Is220D 2010 Head Gasket Failure Requires Engine Replacement - Help/adv

My Parents has recently purchashed an IS220D (not from approved used Lexus dealer), the car is a 2010 60' plate, it has done 89,000 miles, 9 services (6 of which were done at Lexus).

They noticed that the heating wasn't working, so called our local Lexus dealer to arrange for it to be diagnosed.

They diagnosed the car having head gasket failure, they would need to replace the engine with an exchange unit.

My parents were obviously upset at the prospect of spending that amount of
money and the staff offered to make representation to Lexus for any
goodwill contribution. The outcome was no -

They said the reason why was because the car had an 08' style engine fitted,
this engine was modified due to the 05' style which had all the issues
and needing their engines replacing.

They also mentioned that the car needed it's engine replaced due to its mileage.

They also said because the car had 3 of it's services done at a non Lexus dealer(6 were done at Lexus) it would be void on warranties etc.

After spending most of the day contacting Lexus by many different means we are no further on with having a useable car. The Customer Relations team at Lexus were disgraceful, showing no help what so ever with this disturbing matter!! We have spent many many years talking to many of people about how good a service you receive with Lexus, how could we be so wrong.

I am hoping to find out from other Lexus IS220d owners of same age and approx miles that have had head gasket failure can tell me the outcome with there car.

I personally own same model car but 2007 57' plate, which was fitted with 05 style engine and I would be able to get a new engine if my car had the same fault.... this just doesn't seem right considering my parents car is so much newer!!!

The Pursuit of Perfection.... Not the case with this car!!!!

Thanks in advanced!!

Hi M3G,

Sorry to hear about your parents issue with their vehicle, I have to agree that this is very disappointing news given the reputation of Lexus.

I myself own a 2010 model Is220d and believed that Lexus have made modifications to this model to prevent this known issue which I'm sure you are now aware that it's a manufacturer design fault after reading all the issues that owners have had with this engine. This engine is also used in various Toyota models too and their owners have had the same issues.

It's a great shame that Lexus are not willing to help given that your parents and others bought their Lexus based on the reputation of Lexus and it's reliability and obviously the modifications that Lexus have made to the engine in your parents case has not solved the issue!

I myself will never purchase a Toyota or Lexus in future, don't get me wrong not everyone has had issues with their is220d, but based on facts and what customers expect of Lexus it's a big disappointment!

I would suggest contacting trading standards and getting legal advice as to which way your parents move forward with this.

Good luck I hope there's some light at the end of the tunnel for your parents.

  • 9 months later...

Megan,

If the car was purchased from a Dealer, then the Sale of Goods Act implies a 6 month warranty (from date of purchase). The dealer is required by Law to take responsibility for all significant problems arising and which are assumed to have been present when the vehicle was sold.

Your complaint should be directed at the Dealer who sold the car, not Lexus.

Take immediate Professional advice and good luck.

Regards

john

Hi John, yes I did understand that , your advise was good And the right way to sort the issue, but I would think after 9 months from first posting about this problem Megan and her parents have probably sold both of their cars and gone to another car manufacturer.......the point I was trying to make is surely if Lexus did the modification to the engine then Lexus are liable for the failure... For a four year old engine to fail is a manufacturing fault ......I'm not a gambling man but I would lay money that this would not happen in the USA ? The customer would have had the engine replaced under warranty ....... It would interesting to know the final outcome of this post... As in many posts we will probably never know ?.....

Many thanks Allan.

Sadly I did not notice that Megan`s post was an old one;;;;;silly me! It really is so disappointing when people, for whatever reason, do not inform us of the outcome of their problems. Common courtesy demands that they should.

I agree with you re American Consumer rights being far superior to ours. I too love my Lexus and will do all that I can to ensure that it is both serviced and warranted until 140,000 miles.

Regards

John
