Which Gas To Refil Air-con?

I wanted to know what gas I should get my air conditioning re-pressurised with. It used to be detailed in a posting on the www.lexusclub.co.uk site, but they closed down their forum! It's a was a big shame, I assume everyone has started using this discussion forum. :nuke:

Is there any point in asking Jimi if he will add a link to this site for those wishing to talk to other Soarer owners. In my opinion he lost the whole community feel when he got rid of the discussion forums. Oh well I'm sure his Auction page is making him more money now! :shifty:

the gas type is listed under the bonnet.. if i remember correctly it was directly under the bonnet too.

old type gas is now illegal.. so there is now a new substitute .

i think its pre92.. not 100% as i leave it to the experts.

you'll find a few around your area that are much cheaper than the dealer!

just to set the record straight , the r12 gas used in the ac system is not illegle ,it is not available from toyota dealers , as they are not allowed to handle it , however it can be obtained from air conditioning repairers and installers , my local one in gloucester charges £55.00 for a re charge ,or £35.00 if the system fails after being tested get it repaired then get a recharge of gas !

this for the correct gas for the old system

r12 is phased out and a replacement gas is now being used.

I had the original R12 gas a couple of years ago but apparently was too expensive to buy in and now they have the replacement gas which in fact expands more thaan the old gas I managed to get a refill for £40

When i mentioned illegal i propebably heard " we are not allowed to us this gas anymore"... cannot rmember as it was such a long time ago

R134A gas is what you want. R12 is now illegal and garages can be fined heavily for using it, so don't ask em! An additive is required to let trace R12 and the new R134 work together without corroding seals.

I recently paid for a conversion and top up, £90+vat. I'm told this is a reasonable price to pay.

Look for hella approved engineers, most garages have their own aircon people these days. You don't really need to search out aircon specialists anymore unless you need serious advice about your compressor i.e. refurbishing it etc.

The production of R12 was banned in 1993 and most manufactures started using the new R134a from 1994. The use of exsting stock of R12 was banned from 2001. R12 and R134a do not mix and the only correct way to recharge a R12 system is to have it converted to R134a, there are some so called drop in replacements about but you need to be careful as some are inflammable.
