Steering Wheel Screeching When Key Put In Ignition.

Hi,

Niall here I am new to the site.

Loads of great information and tips so I guess I will be on it regularly.

I have a 2006 SC which only recently started to cause me problems. I have had the car for 4 years and not a single issue.

When I put the ignition key in, the steering wheel makes a screeching noise when moving into the memorised location. It tends to happen in the morning when the car has been unused for at least 10 hours.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Niall

Does it sound gritty, if so there might be a bit of debris in there, you can buy a can of air cleaner from staples (used on cleaning keyboards)but it works.

You could also try and get some silicon spray in there as well, but try the air first.

If the motor is the same as the LS430 there is a known problem with the ferrite magnetic core breaking up and jamming the motor, the noise may be the 1st sign of impending doom (sorry).

Some members have stripped down the steering column and turned the drive gear manually to set the wheel in the correct position then disconnected the motor, obviously this removes the feature but at around £200.00 plus fitting the motor isn't cheap.

John / Steve,

Many thanks for your prompt replies and the advice provided.

I am going to try the air cleaner first of all to see if that works and then move on from there.

I will update on my progress as it may benefit someone else in the future.

Best wishes

Niall

Hi

New to this forum.

My 2004 SC has what sounds like the same problem. Comes and goes.

I think it probably is a morning thing

Did the air cleaner do any good?

I was thinking of trying WD 40 but rather afraid I would do more harm than good. Not sure where to spray it.

Ps got several "minor" issues by will post individually

Dave
