Jumping Starting Someones Car Using The Hybrid Nx

Recommended Posts

As the title really .. is this safe ?

A friend in work suggested that theres a different procedure for jumping when the donor car is has Start/Stop, but what about Hybrid ?

My father-in-law's car had a flat batter over Xmas, so I volunteered to jump start him ......... popped the bonnet (for the first time since having the car) and quickly closed it again ...... even my father-in-law who's a bit of a DIY mechanic would'nt even have a go "just in case".

So .. can you jump start someones car with the hybrid NX ? If so - how ? Any special "rules" one has to follow ?

Hi, I come from the Toyota forums and have heard alot about this. There are many topics regarding the Hybrid Pruis and people doing this. I have heared horror stories and would say do not do this. Hybrids are not made to do jump starting and doing so apparantly 'frys the electrics' and does something to the Hybrid Battery which causes it to fail with all dahsboard lights comming on. You can check out the Toyota Owners club forum and you will find it in the Prius section.

Exactly what Ive heard. A Lexus service technician told me the same thing. This was posted in another section on this forum where I shared this information and it didnt go down too well - people saying its disconnected from the hybrid Battery etc.

I wouldn't do it. The 12v Battery on Toyota/Lexus hybrid cars is very small so doesn't really have enough capacity to jump a standard car.

You run the risk of spiking the car's internal systems. The hybrid Battery would be fine but the 12v systems, such as all the ECUs could be damaged. This is unlikely but just not worth the risk.
