Is220D White Smoke And Engine Replacement

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and a new owner of a Lexus IS220d SE 07 reg. I am hoping someone can help me so all help will be greatly appreciated.

I have had my Lexus for about two weeks now, it has 96k mileage and it drives nice apart from the white smoke issue i am having.

Whilst driving thick white smoke comes out of the exhaust every hour or so of driving, the smoke lasts for about 5 minutes and then stops. It is definately not steam and i have driven for three hours straight with the white smoke issue.

There is no power loss what so ever and the coolant is not droping, i have checked the coolant tank and there is no traces of oil, i have also checked the oil cap and there is no trace of white residue. There are no error lights on and since owning the car i have encountered any major issues.

Could this be a possible head gasket issue?

Assuming the worst case scenario and the head gasket is on its way, i have read several posts where Lexus have refused to replace an engine based on the service records. The car i have purchased came with no service book, however it did come with invoices for services that have been carried out on the car over the years with the registration recorded on invoice. Most of the services have been carried at Motorsave, with one service carried out at Nationwide and one at a local VAT registered garage.

Would Lexus accept the invoices and service carried out at a VAT registered garage as acceptable services and replace the engine.

This is my first ever Lexus and i am extremely worried i have been conned into buying this.

Hello and welcome to the LOC.

I think Lexus extended the engine issue warranty to 7 years/107,000 miles providing it had a FSH and mostly Lexus SH but it may be worth contacting your local dealer to enquire if you would be covered.

It does sound like a jamming EGR valve to me though, there is a good tutorial on Youtube regarding removal and cleaning it.

At first i thought it may have been the egr valve, however looking through my invoices, the egr valve was changed on the car two years ago. I will look at the you tube videos and try cleaning the egr valve, it may solve the problem thank you.

Assuming the warranty is based on which ever comes first, my car is an 07 reg which would mean the warranty no longer applies as it has been over 7 years?

I did want to purchase the lexus care extended warranty, i have had a quick read through of the terms and conditions and it seems the same applies in regards to the services, do you have to have had dealer services in order to take out the extended warranty?

Mine's a petrol, can't help with your diesel problem sorry.

I have been accepted to the Lexus extended warranty and my vehicle has first five stamps with Lexus and the last two with an independent Jaguar specialist. Hope this helps.

I have the same issue with mine. In my case it is down to the fifth injector sticking open and feeding to much fuel through creating the white unburned smoke.

Would Lexus accept the invoices and service carried out at a VAT registered garage as acceptable services and replace the engine.

What i was told by lexus leicester was as long as the vehicle was serviced at a garage which was VAT registered and they used genuine parts then the car qualifyed for the goodwill warranty. I had 6 lexus stamps and 3 stamps from independent garage which was VAT registered.

If in your case you missed out on the 7 year warranty i would just take out lexus care extended warranty for 2 years inc breakdown @ £795(10 direct debit payments of £79.50). The only problem i see is if you go down the route of asking local Lexus garage to repair vehicle under the goodwill 7 year warranty and if they decline then you will not qualify for repairs even if you buy lexus care extended warranty as the problem or fault was there prior to taking out the policy. Your best bet is to get a minor serviced done by lexus £159 (oil +oil filter change) this is just to build a rapor with your local lexus dealer ;) and then just ask service dept you want to take warranty out for your vehicle. If you not got a service book i would get a replacement and try to chase dealers where previous owners have had their service done. I recall doing this many years ago when i had a Nissan Almera GTi. I would telephone dealers prior to posting service book with self address enevlope included to have it stamped & returned when my vehicle only came with invoices/reciepts.

With the extended warranty itself, if for example i took my car to lexus for repair for an issue i was having and this issue was not covered by the warranty, would lexus charge me for hours they spent inspecting my car? Lexus would only charge for diagnostic investigation i think it's about £90 inc vat. You need confirm this with them. The lexus extended care warranty is quiet comprehensive compared to other third party policies. The reason i took it out with lexus is when it comes to claims it's a lot less hassle as oppose to third party paying out for claims.. read some horror stories on the web with likes of warrantydirect.

Its from the date of first registeration in your case march 2007. So i would take all your service records ie invoices/reciepts etc..to lexus and put a case forward to the service manager regarding replacement of engine..if that is indeed the problem. They will do a quick gas test to see if HG has gone or not.

Any good garage can test for HGF by a compression check, pressure check and also sniffing the air in the coolant expansion tank with the MOT emissions probe to test for combustion gases in the coolant.

Even though it's nly 2 years since the EGR valve was changed check this 1st as they do seem to clog up quickly, also depends on how the car is driven and where,all diesels need a good long motorway run regularly to keep both the EGR and DPF happy.

Could also be a software issue with the DPF regeneration?

Hi,

An update since my last post.

I am still having problems with the white smoke issue from the exhaust. I have the egr valve looked at and all is fine, i have had a head gasket test and all is fine.

I have noticed white smoke coming from the engine bay (oil compartment) and white smoke coming out of the dip stick hole once the engine has warmed up.

Does anyone have any solutions?

You could be getting diesel in your engine oil/sump ??

My lexus is220d  has started giving this white smoke issue, and reading the diagnosis here has any one able to fix this issue

On my 3rd IS220D never had an issue with white smoke, but my 2nd IS220d did suffer blue smoke intermittently from 147K all the way to 188K before I eventually sold it.

 

No one was ever able to sort it out, so I just lived with it.

 

Guess the valve stems were just worn out due to the high mileage and age of the car 2007 model.
