Engine Codes..what Do They Mean?

I have seen various engine codes mentioned on this site but I have no idea what they mean.

Mine is a 1G FE engine whatever that means.

Could somebody please explain the codes and their meanings please?

Every fault on modern cars has a code assigned to it, which is stored in the ecu they can then be read with an obd tool. That then tells which part is at fault.
