Hi Martin, I had exactly the same experience and had to be rescued by the AA who diagnosed catastrophic Battery failure. This had never happened to me before. The AA started the car with a booster pack and followed me to a nearby garage where I bought a replacement Battery. Problem solved!

I had always thought that batteries always gave up the ghost GRADUALLY. As you can see, this is not always the case. I hope your problem is as simple as this.

On Monday I was sitting in the car for 90 mins listening to a CD and when I started the Battery struggled a bit. Just in case, I've got it booked in at Toyota today for a replacement. £87 inc VAT and fitting. I know others have got them for less but I don't think its bad for a genuine Battery.

Long time ago my Mk1 alternator was replaced at about £150 incl. labour I think ( reconditioned exchange, maybe 9 years ago now ! )

failure largely caused by the leaking pas pump .... a known fault ..... and it just " went " one night on the motorway, very frustrating !

I thought the PS pump on the series IV had been relocated from above the alternator so eliminating the leaking fluid problem?

If the alternator has failed it may be more cost effective to have yours rebuilt by a local specialist.

I've reconditioned my own on previous cars but you need a good soldering iron and a bit of know how.
