how is it even possible to tax and insure a car that is written off, am i missing something here, does the dvla not scrap and void the chassis number?

All that "written off" means is that the repairs were not economically viable for the insurance company (who will use all new parts and bring the car back to original spec) to carry out. In some cases, Cat D damage may not even affect the driveability of the car at all (imagine an older classic, where the interior leather got badly damaged - say a cabriolet that had left the roof open in a heavy rain shower, or somebody's dog chewing it), but the insurance company would still write it off.

Cat D is actually the lightest damage category, and both Cat C and Cat D cars can be put back on the road, taxed and insured (although any future seller must reveal that the car has been CatC/D). Only Cat A and Cat B cars cannot be returned to the road. Cat A won't have much left and can only be scrapped/recycled. Cat B must have their shells crushed (although even with Cat B's, any parts can still be sold).

I bought a Vauxhall Signum (cat c) 2.0 tdi as my daily drive to London, cat D is light cosmetic damage, no structural damage, my Signum needed a wing, head light, rad pack n bumper, they cat C'd the car which was a bit harsh, no chassis damage, cost me £200 to repair, I'm not a mechanic, but was an easy fix, cat C is on the log book, can't be removed, cat D isn't, but is logged on HPI report for cars, dates etc, I saw this ad a couple of months ago when I bought my F, but if a shell was required is would have been a cat C, so something not right about the ad, cat D has never put me off, but on an F I'd have to think twice, mainly due to the rarity of them.

Don't think its the same as the CAT D. It's too expensive for a private sale. And sounds like the owner knows nothing about them as they go on about 'extras' and they are standard! Worrying that they are selling right away. Aftermarket exhaust as well.

It's the same Cat D car - same registration, just looks like it has different exhaust tips. Not really cricket though by not telling potential buyers it's been up a tree in the past! at £15k it's way overpriced for a car that was deemed to have a bent chassis!
They've been busy in it too. Done another 13000 miles.
Nope!

Looks like a spontaneous eBay purchase in my opinion, now trying to sell it on after realising they've been sold a pup. I certainly wouldn't consider an ISF which has been in any kind of accident, must have been relatively major to become not economically viable to repair on a £20,000 motor.

Looking at reviews motorhub are terrible. I bet its one of them trying sell it privately where you don't have to declare its a cat d.
