Brake Pad Change

Does anyone know if you need the caliper piston wind back tool to change the brake pads on my sc should I decide to do it myself.

I am looking for other posts but in the mean time if someone has the answer please.

It will be easier with a retraction tool, but can be done without. The SC front brakes are the same as the GS I believe, so some of the links in my signature block to tutorials I have done may help.

Thanks tiger fish for that. I will have a look at the tutorials. So the retraction tool I should get is the one that simply pushes the pistons back not the one that turns it back ie the pistons are threaded.

Yeah, just a push back tool. I've only ever found wind back pistons on calipers that are also the handbrake. Lexus tend to use a small drum in the rear discs for the handbrake, so no wind back on the rears either.

Just one bit of advice, when pushing the pistons back open the bleed nipple to prevent backflow of brake fluid through the master cylinder seals resulting in possible damage.

Never had any issue like that on any car I've owned or worked on. The service manual only mentions opening the bleed nipple if they are hard to push back.

Thanks all for your replies and Steve I agree it is always best to crack the bleed nipple to push the pistons back much easier but I didn't realise you could damage the master cylinder seal by not doing so. I have learned something again which is the excellent thing about these forums.

Thanks

  • 3 weeks later...

Update

Driving home last week and the rear pads started squealing so had to change them and as it turned out it was a pretty straight forward job and not too costly. I hope its not the fronts next as I think they will be more difficult but if there are any pictures posted anywhere I would be interested to know thanks.
