3D Printed Iphone 5 Dock

Recommended Posts

I couldnt find anything good enough to fit an Iphone 5 dock into my car so i decided to design my own dock that would fit in the ashtray.

I used 123desidn to design the dock and sent the stl file to a company, who 3d printed my design and delivered it to me.

I used plastidip for the finish and a glue gun to secure the cable and dock into the ashtray.

I will not be selling these, but if anyone is interested i can give them the .stl file ( the 3d printing companies use this file to print the objects) and a guide on how i installed it.

I know you said that you used a glue gun to secure the cable. Could you explain that a little more. It seems like the actual cable could still wobble? How sturdy is the cable?

I designed it so that it is a near perfect fit for the cable. The glue holds it in place and there is no chance of it moving. I tacked it in place with superglue before using the glue gun to make sure the cable didn't move when applying the glue.

The dock only charges the phone. I use the belkin air to play my music through BT. You can see this in the pictures of my armrest.

Well done! Amazing work, you just gave me an idea what to 3D print next. I just get my rubber filaments at 3d2print.net and they look like this: http://www.3d2print.net/shop/filament/elastic-filament. They say this is a bit tricky filament to print with. Any issues you’ve encountered using such filament like this?

Not sure I'd use a rubber filament for this? I think a rigid material with a plastidip coating would be more effective.

I do have some ninjaflex which similar to the product you linked to. I haven't used it yet but documentation suggest it sticks well to Kapton tape and needs a slow travel speed to compensate for the compression between the extruder drive gear and the hot end.
