I'm having the cam belt changed on the 430 which is now 10 years old but has only done 40,000 miles. I have seen reference to having the water pump changed at the same time in this forum as a matter if course. When I asked the main dealer about this (Lexus Cheltenham) they said that they would only change it if it shows signs of leaking. He said the pumps do not often go but do sometimes leak. What is the general opinion should I change it anyway?

I would for peace of mind , my mate had a belt changed on his mark 2 & 3 weeks later the pump went killing the belt, fortunately for him the mark 2 is a non contact engine. He then changed the belt & pump himself.

I changed the water pump at cam belt change time and was glad I did as it was showing signs of being about to leak (122,000 miles)

Pete

It is a few mins more labour if you change the pump at the same time as the belt - if you have to do the pump on its own it is the same labor plus 10 mins as the belt so it is smart to do the pump and the belt at the same time.
