Recommended Posts

Managed to fit one of these.

http://eu.mio.com/en_gb/navman-spirit-v735-tv.htm Into a standard sat-nav housing. The result has tuned out better than i thought.

Well done Ian. For someone like me who still remembers valve radios, that's very impressive. Speaking of valve radios, just this week I was given a white Bakelite valve radio, and working!

Thanks for your comment Phil, Funny you should say that, my father came round today with an old bakelite valve radio in the horrible brown...still working £1 off car.boot.

Still had the fabric covered cable and round earth plug. He just scrounged the lead off my shed kettle...

Simply awesome Ian. A nice interface too, better than the current IS? lol really utilizes the OEM housing to its full potential. Not sure why more ppl dont do this who dont have navi, seems a easy and simple mod. but then again not everyones a nerd like me lol I would prob do it if i wasnt selling to be a bit more upto date, all you need is a cheap 7" gps (not cheap in your case) of eBay and a used navi housing then a bit of wiring and bodging into housing and jobs a goodn

That looks awesome.

I actually made a thread asking what's the newest satnav I could fit into a 2002 IS 200, and it seems this answers my question perfectly. http://www.lexusownersclub.co.uk/forum/topic/83477-newest-satnav-i-can-fit-in-a-lexus-2002-model-is-200/

Were you able to connect it to your main sound system?

What would you say are the pros/cons to your setup?

Thanks for reading my thread, The system uses the car speakers through a built in FM modulator, channel 6 on radio. Displays maps and plays music at same time, just cuts in with the next direction.

The good side of the set-up is how many functions it has, Only down side to it, there's no Bluetooth function and cant be used as a monitor for reversing camera ect.

Great piece of kit for the money, Has 7" screen and does more than any other sat nav.

Thanks for your quick reply. Even without Bluetooth, reversing camera I think that's a great setup for the price.

Just wondering where you bought the V735 from? As the link you posted is saying out of stock at moment, as is amazon.

Also, whats the sound quality like with the FM modulator-speaker set up?

I've only used an FM modulator once before, and it wasnt a great experience, a lot of background static and interference unfortunately.

Thanks again.

The sound is brilliant for a modulator! Very clear no hissing, whining at all.

The unit is 2 or 3 years old now,so wont be available new anymore unfortunately, but someone must have heard you..LOL

as if by magic, manufacturer re-furbished as well.

Wow, thanks a million for finding that link! I might actually buy that very unit. I think my dream of fitting a relatively new satnav in an oldish Lexus is about to come true :)

Just one final question - where would I be able to purchase a housing unit just like yours?

Thanks again, really appreciate your helpful replies.

There's a few on e-bay at the moment, £100 is about going rate for them unmodified.

one already modified with a tom tom

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LEXUS-IS200-SAT-NAV-/281150697036?pt=UK_In_Car_Technology&hash=item4175e32e4c

or standard and you would need to fit your own sat-nav into it.

if you go for second option make sure the screw cover is included.

So I'm thinking of taking the plunge and attempting a setup just like yours:

I'm considering buying: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mio-Spirit-V735-TV-Automotive-GPS-Receiver-/171100756466?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_GPSSystems_GPSSystems&hash=item27d66659f2

And: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lexus-is200-sat-nav-unit-fully-working-/121158158456?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c3596c878

In the second link it says, "THIS SALE IS FOR THE SAT NAV SCREEN/MONITOR ONLY"...I'm guessing 'screen/monitor' refers to the housing unit and not an actual old satnav system? (sorry I'm a bit of a newbie to all this). I've PM'd the seller, no reply as of yet, so just thought I'd ask here.

I've got a friend who can cut/modify dashboards, do the wiring etc. as long as I buy and give him the right products.

So basically if I buy the above two, they should be compatible for a setup like yours?

Thanks again...

That is all you need just the pop up screen unit.

As i said earlier if you go for that one, make sure the screw cover is included as they are near impossible to get separate.

The mio will fit as you have seen but the on-off slider needs modifying as well as its on top of the unit. If your fitter needs any pointers let me know mate.

Both the items you have are exactly what i used.

The seller just got back to me saying he doesn't have the screw cover =s

What exactly is a screw cover? Can I go ahead with this set up without one?

Thanks again
