Lexus Gs430 Gearbox Shunting And Not Smooth

Hi Guys,

Last saturday i bought a 2001 GS430 that just had a GS300 gearbox fitted as the previous box had a pump failure.

When changing gear its not very smooth and the car shunts a bit when changing gears. When its started in the morning sometimes it will jump out of reverse or forward when moving then stopping.

When flat footing it the gearbox is quite slow to kickdown as well.

I have checked the oil and it is at the correct level.

Is there anything I can look out for or do to resolve this? I am not sure what oil it has in the gearbox, does it HAVE to be the toyota iv or what ever its called? I know the garage that did the work and i dont think they would have had any of that instock, could that cause the problems im experiecing?

Any help would be great, this is the first auto car i have had and know nothing about auto boxes so i am quite out of my depth here so any help is greatly appreiciated!

Yes it really should be Toyota T-IV or a direct replacement / OEM fluid. Do you know what they used?

I'm not sure, i'm going to give the garage a call and ask them in the morning.

Thanks for all your replies Colin, really appreciate it.

Was the oil actually changed or just what was already in the second hand box used (and maybe topped up). What colour is the fluid. The kick down on my GS430 is pretty slow as well, I plan to do a complete refresh of fluid soon to see if that freshens the gearbox feel up a bit.
