Hi All,

I changed the old defunct Battery on my is220d (2007) last night, exchanging the standard 230 (L) x 170 (W) x 225 (H) for the biggest Battery I could fit, Varta G7 306 (L) x 173 (W) x 225 (H). All went swimmingly asides from the alarm speeding up the Battery change a bit ^^

After putting the new Battery in and resetting the windows. I then tried to put the Battery clamp back on, nothing doing.

Is it possible to make the Battery clamp a cm or 2 higher? Attempting to put on the clamp basically puts the clamp at a 70 degree angle, pushing down or moving the Battery around a bit doesn't seem to help.

Should the same clamp without any modifications be able to fit (note the new Battery is only 3mm wider) over the larger Battery?

Any help appreciated.

Have you got the hook shaped (bit like a threaded hockey stick) bolt located at the right place at the bulk head side?

If you have and it still does not work you could try and locate a slightly longer version maybe?

Try searching eBay for 'hook bolt', after you've measured your existing one. Think it is M8 thread....but do check.

PS....You'd be better off posting in the 220/250 section...this is the Mk1 is200/300 section.

I had the same problem on a LS400 as the Battery was slightly narrower and one side of the clamp didn't fit on top of the Battery, I used a small block of wood which filled the gap between the Battery and clamp (covered it in black insulation tape for cosmetic purposes).

Try using really heavy duty black cable ties instead of bars use cable ties it might work

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I didn't notice I posted in the wrong forum :/ should I move it?

- I have the Battery clamp with the hook shape on oneside. and the bolt exists near the bulkhead and hasn't moved since taking out the original.

I had another look last night (I live in the city so have an underground garage 10 minutes away) and noticed the Battery on the left side is sitting 1/2 cm off the bottom of the cradle, a bit of plastic the bar seats into (presumably to hold the smaller Battery in place) prevents the Battery from sitting flat - the bar the clamp fits on to (via the hook bit and then would be bolted on the bulkhead side) is then pushed out by the batteries edge hence the 70 degree angle.

I am going to take the Battery out again and let the alarm have fun and see if I can remove the plastic bit - hopefully possible if the purpose was to hold the smaller Battery in place

- Cable ties, I love cable ties but would rather fix/fit the Battery properly and use the original clamp - although, table ties would work to a certain degree

I'll let you know how I get on

Sounds like you have it sussed then.

Not sure why you should have any alarm issues?

I did my Battery on my 220d (when I had it) and did not get any alarm issues at all. I seem to recall the car was unlocked and my drivers door was slightly ajar during the work. I guess, if it goes off, just hit the 'open' button on your fob.

Hopefully so :)

The alarm issues were due to the previous Battery being so drained I couldn't disable the security before removing it, using the key to open the door - probably just that - when I plugged in a memory saver with a ppc 9v Battery, the alarm came to life but not enough power to disable the security...

Just an update, I sorted out the problem.

Took the Battery out again and investigated the housing, clamp, rods, there was a little bit of metal holding the rod where the clamp part with the hook connects to in place, the Battery was sitting on it, not sure if it was already like it or I bodged it by putting the Battery in too quickly, either way, bent it out of the way, removed the rod, checked it, put it back, replaced the Battery and voila, sorted.
