 and eBay cost of parts will be around 270.

Please advise what should i do? and if you know someone experienced guy for this job in london area, please share the contact details.

I wont be doing it myself as i dont have the tools otherwise would have done it probably and dont want a rookie guy to mess it as well so someone experienced/VFM is needed.

I am actually quite surprised cause £570 sounds too reasonable for a Lexus dealer :)

Seriously though, I changed my own discs and pads after my warranty started and it was fine. The warranty only requires that they are in good condition and work as intended.

Having said that, perhaps you should ask how much just the parts from the dealer are? Would probably be preferable to getting the stuff off eBay.

It should be half the main dealer cost to source the parts and change these yourself - there are a lot of good manufacturers out there. Try the Lexus dealers on eBay (Sheffield / Edinburgh) for oem parts.

You don't need specialist tools to do the change and I would recommend you do the work yourself as it would be handy to know how to grease the slide pins which is a requirement on these cars on at least an annual basis. If you don't want to do it yourself then ensure you ask the garage to grease them at your annual MOT but make sure they use the correct grease.

There's a "how to" on the how to section regarding changing discs and pads. Takes about 45 minutes to do the fronts and maybe a bit longer for the rears

I'm surprised at 2 things:

1. Some say the OEM brakes are not great and aftermarket ones are better. I have the 2010 IS250 F Sport and the braking power (OEM) is way better than my CTR with aftermarket pads (stoptech). Maybe the brakes were uprated/changed on mine with the changes in 2010?

2. The brake discs on some IS250 were drilled/vents? I'm sure my discs are solid all round.

The 'solid' bit doesn't apply to the disc faces - vented discs are kind of two discs stuck together with air vents in between. The actual faces may be unbroken or drilled, dimpled or grooved or a mixture of these (my MTEC discs are grooved and drilled). Solid discs are just one disc, plain and simple.

Virtually all cars have vented front disc brakes these days - even my wife's Seat Mii. But many cars have drum rear brakes or solid rear discs - ie just one disc - that's what IS250s had until sometime in 2007. Then they changed the rear discs to vented (with plain faces, like the oem fronts)
