Deleted until it can for definitely be identified that it wont fit an LS 400. mine came from a 430 and it fits my MK4 400 OK.

Are we taking about the gear shift that looks like a T bar with a button on the side of it? Mike

no - that's the older ls400S - The Mark 3 and 4 have a similar looking knob - LS430s is similar but marginally smaller in size

The Mk3 I have come across have a completely different gear stick and knob to the Mk4. The ones on the Mk 4 are the same as you would find in the 430. I am sure someone will come along with a decisive answer. Mike
